Annual Report 2 0 1 ANNUAL REPORT 2 0 1 toe c s n 4 A message from the Executive Director, C-SCDC, Inc. The future looks bright for the River Valley Regional Food Bank. We will move into a larger facility with four times the room. We will have more freezer space, more fresh produce and more perishable foods. With some renovations, we will have a climate controlled sorting room with more volunteer opportunities. All of this together shows we are stepping up our war on hunger! Mark Whitmer A message from the Director, RVRFB As we enter our 29th year, I'm amazed at what we are able to accomplish together. Since 1986, we have distributed over 64 million pounds of food and related products to the River Valley. But more than food, we provide hope. Hope delivered through a network of volunteers, partner agencies and caring donors who work every day to ensure no one goes hungry. Thank you so much for your generous support. Together, we stand ready to feed a healther future. Ted Clemons The mission of the River Valley Regional Food Bank To solicit, store and distribute food and related products through a network of private, not-for-profit organizations. To provide service programming that feed and assist those in the River Valley in need. To raise public awareness about hunger and food banking's role in alleviating hunger. Background Recognizing a critical need, the food bank was started in 1986 with the help of a grant from the United Way of Fort Smith Area. It was founded with a determination and will to assure local citizens have dependable access to nutritious food. In becoming a member of the Feeding America network, the food bank grew to serve Crawford, Franklin, Johnson, Logan, Polk, Scott, Sebastian and Yell Counties. Over the years, the number of hunger-relief member agencies distributing food in this area has grown from the founding seven to just over 190! Impact In 2014, the food bank distributed 7.4 million pounds of products assisting near 50,000 people. This distributed food has an estimated wholesale value of over $13 million and economically boosts our region by over $23 million. Arkansas remains ranked as a top 10 food insecurity state. A chronic need exists to get nutrition to our children, the elderly and disabled. For every ten people we help, five are either children or over-50 adults. Seven out of ten of those we help rely on disability or social security. More than half the working families we serve have at least one wage earner working one or more jobs. Need Feeding America tells us that the missing meal gap is growing! Over 9.7 million meals are missing from the diets of those living in West Central Arkansas. Food insecurity affects over 55,000 people, a staggering 18% of the regional population Arkansas. Food insecurity impacts children and elderly hardest. With 23,200 children unsure of their next meal, that makes 30% of all local children needing help. Public schools provide meals to 70% of the students - perhaps the most nutrious meal they will eat. The threat of hunger affects 40% of our elderly with 1-in-4 adopting coping strategies to get by. He Bob Ketchum’s multimedia bio was speaking with Entertainment Fort Smith on the eve of a shared birthday: Ketchum turned 65 and his son Robert W. Ketchum III was 14. brings back ’70s Rock memories Ketchum's marriage to his wife, Jane; the birth of their son, a close relationship with his older by Lynn Wasson daughter, Missy, and his grandchildren are the joy he calls “a gift of a second chance at life.” Face the Music includes Ketchum's career after his Fort Smith radio years, establishing an audio/video recording business near Mountain Home in the house his parents built at Lake Norfolk. His personal life and career have been a bumpy but enthusiastic ride, pitting his unflagging passion for music with the tough realities of “the music business.” Local music fans will recognize bands and artists Paperkid, Joe Hamilton, Judge Parker, the Cate Brothers and many more who were recorded by Ketchum. Cedar Crest Studio also recorded pre-production tracks for the Swedish metal band Krokus. The book's highlight for Fort Smith readers, however, will be Ketchum's retelling of memories they share with him. Besides “Album Review,” radio listeners from 1969-75 may remember the station's truck with a Plexiglas window revealing Ketchum inside spinning 45s at live remote events and “battles of bands.” Ketchum at the board at KWHN/KMAG, which broadcast his show “Album Review.” “The vehicle was a converted bread truck, an Inset: Whizz performs at a KISR Frisbee Festival in 1974.
