He served two years as an officer in the U.S. Army, V Corps Headquarters, in Frankfurt, Germany, from 1968 to 1970. On return, attended Hastings Law School in San Francisco where he met his wife, Mary. He started his broadcasting career in 1974 with play-by-play of the Tacoma Twins AAA baseball team and also for the University of Puget Sound’s football and basketball teams. Jerry moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1976 and did the radio play-by-play for the Salt Lake Gulls AAA baseball team for three years. He then switched to basketball and was the Assistant General Manager and radio broadcaster for the Utah Pros in the Western Basketball Association and later the Group Sales Director for the NBA’s Utah Jazz prior to joining KWMS Radio in 1980. In 1981 Jerry moved to Toronto to become one of the Blue Jays radio broadcasters with Tom Cheek. For the next 23 years, "Tom and Jerry" would be the radio voices of the Blue Jays. Their partnership covered the rise of the Blue Jays through the 1980s, culminating with back to back World Series Championships in 1992 and 1993. This is his 36th season as a member of the Blue Jays radio team. In 2012 he was named the winner of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s 2012 Jack Graney Award. Jerry was the long-time Basketball Coach at Etobicoke Collegiate High School, retiring from coaching there after 20 years and 25 in total at the end of the 2015 season. He and his wife Mary have two grown sons, Ben and Joe, and reside in Toronto all year round. Musical Entertainment Vocalist - Michael Vanhevel Michael Vanhevel is a rising “Crooner” from Grand Bend, Ontario. He has performed for audiences all over Canada in various theatre and concert venues in such cities as Halifax, London, Cambridge, Niagara, Stratford, and Sudbury. He has played to sold out houses at the Stratford Festival, and his concerts; in which he often performs with his trademark “Crooner” style, are always met with great reception. He has this past year travelled across Ontario with the hit musical Million Dollar Quartet, wherein he played the undisputed King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley at venues in Thunder Bay, the Kingston area and Sudbury. He has also appeared at several of the previous ESS Gala events and he is overjoyed to be here once again, performing some of his favourite music for you. Pianist - Stu Harrison Stu was born and raised in South-Western Ontario, beginning piano instruction at the age of 3. Completing his early studies through the Suzuki Method in London ON, and then studying with Harold Riddolls (RCM), he attained his ARCT by 16. Following several years of competitive classical performance, he branched out into a wide variety of musical settings, from choir direction to church organist, and finally to jazz. He attended the University of Toronto’s Jazz Performance program, graduating with Honours in 2003. In 2003 he started Stu Harrison Music, a commercial and wedding music company that worked extensively throughout Ontario from 2003 – 2007, supplying music to a wide variety of high-profile clientele. During the same period, he was also Music Director and Composer for Garden Brothers Circus, performing more than 1000 shows to well over 2 million people. In 2006 he joined Merriam Music, the largest private music school in Canada as well as its highest volume piano dealer, and took on a variety of roles, including teaching, retailing, curriculum development, marketing, and eventually to the executive level where he serves as head of Sales, Marketing, and Strategic Development. In October 2016, Stu released his debut album “Volume 1” (One Nightstand Records), to critical acclaim, featuring Canadian legends Terry Clarke, and Neil Swainson. Stu continues to perform, accompany, MD, and arrange regularly throughout Canada.
