2 days, 6 challenges, 36 students and 42 teams later, we were so happy to have been part of the Secondary School Enterprise Masterclasses in conjunction with Global Entrepreneurship Week 2018. Running from Monday 12th to Sunday 18th November, the Entrepreneurship Network has been designed with an aim to make it easier for anyone, anywhere to start and scale a business. As our students continuously develop vital skill sets such as leadership, creative thinking, team work, strategic planning and communication, the Enterprise Masterclasses were the perfect team- building events.

Hosted at Craven Park, home of Hull Kingston Rovers, schools from around the area competed in a series of challenges that put their entrepreneurial skills to the test. Throughout each day our students heard from a number of inspiring entrepreneurs, competed in ice breaker challenges, quizzes, video pitches and planned their own event to be held at Craven Park. We were very pleased to announce that on day one, the ENLUTC team won the ice breaker challenge, whilst on day two we were one of the six teams shortlisted to present our ideas to a team of judges!

Congratulations to all teams involved throughout both days. Light Up a Life Event Macmillan 20th Anniversary Badge

This December marked Macmillan Trusts, Light up a Life Event 20th anniversary, and to help honour the special occasion three of our year 11 students got involved to design and produce a limited edition badge to raise money. Manda, Oakley and Brandon, worked together on the special project to design a concept that represented both the remembrance tree and lights that are used each year to remember loved ones. The badges were on sale throughout the night for a charitable suggested donation of £1.00.

Hosted by the Macmillan Fundraising Committee, in partnership with The Foundry Shopping Centre and The Scunthorpe Telegraph, the poignant service, held on Wednesday 14th November gave people the opportunity to remember those they love but have sadly lost. The incredible event raises money each year to help and support those living with cancer in our local community, and this year was able to have raised in excess of £7k! We are incredibly proud to have been part of such an inclusive ceremony which supports local people. Spanish

Working alongside of our Spanish teacher this term, we are very lucky to welcome Federica Lisa from our industry partner British Steel, who is helping to support our GCSE Spanish students. Frederica, is a technical graduate and a master of chemistry, currently working on the development of steelmaking at British Steel. Fluent in Italian, Spanish and English, she is a great addition for our students who she will now be working alongside of on a weekly, one-to-one basis to help prepare for their speaking exams.

It is a great opportunity for us to have Frederica supporting our students and they are already benefitting, without a doubt, from her mentoring. ¡Muchas gracias Federica! BBC Radio Humberside Visit

After our brief brush with fame back in October, appearing on BBC Radio Humberside for an interview with broadcaster Phil White, we were lucky enough to be able to spend an afternoon at the production studios in Hull to take a look behind the scenes.

Touring both the television and radio studios, we were given a unique insight into the planning and production of some of our favourite channels from around the region. The level of industry knowledge, and technological skills required to broadcast live each day certainly inspired us all. The ENLUTC Company Consistencies

The one-to-one sessions are designed to equip our year 10 students with extensive industry knowledge, guidance and advice that will benefit them when looking towards their future career options.

Two mentoring sessions were held throughout November, the first on Thursday 1st and an additional session on Thursday 29th. Our students were lucky to work alongside of companies such as ABP Humber, British Steel, Pepperell’s Solicitors, STEM Learning, RAF Scampton, Cristal, Phillips 66, Singleton Birch, Barclays Bank Scunthorpe, Jobcentre Plus and The Marketplace Ltd.!

Working alongside of company experts allows our students to build confidence, communication, engagement and industry knowledge; all vital skills that can be taken throughout both their professional and personal life. We are looking forward to further mentoring sessions throughout the academic year. Cristal Site Visit

What is one of the many things we love about our industry partners? Being able to visit their world class sites and speak with industry experts of course!

On Wednesday 5th December ten of our year 13 students visited Cristal, who gave them the invaluable experience of being on a top tier COMAH site, along with a spot of table tennis. Enrichment Crumble Sessions

Throughout our second half term we were joined by UK STEM, who delivered weekly sessions to our year 10 students on Crumble controllers. The small circuit boards equipped with sparkles, allowed students to apply computing and coding knowledge to programme light sequences that lit up their faces – figuratively and literally! Humberside Airport Visit

On Tuesday 4th December, Humberside Airport invited a group of our year 12 students to spend a morning at their facilities. Introducing them to the airports history, air traffic control and radar tower, it gave our students the opportunity to spend time learning from the experts who are responsible for the separation and efficient movement of approaching and departing aircrafts and vehicles operating on the taxiways and runways of the airport itself.

We also had the chance to experience a few practical exercises from the Humberside Fire & Rescue Service! Jacobs Civil Engineering Visit

On Thursday 22nd November, our Year 12 and 13 students welcomed visitor Chiko, from industry partner Jacobs to discuss his job role as a Civil Engineer. Delivering a presentation on this specific engineering discipline and others associated with the sector, Chiko was able to provide our students with a unique insight into industry.

Talking about how Civil Engineering deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, in his case helping to reduce the risk of surface water flooding from watercourses, it is just another way that we help our students to understand the various opportunities available after education. RAF National Engineering Competition

On Saturday 22nd September, we were delighted to announce that three of our year 10 students; James, Joe and Liam, cadets of the 119 Scunthorpe Squadron, came 3rd in the RAF National Engineering Competition! Out of the 26 finalists the cadets from the 199 squadron, helped to lead their team to victory by undertaking a dragons den style pitch in front of a myriad of judges and RAF chiefs. Their presentation showcased an impressive design and prototype for a new age UAV system for ground intelligence and reconnaissance missions, that was worthy of 3rd place.

For their prize, the STEM team were awarded a once in a lifetime, red letter day experience at the MBDA Systems in Stevenage on Friday 2nd November. Well done to everybody involved! Boxford Laser Cutting Machine

At the Engineering UTC Northern Lincolnshire we are proud to provide our students with an innovative concept of education that combines technical, practical and academic learning to ensure that they can transfer their skills straight into the workplace. As part of this, they always have access to clean digital technology and industry-standard machinery to further develop their skills and knowledge.

The latest piece of machinery to join our extensive workshops is our new Boxford BML1390 Laser Cutting Machine, a versatile machine that can not only cut steel and stainless steel but also has the advantage of being able to process a wide variety of non-metallic materials. Christmas Lights Switch On

We love when our students voice their ideas and are actively involved in schools events, so on Saturday 24th November under the careful guidance and planning of year 12 student Josh, we opened up our British Steel Workshop as part of the Christmas Lights Switch On.

Joined by a number of year 10 volunteers we offered hot drinks and festive music, as well as showcasing just one area of our world class facilities to provide a further insight into the life at ENL UTC. Working alongside of Council, 20/21 Visual Arts Centre, The Foundry Shopping Centre and North Lincolnshire Police, we ensured that Scunthorpe celebrated the start of the Christmas period in style.

Christmas Jumper Day

On Friday 14th December, both students and staff members donned their best woolly wonders for Christmas Jumper Day. Not only did the day involve a variety of bright, funny and crazy jumpers but it also helped us to raise a total of £78.00 for Save the Children. Who knew that Rudolph was a Sunderland supporter!?
