TIPOFF * Southland Conference Game >> The New Orleans women’s basketball program will look to turn the page after a week off from competition (no games scheduled/not COVID related). The Privateers fell 72-55 to Jacksonville State in their last game back on Dec. 5, 2020 at the Pete Mathews Coliseum in Jacksonville, Ala. DIONJHAE THMOAS led the team in scoring (15 points) for the second straight contest. Three student-athletes reached double-digit scoring in total.

>> The New Orleans and Missouri programs have not met very often throughout each school’s history as this will be just the fourth meeting between the two schools. The Privateers took the first ever meeting between the two sides by a 91-86 margin back on Jan. 1, 1988. The squads have gone on to play just two more times in the last 32 years, both Missouri victories (53-52 win on Dec. 14, 1988 and 81-45 victory back on Dec. 2, 2017). It is the first time in three years that the two sides are linking up once again. COVERAGE INFORMATION TELEVISION SEC NETWORK + >> New Orleans is coming off one of the best seasons in program history. The Privateers advanced to the Southland Play-by-Play Nate Gatter Postseason Tournament for the fourth straight year and posted the program’s highest win total since 1992-93. Included in that mark were 12 Southland victories, the most conference wins for the program in a single-season Color Brad Loos in school history. RADIO Mizzou Network >> The Privateers return just five of their 13 letterwinners from a year ago, but each returner DIONJHAE( THOMAS, Play-by-Play - JADA DUNCANTELL, MIA DECK, MARY DELGADO and TRAYA BRUCE) has handled starter minutes during their career. The team also reloaded with one of the most talented and deepest recruiting classes in program history with the addition of 11 newcomers that included three transfers (TIANA GIPSON, ERIN RANDLE and ABIGAIL STREAMING SEC NETWORK + JOHNSON) and eight freshmen (CALEIGH-ROSE WEST, ERICCA RICHARDSON, KYLA DAVIS, ZOE COOPER, Play-by-Play Nate Gatter BRIANNA ELLIS, AALIA CARLSON, ZANAA CORDIS and JACQUELINE DIANIS). Color Brad Loos

The New Orleans women’s basketball program was selected to finish seventh overall in the 2020-21 Southland >> LIVE STATS UNOPrivateers.com Preseason Poll. Last year the Privateers were picked eighth and went on to have one of the best seasons in program history. TWITTER @PrivateersWBB

Women’s Hoops Outrebound No. 19/16 Tigers in Loss

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of New Orleans (1-6) held a strong edge on the offensive glass but could not convert on second chance opportunities early in an 81-45 loss to No. 19/16 University of Mis- souri (7-1) Saturday at Mizzou Arena.

The Privateers opened the scoring on a basket by Shania Woods but Missouri answered on the next possession with a three from Lauren Aldridge. That sparked a 13-0 run by the Tigers. After a quarter, Missouri held a 24-6 lead.

Mariah Wright knocked down a pair of triples at the outset of the second quarter and had four in the contest. The Tigers held a 43-19 lead into the halftime break. Missouri shot 51.6% from the field in the first half and 52.7% for the afternoon. It was their fourth time eclipsing the 50% mark in a game this season.

The Privateers dominated the glass with a 25-7 advantage in offensive rebounds and a 45-36 total edge for the game. Whitley Larry led the way in rebounds for New Or- leans with seven. Randi Brown and Kayla Mundy added five each.

“It’s a plus,” said head coach Keeshawn Davenport about the rebounding advan- tage. “That’s a heck of a bright spot. Mis- souri is a very good team and they have extremely good talent. I think we have to do something about capitalizing on the extra possessions we have. And we have to get off to better starts.”

The loss was the second against a ranked opponent for the Privateers. And it was the second of a three-game stretch in six days.

Wright led the team in scoring with 12 points, all on three-pointers. Brown added nine points and Shania Woods finished with eight. Alyssa Quixley had seven points to lead all scorers off the bench. Brown also had a team-high four assists.

“I think Mariah did a great job of knocking down open shots when she had them,” said Davenport. “That’s something that everybody has to continue to do is shoot the ball with confidence.”
