This famous piece is based upon the legend of William Tell and has been used in cartoons, movies, and even commercials! THE LEGEND OF WILLIAM TELL William Tell is a Swiss folk hero. As the legend goes, William Tell was known as a mighty man who was an expert with the crossbow. After refusing to pay homage to the Austrian emperor, Tell was arrested and the emperor deemed that William and his son Walter be executed. However, the emperor would let them go free if William was able to shoot an apple off the head of his son! Walter nervously stood against a tree and an apple was placed upon his head. William successfully shot the apple from 50 steps away in front of a crowd of onlookers! William Tell and his never ending fight for liberty helped start the rebellion against the emperor and other tyrants as well. CRAIG PRIEBE – ADVISER BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA JULY 2010 | 1 On September 19, 1857, Giuseppe Verdi wrote to the impresario at San Carlo that he was “in despair.” He was commissioned to write an opera for the 1858 carnival season but could not find what he deemed a suitable libretto. For many years he desired to compose an opera based on Shakespeare‟s King Lear but he deemed the singers in Naples to be inadequate for the task. Nevertheless, he writes in the same letter that he is now “…condensing a French drama, Gustave III di Svezia, libretto by Scribe, given at the [Paris Grand Opéra with music by Auber] about twenty years ago [1833]. It is grand and vast; it is beautiful; but this too has the conventional forms of all works for music, something which I have never liked and I now find unbearable. I repeat, I am in despair, because it is too late to find other subjects.”1 Despite finding it “unbearable” Verdi continued to work on Gustave, calling on the talents of Antonia Somma to write the libretto. However, Verdi did not foresee the intense scrutiny that would be leveled against it. Upon receiving word from Vincenzo Torelli (the impresario of the San Carlo Opera House), that nothing less than a new production would suffice to fulfill his contract, Verdi and Somma set to work immediately on Gustave.

El compositor en cuestión gozó de la gloria operística y fue el segundo director en la historia del Conservatorio de París. Su Hmusa es ligera e irresistible, si bien una de sus grandes creaciones es una obra dramática. Durante la década de 1820 París se convirtió en el centro del mundo musical gracias en gran medida a tres casas de ópera emblemáticas; La Opéra de Paris, la Opéra Comique y el Thêatre Italien. Daniel Auber, quien había estudiado con Luigi Cherubini, se convirtió en el gran señor de la ópera cómica y habría de ser modelo para compositores como Adolphe Adam, Francois Bazin y Victor Masse, entre otros. Dotado desde pequeño para la música, Auber había aprendido a tocar violín y el piano pero fue hasta 1811 en que perfeccionó sus estudios musicales y se dedicó de tiempo completo a la composición. Entre sus mejores obras dentro del campo de la ópera cómica se encuentran joyas como Fra Diavolo y Le domino noir; sin embargo, hay una obra más para completar un trío de obras maestras que, junto con las grandes óperas La muette de Portici, Haydée y Gustave III, conforman lo mejor de su producción. I due omaggi alla memoria di Bellini aggiunti alla fine della rassegna, espressione di due differenti correnti critiche, sono stati scelti tra i vari articoli pubblicati a Londra alla notizia della morte del compositore; essi riassumono i primi sei anni di presenza belliniana sulle scene inglesi e illustrano la controversa recezione critica dell’opera italiana a Londra.     ROMEO AND JULIET TRAGEDY NEVER SOUNDED SO BEAUTIFUL 15 + 16 MAR 2019 CONCERT HALL, QPAC WELCOME Welcome to Romeo and Juliet! We are thrilled you could join us. These concerts are particularly special to me because Romeo and Juliet was one of the first pieces I played with the Berlin Philharmonic. In Queensland Symphony Orchestra we regularly perform this work with the ballet. It’s some of the most beautiful music in the ballet repertoire and this time we’re really excited to be centre stage and make the music the focal point. Prokofiev is a master artist and paints glorious musical pictures. It’s a lot of fun for the bass section – we really enjoy a good sword fight and will put on a show for you! I think you’ll certainly recognise the Montagues and Capulets movement. These concerts also showcase virtuoso harpist Marie-Pierre Langlamet, who I’ve had the pleasure of performing with in Berlin many times. She’s an inspiring musician and a really unique performer. I’m sure you’ll marvel at her incredible artistic ability performing Ginastera’s blistering Harp Concerto. It’s a huge honour for us to share the stage with a musical icon like her. It is always a pleasure to perform on the QPAC stage for our beloved Brisbane audience. He was only twenty-four years old at the time. Based on Charles Perrault’s CENDRILLON of 1697, La Cenerentola follows a common girl who dreams of a happier life and a prince who seeks to marry the most beautiful girl he can find. Rossini’s plot diverges from the fairy-tale tradition and takes a more realistic approach, with an endearing and sensible central character. Director John Hoomes brings some of the magic spirit back by setting the farcical tale by the sea in his BEACH BLANKET BINGO -inspired staging. The libretto, by one T. J. Thackeray, was even more closely connected with Taglioni than Barnett was with Meyerbeer, because it versified the plot of La sylphide (1832), the scenario of which tenor Adolphe Nourrit, the first Robert, had devised especially for his balletic costar. Although in his New Grove article on Barnett, Nicholas Temperley remarks that Thackeray’s libretto derived “from German folklore,” this is only partly true.1 Nourrit had loosely based La sylphide on a story by Charles Nodier, Trilby, ou Le lutin d’Argail (a Franco-Celtic enter- prise, therefore), swapping the genders of the protagonists (a goblin and a fisherman’s wife in Nodier; a sprite and a farmer in the ballet). More impor- tant, Nourrit reconceived the supernatural figure in terms derived from the Swiss physician Paracelsus and drew on the latter’s secondary mythology of the sylph (which probably portmanteaus “nymph” with “sylvestris”) instead of the primary figures of fairies or nymphs.
