  • Elektra's Mandate Is to Inspire and Lead in the Choral Art Form Through
Elektra’s mandate is to inspire and lead in the choral art form through excellence in performance and the creation, exploration, and celebration of women’s repertoire. I Am in Need of Music Listener's Guide by Morna Edmundson, Artistic Director Saturday, May 4, 2019 Shaughnessy Heights United Church, Vancouver Elektra Women’s Choir Morna Edmundson, Artistic Director Stephen Smith, piano with special guest, Suzie LeBlanc, soprano and with David Greenberg, violin Welcome! This “Listener’s Guide” is meant to give you insight into Elektra’s season programming and to make the concert experience richer and more meaningful. I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the music we’re singing on May 4, 2019 in Vancouver and May 5 at ArtSpring on Salt Spring Island. Here you’ll also find poems and translations. My days are spent either making music or planning for it to be made, and sometimes I forget because I am so close to it what a privilege it is to be surrounded by the beauty of voices, notes, and words on a daily basis. Our May program celebrates the ineffable mystery of music both with brand new pieces and also arrangements of songs that may connect you to past experiences. It is a treat to welcome our special guest, Canadian soprano Suzie LeBlanc, CM. This is our first-ever collaboration with her, although she and I have known each other for a long time. The concert weaves together many of her passions - baroque music, Acadian music, and the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop. It stand to be a rare insight into a consummate performer who was recently made a member of the Order of Canada for "contributing to the development of early-period music and Acadian culture as a singer and teacher".

  • Joni Mitchell," 1966-74
"All Pink and Clean and Full of Wonder?" Gendering "Joni Mitchell," 1966-74 Stuart Henderson Just before our love got lost you said: "I am as constant as a northern star." And I said: "Constantly in the darkness - Where 5 that at? Ifyou want me I'll be in the bar. " - "A Case of You," 1971 Joni Mitchell has always been difficult to categorize. A folksinger, a poet, a wife, a Canadian, a mother, a party girl, a rock star, a hermit, a jazz singer, a hippie, a painter: any or all of these descriptions could apply at any given time. Moreover, her musicianship, at once reminiscent of jazz, folk, blues, rock 'n' roll, even torch songs, has never lent itself to easy categorization. Through each successive stage of her career, her songwriting has grown ever more sincere and ever less predictable; she has, at every turn, re-figured her public persona, belied expectations, confounded those fans and critics who thought they knew who she was. And it has always been precisely here, between observers' expec- tations and her performance, that we find contested terrain. At stake in the late 1960s and early 1970s was the central concern for both the artist and her audience that "Joni Mitchell" was a stable identity which could be categorized, recognized, and understood. What came across as insta- bility to her fans and observers was born of Mitchell's view that the honest reflection of growth and transformation is the basic necessity of artistic expres- sion. As she explained in 1979: You have two options.

She is a popular music superstar, and has been since the early 1970s. Surprisingly, considering Mitchell’s Jstatus in the music world, she has often said that for her, painting is primary, music and writing secondary. Regarding Mingus, her 1979 jazz album, she commented that with it she “was trying to become the Jackson Pollock of music.” In a 1998 interview Mitchell reflected, “I think of myself as a painter who writes music.”1 In our era, when many critics and philosophers view interarts relationships with suspicion, it is remarkable that Mitchell persists so vigorously in creating work that involves multiple arts. To consider Mitchell’s art as the productions of a multi-talented person does not get us far with the works themselves, since this approach immediately invokes the abstractions and speculations of psychology. On the other hand, postmodernism has taught us that there is no absolute, tran- scendent meaning available as content for various forms. In the face of such strong objections to coalescing arts, Mitchell insists through her works that her art is intrinsically multidisciplinary and needs to be understood as such. Interarts relationships have been studied at least since Aristotle decreed that the lexis, the words, takes precedence over the opsis, the spectacle, of drama. Although recognized as being distinct, the arts have also commonly been discussed as though they are analogous.

A Conversation with Nazareth's Dan McCafferty Mike Ragogna : Dan, let's talk about all things Nazareth and Rock 'N' Roll Telephone , your twenty-fourth album, right? That's a great achievement. How did you get here? Dan McCafferty : I think we're just a band that grew up and started to write our own songs and stuff. Coming from Scotland at that time, there were really only four or five big gigs that people used to come and visit. It's not like that now, of course. We started like any other band, doing Chuck Berry covers and Little Richard covers and on through the early eighties and then you start to write your own stuff. We played every place, eventually got signed and made records. It was a gradual buildup, but we always worked. Up until I got sick, we were doing two hundred, two sixty gigs a year. It was that work ethic thing, "It's got to be a proper job." Plus, you enjoy it so much! It just kind of flew by, Mike, I hope to tell you, but it was very interesting along the way. MR : Dan, how did you guys develop your sound? DM : I guess just paying attention to what was going on and what we really liked. I found out at a very early age that I preferred people like Little Richard to Cliff Richard, that kind of thing. Pop music was okay, it was better than listening to your dad's music, but it didn't have enough balls. As the years go on you develop, and when I discovered American music, Little Richard and Chuck Berry and then later in life people like Bob Seger and all the Detroit bands, it was just like, "Whoa, what's going on here?" Because at home, we had The Shadows and people like Billy Fury who were all kind of pseudo-American imitations of Elvis and stuff, where you guys were producing stuff that was frightening to us at the time and we wanted to go there.

“The Times They Are A-Changin’”: Flexible Meter and Text Expression in 1960s and 70s Singer-Songwriter Music by Nancy Elizabeth Murphy B.Mus., The University of Western Ontario, 2003 M.A., The University of Western Ontario, 2007 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Music) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) December 2015 © Nancy Elizabeth Murphy, 2015 Abstract The 1960s and 70s saw the flowering of the singer-songwriter style, which featured acoustic performances by artists who were the composers and lyricists of their own music. Reflecting their culture, their songs carried messages of personal and political significance. But their music is of technical as well as of social interest. Like classical art song, it often highlights lyrical meaning with various sorts of metric irregularities. In this dissertation, I closely analyze twenty-seven songs by Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Joni Mitchell, and Cat Stevens, in order to characterize the metric style of their songwriting and demonstrate their use of meter as an expressive device. To describe meter in this music requires theories more flexible than those usually applied to groove-based music. The analyses in this dissertation draw not only from theories of meter as a hierarchy of beat streams, but also upon theories of metrical process and prosody, in order to create transcriptions, to describe precisely listeners' sensations of meter, and to propose expressive rationales for metric settings. As an introduction to the style and the theoretical issues, Chapter 1 considers the problems of conceiving of meter in the expressively timed context of Mitchell’s “The Fiddle and the Drum.” Chapter 2 examines the existing methods for analyzing meter in music and poetry, in order to find some productive ways to analyze this metrically fluctuant repertoire.
