Be on the lookout for strange cars or people. • Walk in well-lit busy streets and in a group, if possible. • Make sure your home is secure, and become a member of an armed response service. Be sure that you know all the emergency numbers or have them displayed in an accessible area. • Always let someone know where you are going and how long you will be gone. But think twice before advertising your impending absence on social media. Criminals also have access to Facebook and Twitter. The source since 1870 Stop the violence!

Violence in schools and at universities has become so ex- treme and spread so rapidly that the Basic and Higher Edu- cation ministries have raised the alarm at the highest level – n cabinet. This followed reports of violent incidents that included the deaths of students at University of Zululand and Univer- sity of KwaZulu-Natal last weekend. There was also the bi- zarre and tragic event at a school in the North West, where a 17-year old pupil stabbed a 24-year old teacher to death be- cause the teacher had apparently refused to give the young- ster seconds at the canteen, the previous day. His granny told the media that her grandson often went to school hun- gry and the schools were often his only source of food. “I call on vice-chancellors to prioritise their institutional protocols on student safety and I intend to meet with them as soon as possible to develop a sector approach to confront this scourge,” Pandor said as she announced plans for an urgent meeting with the Council for Higher Education in South Africa (CHE). Like many before (and perhaps after her), the minister blamed alcohol and substance abuse as well as inadequate security at university campuses around South Africa. However, Ms Pandor’s clarion call misses the point, for only a total ban on alcohol on campuses, as well as one-to- one ratio of security guards to students can keep everyone safe from this incessant violence. Indeed, it seems like as a nation, South Africa has refused to acknowledge how much violence exists in this country. According to the recently re- leased Police Crime report, 57 people were murdered every day between April 2017 and April 2018. That is 20,336 mur- ders in absolute numbers, or 35.8 murders per 100 000. This is one of the highest crime rates in the whole world. There is a normalisation of violence in South Africa, that Needlecrafters Gerty Klazinga, Val Searle, Jessie Pillet and Ros Parker share a joke at the Brookshaw Fete on Spring Day 2018. is mind-boggling, when violence is seen as a necessary and Photo: Sue Maclennan justified means of resolving conflict.
