At The Cross 12 till 12.45 ‘straight from the shore to your door’ CANdo July/August 2019 Editorial The other day I came across an interesting statistic, which you may have read in the local and national press. Apparently, Coupar Angus is one of the healthiest of places to live in the UK. It came eighth in a list of the top ten. You may view this with some scepticism - why not in the top three? Or with surprise that our town is mentioned at all. Further investigation revealed how the list was compiled. It comes from Liverpool University and the Consumer Data Research Centre. This body selected various criteria and applied them to towns and villages across the country. These criteria included access to health services - mainly GPs and dentists - air/environmental quality, green spaces, amenities and leisure facilities. With its Butterybank community woodland, park and blue spaces like the Burn, Coupar Angus did well in this analysis. If you are fit and healthy you may be gratified by this result. If however you are less fortunate, this particular league table will have less appeal. But it is salutary to learn that your home town has many advantages.

This is particularly true if the issues are local. There can, however, be a degree of cynicism: ‘Am I being asked what I think only to give the process the appearance of validity? No-one will pay any attention anyway.’ Trust is therefore paramount, that those doing the consulting haven’t already made up their minds and will listen to the answers they get. Bearing all that in mind, it’s encouraging to learn that, as we reported in the previous issue, there will indeed be a survey/questionnaire about the Town Hall, to find out what the community thinks the future should be for this landmark building. The consultation runs till the end of January 2020. Forms will be distributed in the town, or returns can be made online at http://consult.pkc.gov.uk/ - look for Coupar Angus Town Hall. Forward Coupar Angus has also run its own consultation on the theme of ‘Where Now?’ This was a well-attended and lively meeting, eliciting a high degree of participation, which in turn produced a wealth of ideas.

    A Guide to the History and Culture of Highland Perthshire through the Archive Dick Fotheringham, bell ringer in the Aberfeldy area, c1930s Ref: MS316/31 Perth & Kinross Council Archive 1 Foreword While I have been a member of the Friends of Perth & Kinross Council Archive for some time I only became a Committee member last year. Thus my being asked to become the chair of the Committee at this year’s AGM was, from my perspective, rather rapid promotion! Now I have been given the great honour of writing this foreword to the Friends’ latest publication, a survey and guide to sources of information on every aspect of life in Highland Perthshire as encapsulated in the collections of the Archive. In it you will find a comprehensive overview of the huge range of collections relevant to this topic including history, genealogy, industry, settlements, estates and anything else you may be interested in. Some of the material is “official”, like local authority documents, police and Justice of the Peace records. However, there is also guidance on exploring community-based collections put together by local people who were determined their “story” would live on and be accessible to anyone who was interested. There are also many illustrations of documents of different types with informative notes beside each one. These are, of course, merely a glimpse of the rich and varied sources which exist and can be explored with the help of the staff of the Archive. A feature which we hope will be seen as innovative, and was the brainchild of the authors, is a specimen analysis of a document which is designed to show you what you can learn from it whether you are a family, house or local historian, or just interested in maximising the information that a document can provide.
