The Coupe Icare president and team of organizers address their sincere condolences to the numerous victims and close relations of the Covid-19 pandemic. Although this 48th edition will naturally adapt to the evolution of the crisis, our intention is to reignite the unique spirit of Icare this year. We believe it essential to carry on dreaming and sharing despite circumstances, and of course with all due respect to sanitary conditions. The rendez-vous of the Coupe Icare is essential for all participants in the great wide world of air sports: pilots, manufacturers, federations.... It is the opportune occasion to build partnerships, sign contracts, present new designs and techniques… And to discover the beauty of our world on giant screens, to learn about other aerial disciplines, to buy and sell equipment and participate in the realm of free flight. Last year’s 8-day agenda has been reprogrammed for 2021. This year the public will have more days to enjoy the show. If the C-virus continues to stir up trouble after the summer, we will adapt to the sanitary measures required then. So, you can count on the Coupe Icare making a comeback in 2021. How? That is still the question. But know that we are working hard to continue Icare’s dream, in spite of all the obstacles the entire planet has been tackling over the past year. th Press Kit / Page 4 48 Coupe Icare - 12/19 SEPT. 2021 - FRENCH ALPS In the heart of the The Coupe Icare Isère Alps THE NOT-TO-BE-MISSED ANNUAL RENDEZ-VOUS FOR NEARLY 50 YEARS In 1974, about a dozen passionate pilots, daring to take up the new discipline of hang gliding, met up on the slopes of the Chartreuse range. Since then, every year in September, several thousand spectators and pilots have been gathering to celebrate human flight and air sports at the Coupe Icare on the site of St-Hilaire / Lumbin, barely a 30-minute drive from Grenoble and Chambéry. Since this beginning, the Coupe Icare has been largely supported by the local communes of Saint-Hilaire and Lumbin, attached to the Grésivaudan community of communes, the department of Isère and region of Auvergne- Rhône-Alpes.. The Coupe-Icare.Org Association is assisted on site by 1200 volunteers, who loyally return to this annual meeting of marvelous humans and their flying machines. Every year, 700 experienced pilots from a dozen different aerial disciplines become the actors of extraordinarily daring air presentations and feats, Icare’s Costumed Flight Contest, being the most celebrated of all. However, the Coupe Icare is far more than a spectacle in the sky for curious spectators. Since the 80s, it has become the International Free (and other) Flight Film Festival and a huge international trade fair for leisure flying. Today it includes discovery activities for children, professional encounters, sassy street shows… plus the latest addition: a 3-day Icare Test on a site devoted solely to paragliding. Similar to other outdoor sports, manufacturers will propose paragliding equipment and accessory tests right at the take-off area. Over the years, the Coupe Icare, born in the little mountain enclave with no more than 1500 habitants, grew to become the biggest gathering for free flying and light aircraft in the world.
