    Kaloka, Keri, Bongga: Pakahulugan at Pahiwatig ng Gay Language sa mga Piling Pelikula ni Vice Ganda Generoso Pamittan, Jr., Chari Amado, Victoria Amante, and Feorillo P.A. Demeterio III Using the framework of Pragmatics and Grice’s (2012) cooperative principle and conversational maxims, this paper dissects the gay language’s contextual meanings, and effects on narrative and characterization as used in Vice Ganda’s selected hit films. This paper also scrutinizes the socio-cultural-political implications of the use of gay language as manifested in the role and image of the gay-language-speaking characters and how these might actually reflect empowerment and/or oppression of gays in a heteronormative society. Analyses indicate that while the use of gay language may not be indicative of gays’ social class or status, it reflects the experience, culture and discipline in which the gay takes part. Further, while Vice Ganda’s brand of humor and personality are still apparent and that gay language was used to induce laughter, it cannot be denied that, amidst society’s minoritization of gays, there are deeper underlying meanings and significance for such use of gay language. The world celebration was tempered, however, by unease over Earth's vulnerability to terrorism and its dependence on computer technology. The excitement was typified by the Pacific archipelago nation of Kiribati, so eager to be first to see the millennium that it actually shifted its portion of the international dateline two hours east. The caution was exemplified by Seattle, which canceled its New Year's party for fear of terrorism. In the Philippines, President Benigno Aquino III is bracing for a “tough” new year. At the same time, he called on Filipinos to pray for global peace and brotherhood and to work as one in facing the challenges of the 21st century. Tamayo Introduction Philippine cinema in 2012 can be pretty summed up by the box-office triumph of a most unlikely release in The Mistress and the international presence for the country’s national cinema courtesy of Brillante Mendoza. The Mistress is from the country’s leading studio, Star Cinema and is the kind of adult romance that is a throwback to love triangles of circa-1960s dramas involving the likes of Eddie Rodriguez, Lolita Rodriguez and Marlene Dauden in the film cast. It’s not exactly family fare and its success at the tills may hint at the changing dynamics of audience taste and patterns of consumption for local movies. As to the waves the country made overseas, two films directed by Mendoza gained significance. Captive—by all means an international film with a French legendary actress Isabelle Huppert in the lead role—vied for top plum at the main competition in Berlin. Superstar Nora Aunor’s comeback, Thy Womb, managed to land a slot in turn in Venice similarly for main competition. With a phenomenon that may prove distinct for Philippine cinema, industry production was much propelled by a kind of festival craze.
