Friday June 24 2011 SCOTTISH CATHOLIC OBSERVER SUPPORT YOUR NATIONAL CATHOLIC NEWSPAPER CHURCH IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 21 Salute to the men of Faith on the frontline DR HARRY SCHNITKER continues his extensive series looking at the role played by the Catholic Church during the Second World War THE CHURCH IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR

ROM the perspective of the British Isles, the Second World War was first and foremost a European con- flict. Most will be aware that Ftroops went to fight in the Far East, but this was a side-show, and correctly so: Japan, unlike Nazi Germany, did not threaten the existence of the country. However, the war had a distinctly non- European element, much more so than the First World War. This was partly the result of the reach of Britain’s Empire. Troops from the Dominions, but also from India, the Caribbean and Africa served on all fronts under the Union Flag. In addition, the attack on Pearl Harbor brought the US into the war. Other European countries also had extensive overseas colonies. France was deeply involved in Vietnam and North Africa, the Dutch in Indonesia, and the Italians in Ethiopia and Libya. Some of these theatres of the war have already had a brief men- tion, but it is frequently forgotten what a great flow of Catholic soldiers came from many of these non-European countries. In addition, local Catholics in the Far East, as well as European missionaries, became the victim of an anti-colonial reaction, fed by Japanese propaganda that identified Christians, including Catholics, as part of European domi- nance and exploitation. Finally, Japan had a small but prominent Catholic Church of its own, and these members of Christ’s Body were especially affect- ed by the war.
