The Village of Stirling is one of three communities in Canada designated as a National Historic Site and is the largest village in Alberta with a population of 1,269 residents as of the 2018 municipal census. While Stirling is proud of its agricultural heritage, the community is also actively preparing for the future with high speed “fibre to the premise” broadband service available to more than 85% of households. In addition, solar arrays on public buildings (including the school) will offset municipal power consumption needs and soon result in a near “net zero” community. The newly modernized Stirling School is the heart of our community. I hope you enjoy the improved facilities and amenities our school provides. Countless volunteers have worked hard to organize this event to ensure a safe and memorable battle for that championship banner. I wish to express my appreciation to everyone that has helped make the event possible. Michael Jordan is perhaps one of the greatest players of the game. It’s important to remember that he started as a kid who couldn’t even make the JV team. He started out as a kid that, by his own assessment, wasn’t that good. As he noted, “I have failed and failed and failed over again in my life. That is why I have succeeded.” There will be wins to celebrate and there will be losses to endure this weekend but every team has earned a right to be part of the championship through your hard work all season. Congratulations for reaching this point. Even if you don’t win, you still learn. Using that learning to move forward is what being a champion is really all about. Welcome to our community. I look forward to watching the action on the court! This gym is barely a year old and we are excited to show it off to all in attendance for the next three days. Our gym is here because of the forward thinking of some community members and the support of our Westwind School Division. Thank you to Mr. Joey Lutz for organizing this tournament along with countless staff members, students and community members, we could not have done it without you. We would also like to thank Mr. Todd Heggie and some Raymond School staff members for assisting us with the opening round games in the Raymond High School. Athletes and coaches, you have worked hard for the past four months to get to this point. You are the twelve teams out of many in Alberta, who will have an opportunity to compete for the provincial title this weekend. Play hard, do your best, utilize the skills you have attained along the way, show good sportsmanship, and have fun. It is my hope that you will play to the best of your abilities and create memories that you will look back on with great fondness. Welcome and good luck.
