  • Cricket Mix Optimization Using Heuristic Framework After Ensuring Markovian Equilibrium
Journal of Sports Analytics 7 (2021) 155–168 155 DOI 10.3233/JSA-200479 IOS Press Cricket mix optimization using heuristic framework after ensuring Markovian equilibrium Subhasis Raya,∗ and Soma Roychowdhuryb aBusiness Analytics and Systems Management, Indian Institute of Social Welfare & Business Management, College Square West, Kolkata, West Bengal, India bIndian Institute of Social Welfare & Business Management, College Square West, Kolkata, West Bengal, India Abstract. International Cricket Council, in consultation with its member boards, prepares the Future Tours and Programme (FTP) which is an eight year long itinerary covering world championships in three formats of cricket, bilateral series and other tournaments. However, the FTP (2015–2023) had been criticized for its asymmetric itinerary and the point system for World Test championship and the FTP (2023–2031) is being criticized for including eight championships in limited formats and enhanced workload for players. Cricket mix standardization like marketing and product mix can work in homogeneous markets. This study derives three homogeneous markets of four teams each using hierarchical cluster analysis. For each market, it finds out the Markovian equilibrium analyzing cricket mix transition over past years. While the same can be used to derive the number of games per format per country, the study proposes a heuristic approach for fine tuning the same taking care of major stakeholders’ (e.g. Administrators, Players and Spectators) aspirations. Despite scores of criticisms and articles on the issue, there is hardly any scholastic contribution on game scheduling in the extant literature. This study thus is a pioneering effort in helping the policy makers to create a balance between cricket formats within each homogeneous market.

Much like the UN, the ICC brings representatives from all cricket-playing countries together to make administrative decisions about the future of cricket. Unlike the UN, however, not all countries have an equal input; the ICC decides which members are worthy of “Test” status (Full Members), and which are not (Associate Members). While the Council has experienced many successes, including hosting the prestigious World Cup and promoting cricket at a grassroots level, it also continues to receive its fair share of criticism, predominantly regarding the ICC’s perceived obstruction of the growth of the game within non- traditionally cricketing nations and prioritizing the commercialization of the sport over globalizing it.

  • 1 a “Second Class” Megamediasport Event? the International Cricket
A “Second Class” MegaMediaSport Event? The International Cricket Council Cricket World Cup Dominic Malcolm, Loughborough University (UK) Thomas Fletcher, Leeds Beckett University (UK) Introduction 2015 was the least eventful men’s International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup (CWC) of the 21st Century. 1 Its single ‘major’ controversy came when ICC President, Bangladesh’s Mustafa Kamal, threatened to resign from his non-executive post if an umpiring decision which, he felt, led to his nation’s exit from the tournament was not investigated. Subsequently, he was excluded from the trophy presentation ceremony and retaliated by threatening to reveal "mischievous things" taking place in the politics of international cricket (ICC President, 2015, March 30). There is, of course, some irony in the portrayal of this CWC as uneventful for these quadrennial events are frequently marred by controversy. The 2011 CWC was awarded to a joint India-Pakistan-Bangladesh-Sri Lanka bid that was submitted late. After being de-selected as co-hosts due to security concerns, Pakistan initiated legal proceedings against the ICC (Samiuddin, 2009). During the tournament, Bangladesh fans attacked the West Indian team bus and fought police following victory over England (Bandyopadhyay, 2013). Four years before that the CWC, staged in eight different Caribbean states, was dogged by speculation that the Pakistani coach, the former England cricketer, Bob Woolmer, had been murdered (Malcolm et al., 2010). In 2003 England and New Zealand forfeited matches due to security concerns in Zimbabwe and Kenya; and, in England’s case, in diplomatic protest at human rights abuses in Zimbabwe (Holden, 2010). One of the world’s leading players, Australia’s Shane Warne, also failed a drugs test.

The format of the tournament has a very different shape to that we have previously provided since the program started in 1997. Due to the additional resources in terms of grounds which Belgium has, the tournament will be played to a 40-over format, allowing Division 4 teams to play a longer game than usual at this level. Due to the withdrawal of the Czech Republic, four teams will compete in a round robin format, and with the first year of the new European structure at this level the winners will be promoted to the 2007 Division 3 tournament. As there is an additional day due to the change of format, an inaugural European Division 4 Twenty/20 Challenge will take place on Day 5, allowing all teams the chance to experience the shorter version of the game as is now part of an ICC World Championship in South Africa in 2007.
