Penn State, the 2005 conference champion, claimed three of the four individual honors as Tiffany Weimer was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. Lindsay Bach was named a Co-Defensive Player of the Year which she shares with Illinois’ Christen Karniski. Nittany Lion head coach Paula Wilkins was honored as Coach of the Year for the fourth time in her career. Purdue’s Jessica Okoroafo also claimed an individual laurel as she was tabbed Freshman of the Year. A preseason Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy candidate, Weimer dominated the weekly honors, as she earned Offensive Player of the Week four times this year. The senior broke the Big Ten record for career goals with 84 and tied the NCAA record with a 17 consecutive-game scoring streak this season. She has tallied 25 goals and nine game-winners thus far, while leading the league in five different categories. Karniski is part of an Illinois defense that has recorded seven shutouts with just a 1.11 goals allowed average. Bach has helped the Nittany Lions shut out a league-leading 10 opponents with only 13 goals allowed this year. Okoroafo is the first Boilermaker to claim Freshman of the Year honors. A two-time recipient of Offensive Player of the Week this season, Okoroafo has made an immediate impact on the field for Purdue as she has posted 10 goals, six game-winners and a goals per game average of 0.56 on the year. Wilkins becomes the first women’s coach to earn three straight Coach of the Year accolades. Wilkins guided the Nittany Lions to a perfect 19-0 overall record, their best regular season finish ever and a perfect 10-0 mark in conference play for the second consecutive year. Penn State is currently ranked No. 1 in the latest NSCAA/adidas National Rankings and enters this year’s Big Ten Tournament as the top seed. The conference office also announced honorees from each team for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Honorees for women’s soccer are Illinois’ Karniski, Indiana’s Kristen Zmijewski, Iowa’s Whitney Strain, Michigan’s Katelin Spencer, Michigan State’s Nina Mastracci, Minnesota’s Kelsey Hood, Northwestern’s Julie Lipinski, Ohio State’s Melissa Miller, Penn State’s Bach, Purdue’s Rebecca Robison and Wisconsin’s Jessica Ring. These eleven student-athletes are now candidates for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year. -second page- The complete 2005 All-Big Ten Teams follow: 2005 Women’s Soccer All-Big Ten Teams Position First Team Second Team Forward Melissa Dobbyn, MICH Lisa Collison, OSU Emma Harris, MSU Jessica Okoroafo, PUR TIFFANY WEIMER, PSU Amy Vermeulen, WIS Lauren Sesselmann, PUR Midfield Kristen Zmijewski, IND Tabitha Lowey, NU ALI KRIEGER, PSU Lara Dickenmann, OSU Kara Kabellis, WIS Allie Long, PSU Defense Christen Karniski, ILL Skylar Andrews, MICH Lindsay Bach, PSU Nicki Burnie, MINN Marisa Brown, WIS Melissa Miller, OSU Natalie Jacobs, PSU Goalkeeper *Erin McLeod, PSU *Molly Schneider, MINN 2005 Women’s Soccer All-Freshman Team Position Forward Molly Kruger, IND Lisa Collison, OSU Jessica Okoroafo, PUR Midfield *Marti Desjarlais, ILL *Danelle Underwood, MICH Kelsey Hood, MINN *Sheree Gray, PSU Allie Long, PSU Defense Emily Zurrer, ILL Skylar Andrews, MICH Clare Grimwood, MINN Laura Janowitsch, NU Goalkeeper COURTNEY CRIPPS, OSU Sportsmanship Award Honorees Christen Karniski, ILL Kristen Zmijewski, IND Whitney Strain, IOWA Katelin Spencer, MICH Nina Mastracci, MSU Becky Dellaria, MINN Julie Lipinski, NU Melissa Miller, OSU Lindsay Bach, PSU Rebecca Robison, PUR Jessica Ring, WIS Offensive Player of the Year: TIFFANY WEIMER, PSU Co-Defensive Player of the Year: Christen Karniski, ILL, Lindsay Bach, PSU Freshman of the Year: Jessica Okoroafo, PUR Coach of the Year: Paula Wilkins, PSU UNANIMOUS SELECTIONS IN ALL CAPS * Tie ### .

MONDAY, JUNE 29, 2015 SPORTS England dump hosts Canada Canadians collapse in tears VANCOUVER: England scored twice in three first-half minutes then held on to beat hosts Canada 2-1 on Saturday and book a spot in the Women’s World Cup semi-finals against Japan. The hosts had been hoping to secure the semi-final spot against the defending champions on Canada Day, July 1, in Edmonton but instead it was England who moved into the last four of a World Cup for the first time. England coach Mark Sampson paid tribute to the opposi- tion and fans. “I have never been in a stadium as loud, as pas- sionate for their team as that was, they couldn’t have pushed us any further we had to really, really dig deep today to get the result we wanted,” he told reporters. “They’ve shown a desire I have never seen in an England team before to hang on in there and get us through to the next round.” Without a men’s or women’s World Cup title since 1966, and exasperated by another failure at the men’s U21 European Championships, the “Lionesses” have become the toast of England. “We’re history makers again, only the third England team to get to a semi-final, we have now joined that 1966 and 1990 club, very, very proud of the whole group,” beamed Sampson. EDMONTON: Japan’s Nahomi Kawasumi (9) and Australia’s Samantha Kerr (20) battle After conceding just one goal in four matches, Canada sur- for the ball during second half of FIFA Women’s World Cup quarter-final action.

  • Marketing of Professional Women's Soccer in the United States
MARKETING OF PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S SOCCER IN THE UNITED STATES THROUGH FEMINIST THEORIES by CHRISTOPHER HENDERSON (Under the Direction of James J. Zhang) ABSTRACT Despite the success of the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT), two women’s soccer leagues have quickly failed in the U.S. This doctoral dissertation examines the past and present of the marketing of professional women’s soccer in the United States emphasizing feminist themes to fulfill three objectives: (a) to critically examine the history of the marketing of women’s soccer in the United States to identify and gain a better comprehension of changes in theory and practice of marketing in women’s soccer in the U.S. over time; (b) to identify and explain the use of three feminist themes in the marketing of women’s soccer, specifically in the NWSL; and (c) to analyze the impact of these three feminist themes on the related marketing strategies used within in the NWSL in an effort to build a framework while also developing recommendations for marketing practitioners for the promotion and marketing of professional women’s soccer in the United States. The historical analysis segment revealed that the failure of the first two professional women’s soccer leagues in the United States were largely a result of poor resource allocation and an inability to connect with and retain fans, the media, and sponsors. The Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) burned through capital at an unsustainable rate and was unable to maintain the excitement of the 1999 Women’s World Cup, leading to microscopic television ratings and perennially falling attendance.

On this trip we were able to build on some excellent relationships whilst also taking in plenty of ideas we can potentially bring home to implicate here at Calgary Foothills. Our first point of call was to meet former Foothills academy coach and player Manny Nunez who coaches at Espanyol. He gave us a tour of the first team training ground and the academy fields. The first thing we noticed was the condition of the fields. The fields were immaculate, like a bowling green made of carpet. We spent 4 days with the club and watched every session from U8 to First team. Each session started with an arrival activity at Standard took the time to show Wayne and I around the training ground. Anderlecht academy players or a dynamic activity from Rondo’s to co-ordination work. As soon as the session started every player became will train 4 times a week, with one of those days being during a school day in which they supplement active and straight into the flow with little time to set up.
