Sundance Institute Theatre Program Awards New Play Commission FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: September 21, 2011 Casey De La Rosa 310.360.1981 [email protected] SUNDANCE INSTITUTE THEATRE PROGRAM AWARDS NEW PLAY COMMISSION Funds Allow Playwright Lemon Andersen to Complete ToasT New York, NY — The Sundance Institute Theatre Program has awarded a commission to playwright Lemon Andersen for completion of his new play, ToasT . The $4,500 commission represents a portion of support for Mr. Anderson, complementing his residency last season at the Sundance Institute Playwrights Retreat at Ucross Foundation. The grant represents a partnership with The Public Theater’s Under The Radar (UTR), which is also contributing to Mr. Lemon’s work, and is supported by a 2008-2011 grant to the Theatre Program from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Andersen began developing ToasT while at the 2011 Sundance Institute Playwrights Retreat at Ucross Foundation in Wyoming. Andersen received a grant from UTR to attend the Retreat, where Sundance Institute provided travel, accommodations and creative support. “UTR realized the importance of supporting this artist and his project, and their initial funds enabled Andersen to participate in the Retreat where ToasT was born,” said Philip Himberg, Producing Artistic Director of the Sundance Institute Theatre Program. “We’re pleased to deepen our relationship with UTR through this commission. The model we’re exploring here, of collaborating with a like-minded organization to further the development of special projects, holds enormous potential for our program, moving forward, and is yet another example of how we support artists throughout the different stages of their creative process.” ToasT is about Willie Green, also known as “Dolomite,” the famous folklore hero from the old Black Narratives. In the play, convicted murderer Dolomite has spent the last 27 years in prison with his cellmates and other folklore heroes like Jesse James, Hobo Ben, Voodoo Queen, Shine the Stoker, Stackolee and Hard Rock. As rumors of an impending riot within the prison spread, Dolomite and his cellmates must decide whether to join the riot or resist, in hopes of a promised parole date and the chance to taste freedom. The title of the play refers to an art form of reciting poetry based on characters and situations driven from the Black experience. Andersen is an original cast member of Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam on Broadway and he has the most aired episodes on HBO's Def Poetry. Shakespearean trained at the Public Theater, his film acting credits include The Soloist , The Son Of No One , Miracle At St. Anna , Sucker Free City , She Hate Me and Inside Man . His theater credits include Slanguage , which was directed by Jo Bonney and premiered at the New York Theater Workshop. He is currently touring County of Kings , which was produced by Spike Lee and the Culture Project at the Public Theater. His poetry has been featured on radio spots, print ads and the limited edition ABSOLUT BROOKLYN. Lemon was born, raised, and currently resides in Brooklyn. Under the supervision of Philip Himberg, Producing Artistic Director, and Associate Director Christopher Hibma, the Theatre Program hosts creative Labs throughout the year and around the world, including the PAGE 2 Sundance Institute Theatre Lab at Sundance Resort (submissions accepted through November 15 at http://www.sundance.org/theatreapp ), Theatre Lab at White Oak for musicals and ensemble- generated/devised projects (by invitation only), Playwrights Retreat at Ucross Foundation (by invitation only) and Sundance Institute East Africa. • Writer Lemon Andersen
ToasT a play by Lemon Andersen directed by Elise Thoron DESCRIPTION In 1971, an inmate had to choose between going home after twenty-seven years of imprisonment or joining the uprising in Attica. ToasT is a new play by Lemon Andersen that celebrates the poetic history of Black narratives called "Toasts". The play takes fictional characters from this oral tradition and puts them in a non-fictional setting (Attica Prison) . The most famous hero from the toast tradition "Willie Green", also known as "Dolomite", has been locked up for the past twenty-seven years in Attica's D-block for multiple counts of murder. He shares the prison with other folklore heroes like Jesse James, Hobo Ben, Stackolee, and Hard Rock. They kill the hard prison time spending their days sharing war stories, playing cards, and drinking hooch. The brutal conditions these inmates are living in pushes the young hotheaded Hard Rock to lead a revolution. He spends his time trying to convince his fellow inmates to join him in an uprising even if it means sacrificing their lives. Behind Hard Rock's preaching about grievances lies the real story of Dolomite secretly being given an unexpected early release date. Having to tell his fellow inmates about his release is defeating his soul. Every time Dolomite has a chance to tell the inmates, his moment to reveal the truth is interrupted by daily prison culture, Hard Rock's rants, and signifying toasts. As temperature rises and an uprising approaches, Hard Rock is taken by the guards, what will Dolomite do? BACKGROUND "Toast" is an art form of reciting poetry based on characters and situations derived from the Black experience, mostly told and performed in the prisons, bars, and pool halls of America.

  • Musical Among Highlights of New Public Theater Lineup by Patrick Healy
April 23, 2014 ‘Fortress of Solitude’ Musical Among Highlights of New Public Theater Lineup By Patrick Healy A new musical based on Jonathan Lethem’s acclaimed novel “The Fortress of Solitude,” as well as another new musical by the creators of the Tony Award-winning show “Passing Strange,” are among the productions in the Public Theater’s 2014-15 season line-up that the theater announced on Monday. The season will begin in early September with 200 actors, musicians and average New Yorkers taking part in Shakespeare’s “The Winter’s Tale” at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, where the director Lear deBessonet and the composer Todd Almond are teaming up again after their similarly conceived production of “The Tempest” ran there to critical praise last September. “The Fortress of Solitude,” one of three new musicals at the Public next season, will begin performances Sept. 30, following a run this spring at Dallas Theater Center (which is a co-producer with the Public). The show, a coming-of-age story about two teenage friends fascinated by super-heroes in 1970s Brooklyn, is directed by Daniel Aukin (“4000 Miles”) and features music and lyrics by Michael Friedman (“Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson”) and a book by Itamar Moses (“Nobody Loves You”). A new play by Pulitzer Prize-winner Suzan-Lori Parks, “Father Comes Home from the Wars (Parts 1, 2, & 3),” an epic set during the Civil War, will start Oct. 14; Jo Bonney will direct. Another new play, “Straight White Men,” written and directed by Young Jean Lee, will begin in November.

Voters making selections in their own branch categories list only film titles on their ballots, not the individuals responsible for the various achievements. For that reason, as well as for reasons of printing time and convenience of using this pamphlet, full credit rosters are not provided for the listed films. An exception to the above exists in the four Acting categories, where simply listing titles would not provide enough voting information. Actors Branch members filling out their Nominations ballots must indicate both titles and the particular performers they are voting for. For that reason, the Reminder List provides a listing of up to fifty cast members for each film. Pictures eligible in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature and Foreign Language Film categories are also eligible in the Best Picture category, provided they meet the qualifications for the category.
