SPECIAL FEATURE on ALBERT KETÈLBEY .. Full name: Albert William Ketèlbey {Ketelbey} Birth: 9th August 1875 (Birmingham. England) Death: 26th November 1959 - Isle of Wight, England .. .. Albert Ketèlbey was an English composer, conductor and pianist - AND an occasional cellist! - who is best known for his short pieces of light orchestral music. .. He was born in Birmingham and showed a natural talent for the piano and singing, and he became head chorister at St Silas' Church in nearby Lozells. At the age of eleven Ketèlbey joined the Birmingham and Midland Institute School of Music, now the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. At the age of thirteen Ketèlbey composed his first serious piece of music, "Sonata for Pianoforte" which his biographer Tom McCanna said "shows a precocious mastery of composition". In all he studied piano, organ, cello, clarinet, oboe and horn - however it is said that CELLO was his favourite instrument!! .

1994 April p.48 http://www.gramophone.net/Issue/Page/April%201994/50/798775/ Ketelbey British Light Music. Slovak Philharmonic Male Chorus; Bratislava Radio Symphony Orchestra/ Adrian Leaper. Marco Polo ® ® 8 223442 (74 minutes: DDD). In a Monastery Gardena. The Adventurers. Chal Romano. Suite romantique. Caprice pianistique. The Clock and the Dresden Figures. Cockney Suite—No. 3, At the Palais de Danse; No. 5, Bank Holiday. In the Moonlight. Wedgwood Blue. Bells across the meadows. Phantom melody. In a Persian Marketa. Selected comparison. Philh, Lanchbery (3/94) (CFP) CD-CFP4637 What a splendid CD! If there has been a disappointment with this enterprising series, it is that the quality of music and interpretation in some of the issues has not always maintained the high standard of the Haydn Wood CD in the first release (8/92). But no such problem here. The obvious favourites (In a Monastery Garden, In a Persian Market, Bells across the meadows) are played with a grace and sensitivity that never invites unfavourable comparison with earlier recordings of the same pieces. If others in the same somewhat maudlin vein (In the Mystic Land of Egypt, Ina Chinese Temple Garden, Sanctuary of the Heart) are missing, it is to give us the opportunity to hear some of Ketèlbey's unjustly overshadowed compositions. And what delights there are! Over-exposure to Ketelbey's more stereotyped, highly perfumed compositions has disguised what varied and inventive music he composed. We know the charms of The Clock and the Dresden Figures and In the Moonlight, the invigorating open-air spirit of C/ta! Romano from the Lanchbery collection recently reissued on Classics for Pleasure.

  • Contemporary References 1920-1924
CONTEMPORARY REFERENCES 1920-1924 SELECTED FROM THE DATABASES BRITISH NEWSPAPER ARCHIVE AND TIMES DIGITAL ARCHIVE Ketèlbey became a household name during this period. His works were played by the growing number of light orchestras and military bands. The growth of the gramophone record industry and the advent of public broadcasting helped spread his fame. He still conducted recordings for Columbia, and made guest appearances around the country conducting his own compositions. He was so successful that a backlash began to appear. - TMcC This selection omits repeated adverts, and also most references to concert programmes (including broadcasts) which merely list works performed without any value judgement. Mid Sussex Times, Tuesday 23rd March 1920 LINDFIELD… ORGAN RECITAL. Mr. H. Madle, the brilliant organist of St. Bartholomew’s Church, Brighton, gave an organ recital at the Parish Church last (Monday) evening in aid of the Organ and Choir Fund, and the congregation was deeply impressed by the ability displayed and the happy choice of the selections presented. These were as follow: - … “Andante in F” (Ketelby) … [I haven’t been able to identify this mystery piece for sure, but In a Monastery Garden is an Andante Espressivo in F] Montrose, Arbroath and Brechin Review, Friday 30th July 1920 THE KING’S PLAYHOUSE. … The musical programme will include the following:- … Selection. “The New Aladdin.” Ketelby. [Ketèlbey was merely the arranger of this selection, actually composed by Ivan Caryll & Lionel Monckton] The Sound Wave, August 1920 BOSWORTH AND Co. In all that he does Albert Ketélby is faithful to a high ideal. There is no dilettantism about his work, neither does he display any pedantry, though few there are who know more of orchestral work than he.

  • Decca Discography
DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>3 GREAT BRITAIN: ffss, 1954-81 Work for American record companies (notably Mercury and Everest) helped the LSO to raise its standards and convince Decca, by around 1962, that the finest symphony orchestra available (with the arguable exception of the VPO) could be regularly heard at the Royal Festival Hall, a few minutes walk away from 9, Albert Embankment, where the company had opened Decca House as its new headquarters in 1958. Then in 1964 the New Philharmonia, disowned by Walter Legge, began to record for Decca, as did the Academy of St.Martin in the Fields, having moved from L’Oiseau-Lyre to Argo. With the English Chamber Orchestra and RPO also available, London had a short spell of orchestral pre- eminence before Decca started shifting sessions to North America. It had also added Joan Sutherland’s sessions to its traditional operatic repertoire of Sullivan and Britten and maintained its importance in chamber music and instrumental recordings, particularly with Ashkenazy from 1963 and the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble on Argo from 1968. In the early 1970s the advent of Anthony Rooley, the Consort of Musicke, Emma Kirkby, Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music brought a fresh look at repertoire from Dowland to Purcell, Handel, Mozart and eventually Beethoven. Solti recorded with the LPO from 1972 and the National Philharmonic was booked regularly from 1974-84. Also during the 1970s the London Sinfonietta’s surveys of Schönberg and Janá ček were recorded. Ashkenazy’s second career as a conductor centred initially on London, with the Philharmonia from 1977 and the RPO from 1987.
