The spacious, board-and-batten building, situated among hoop houses and well- tended fields, is the latest enterprise of Daniel Weaver, an Amish farmer and en- trepreneur who came with his family to the Butternut Valley several years ago from Ohio. The new store has become a com- munity fixture since opening in May, and enhances the quality-of-life for area resi- dents who have seen other mom-and-pop stores close through the years. Inside, aisles of local, organic and Amish-sourced foods are neat and well- spaced, which makes shopping enjoyable. The store operation blends the modern (electric lights, registers, and coolers) with tradition-based standards Pathfinder Adult Day Services member — limited advertising, cash payments, and employees Chelsea Lippa arranges Pathfinder Village wearing plain garb. Central to all is Mr. Weaver, a bespectacled mid- dle-aged patriarch with a salt-and-pepper beard, who cordially greets visitors as his adult daugh- ters and others wait on customers at the deli and registers. It’s already busy by mid-morning when Pathfinder’s Adult Day Services members Chris Scott, Brandy Mockoviack, and Rebecca Brown stop in to check the Village Bakery’s display, prominently placed at the front of the store. On Mondays, the ADS members assist with cleaning the store. He is confident as he describes his business plans, but his features noticeably soften as he watches Pathfinder’s ADS members restock the baked good display. “The Pathfinder baked goods are always popular, people know what to expect,” he says. “I just love working with these folks. Chelsea … I call her the manager and she does her work ex- tremely well. I enjoy getting a smile from her.” "I’m the display manager. I put out breads, soups and cookie mixes," explains ADS member Chelsea Lippa. "I go to the store four days a week, Tuesday through Friday. It’s more responsibili- ties and people rely on me; it makes me feel good inside." "Everyone is focused on doing a good job there," she adds. "I am too, and I want to make my team proud. " “Everyone truly does a good job, and it’s good for our business that they are here,” Mr. Weaver adds thoughtfully. “We find there’s a connection and community between Pathfinder Village and Weaver’s Farm Market. But it’s more than that: It creates a warm feeling within everyone, to see the Pathfinder display and to see the residents cleaning and delivering baked goods here. It’s a connection beyond that of our other vendors.” “All I can say is thank you to the individuals because it’s been a blessing to Weaver’s Farm Market and to us as a family,” he concludes. “I love what they do, and I hope it can continue for a long, long time.” 6 Positively Pathfinder | Autumn 2019 Your accounts have numbers, but you have a name. • Smith Writes Off Failed HOF Bid in Final Year of Eligibility on Ballot
Smith writes off failed HOF bid in final year of eligibility on writers’ ballot By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Wednesday, January 18, 2017 The announcement hardly came as a shock to Lee Arthur Smith when the Chicago Baseball Museum called the for- mer Cubs closer with bad news a few minutes after the Jan. 18 Hall of Fame vote was announced. “I think I’m just going to write it off,” Smith said of fall- ing short of induction in his 15th and final year of eligibil- ity on the Baseball Writers Association of America ballot- ing. Now Smith is remanded to whatever latter-day name the old Veterans Committee takes. And that panel only meets every three years to consider the late 20th century period group in which Smith pitched. “Maybe if the veterans thing comes around, but I don’t Lee Smith knew he'd fall short think I’ll be paying too much attention,” said a philo- in Hall of Fame voting. sophical Smith. One man’s meat always is another man’s poison in Hall of Fame voting. Tim Raines, with two distinguished tenures as a White Sox player and coach, is going in with Jeff Bagwell and Ivan Rodriguez. Meanwhile, Smith has to take his proverbial glove and ball, and go home even after ranking as the all-time saves leader not long ago. Smith, working for many years as the Giants’ roving minor-league pitching instructor, has long stopped rationalizing the voting process in which he started off relatively strong, then lost ground through recent years.

A’s News Clips, Friday, October 16, 2009 One of the best teams ever Bruce Jenkins, Chronicle Staff Writer Spring training brought its usual spirit of renewal in 1990, but it wasn't the same around the A's camp. In a sense, the ground was still trembling. Oakland had just won a World Series interrupted by earthquake, rendering more trivial matters insignificant against the burden of recovery. At the sight of Dave Stewart, you pictured him helping victims amid the rubble of the Nimitz Freeway. A glimpse of Terry Steinbach and you were back at Candlestick as he held his wife, Mary, so tightly on the field. Even the most notable game details seemed vague, to the point where the first two games (in Oakland) were - and remain - a virtual blank. This became the forgotten World Series, never to gain its proper recognition. Combine the fateful Oct. 17 with the latter-day stigma of steroids, and you have an A's team struggling for a place in history - although it's hardly a mystery in this corner. Without hesitation, I rank the '89 A's among the five greatest teams in history. Funny thing about those "top five" lists. They tend to expand, uncontrollably. Can a surfer really isolate his five best waves? Would a jazz aficionado be able to stop after naming five great sax solos? How about your five favorite songs, or movies? It's the top five, and it's 38-deep. In baseball, any such examination begins with the 1927 Yankees of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and so many more.
