My father was an English teacher, and my mother taught Arabic. My parents taught me that a good education can help one to be successful in life, gain respect, and make a good living; that worked really well for both of them. They have been able to support our family, and they taught me that education is vital for success by the way they lived their lives. When I was growing up in Iraq, women were expected to marry early and stay at home. A woman might study up until the time of her marriage, sometimes, as young as age 15, but not usually after that. When I was eight or nine, I realized that my goals were not the same as most other girls, and I did not want to stop learning. Besides being driven by my parents to get a good education and eventually a degree, I was driven by curiosity to find out how things in life work and why our life is the way it is.

He is a hard-working practising physiotherapist and I always hear very good feedback from his patients. This book is a very useful way to help patients understand their musculoskeletal conditions, lose their fear of pain and speed up recovery. I would also recommend this book to other medical practitioners, including family doctors, occu- pational therapists and clinical psychologists.’ Dr Paul Angel Principal of Scarborough Majellan Medical Centre FR ACGP, PhD ‘As an experienced GP I have met and treated many thousands of people who suffer from all types of pain, from mild to extremely severe. I have seen the way in which chronic pain impacts on my patients’ lives, and stops them from doing the things they love. Having known Nick for more than ten years and referring countless patients to him, I can definitely say that he knows how to help people to overcome their pain. If you want to understand more about how to achieve relief from pain, please read this book.’ Dr Kimberley Bondeson GP, Beach Medical Clinic, Margate ‘As a rheumatologist, many of my patients have complicated health conditions with a variable impact on their pain levels. It is important to understand that overall health and pain perception are inextricably linked. This book gives you clear and easy to understand explanations about pain and how health conditions can affect it, offering great help on the pathway to wellbeing.’ Dr Claire Barrett Rheumatologist, Redcliffe ‘As a workplace wellness professional, I regularly witness the negative impacts of an increasingly sedentary lifestyle on both employee well- being and workplace productivity.

  • Zen Questions: Zazen, Dogen, and the Spirit of Creative Inquiry
Zen Questions Cover v2:Layout 1 10/19/11 4:22 PM Page 1 Zen continuously questions— not merely looking for answers but rather remaining present Zen Questions and upright in the middle of creative inquiry. “Zen Questions does not have the answers—which is just as it should be because it captures the very process of constructive questioning at its best. Yet in a deeper sense, this book does have answers, as thoughtful readers may discover and match their questions to this brilliant text.” - Z e n —Steven Heine, author of Did Dogen Go to China? “Zen Questions is a series of lucid, held-open investigations into something very simple, but also subtle and complex: the fundamental question of how we inhabit this particular moment of human awareness, in this very body and mind, in this very world. The Zen awareness presented here reaches in many directions—Leighton shows how the understandings of Zen teachers over thirteen hundred years glimmer also in a line by Bob Dylan, a phrase from a poem by Wallace Stevens. Sometimes scholarly and historical, sometimes engaged with the most contemporary of our shared societal dilemmas, Zen Questions equally introduces and expands our American understanding of Buddhist teachings, and of the many possibilities in navigating our own lives.” —Jane Hirshfield, author of Nine Gates: Entering the Mind of Poetry Q u e s t i o n s “A brave book, bringing the fierce spirit of Zen into the questions that all of us face today.” —Roshi Joan Halifax, author of Being with Dying “Taigen Leighton has long been writing about Do-gen with clarity and depth—yet here he Z D also includes his wide-ranging perspectives on Dharma, society, and Bob Dylan to boot.

With the benefit of hindsight, I’m not sure, but when I went to university to study philosophy and theology, that did seem a possible path in life. In the event and in the course of those three years as an undergraduate, the philosophy simply ate up all the theology. My philosophy tutor was an electrifying lecturer, often talked about as the cleverest man in Oxford, and I see now he was a sort of outrider for the New Atheism. Anglo-American philosophy was fiercely and narrowly analytical and technical in those days.
