Latin spelling and pronunciation 1 Latin spelling and pronunciation Latin spelling or orthography refers to the spelling of Latin words written in the scripts of all historical phases of Latin, from Old Latin to the present. All scripts use the same alphabet, but conventional spellings may vary from phase to phase. The Roman alphabet, or Latin alphabet, was adapted from the Old Italic alphabet to represent the phonemes of the Latin language. The Old Italic alphabet had in turn been borrowed from the Greek alphabet, itself adapted from the Phoenician alphabet. Latin pronunciation continually evolved over the centuries, making it difficult for speakers in one era to know how Latin was spoken in prior eras. A given phoneme may be represented by different letters in different periods. This article deals primarily with modern scholarship's best reconstruction of Classical Latin's phonemes (phonology) and the pronunciation and spelling used by educated people in the late Ancient Roman inscription in Roman square capitals. The words are separated by Republic, and then touches upon later engraved dots, a common but by no means universal practice, and long vowels are changes and other variants. marked by apices. Letters and phonemes In Latin spelling, individual letters mostly corresponded to individual phonemes, with three main exceptions: 1. Introduction This report describes the format of data included in the distribution of the National Software Reference Library (NSRL) Reference Data Set (RDS). The NSRL is a repository of commercial- off-the-shelf (COTS) software. The RDS consists of file profiles made up of file identifying information and hash values from the individual files provided in a software package’s installation media. An extract of the NSRL database is produced periodically and made available through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s (DoC) National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Database program as NIST Special Database #28. (See “Physical Distribution Media.”) As software is received in the NSRL, it is processed on a production machine that runs programs to compute a file signature, or hash value, for each file within the installation media. -

Kleene is a programming language that can be used to create many useful and efficient linguistic applications based on finite-state machines (FSMs). These applications include tokenizers, spelling checkers, spelling correc- tors, morphological analyzer/generators and shallow parsers. FSMs are also widely used in speech synthesis and speech recognition. Kleene allows programmers to define, build, manipulate and test finite- state machines using regular expressions and right-linear phrase-structure grammars; and Kleene supports variables, rule-like expressions, user-defined functions and familiar programming-language control syntax. The FSMs can include acceptors and two-projection transducers, either weighted un- der the Tropical Semiring or unweighted. If this makes no sense, the pur- pose of the book is to explain it. Pre-edited Kleene scripts can be run from the command line, and a graphical user interface is provided for interactive learning, programming and testing. Operating Systems Kleene runs on OS X and Linux, requiring Java version 1.5 or higher. GREETINGS FROM IOWA CITY A Letter from IWP Director Christopher Merrill. 2 The 40th session of the International Writing for writing and fellowship. Since then, the IWP Program (IWP) marked an extraordinary milestone has hosted nearly 1100 writers from more than in our program’s history. This fall, the IWP hosted 120 countries, making ours the oldest and largest forty writers from twenty-seven countries, who residency of its kind.
