This is the second Shakespeare- themed production in our season, and we are blessed with the cast and creative team that have assembled to bring it to life for you. Our director and designers are all making long-overdue debuts at the Belfry. Peter Hinton is one of this country’s most respected directors. He is a master working at the height of his talent. His sensitive and innovative produc- tions have been seen at the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, and he is the former Artistic Director of the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. In that position, Peter was a good friend to the Belfry, assisting us with the development of The Life Inside, bringing our tours of The Year of Magical Thinking and Big Mama! to the NAC, and commissioning and co-producing And Slowly Beauty… In fact, it was through that production that Peter became familiar with Brooke Maxwell’s music, and invited him to compose the score for A Tender Thing. Our designers Christina Poddubiuk and Robert Thomson come to us with a wealth of talent, and extensive experience at all of the major theatres in this country. And then there are our Romeo and Juliet: Peter Anderson and Clare Coulter, two of Canada’s leading actors, renowned for their unique qualities and astonishing performances. Clare is a Toronto legend – closely associated with the Tarragon Theatre for many years, and an acclaimed interpreter of Wallace Shawn’s writing. Her most recent – and riveting – perfor- mance was as King Lear in Toronto. Peter is a BC legend – an actor and playwright – best known for his remarkable performances across Canada and around the globe in The Overcoat. He was also one of the creators of The Number 14 and a frequent creative force at the Caravan Farm Theatre in Armstrong, BC. His physical prowess has previously been seen at the Belfry in Flying Blind and The Number 14. It seems impossible, but these two seasoned artists are working together for the first time, in this most intimate of plays, sharing their talent and their open and generous hearts with all of you. Only through such honesty can a play of this nature be truly realized, filled as it is with love and loss. I am thrilled to share it with you. Sharing a good long life is a precious thing. 3050 Nanaimo Street, Victoria, BC Ph: (250) 386-5542 • Fx: (250) 386-7838 [email protected] www.hillsideprinting.com Newport Realty MELINA BOUCHER Providing a complimentary marketing package. Thus vainly thinking that she thinks me young, Although she knows my days are past the best, Simply I credit her false speaking tongue On both sides thus is simple truth supressed. But wherefore says she not she is unjust? And wherefore say not I that I am old? O love’s best habit is in seeming trust, And age in love loves not to have years told. Therefore I lie with her, and she with me, And in our faults by lies we flattered be.” William Shakespeare; The Passionate Pilgrim. I am a passionate pilgrim – travelling far from home in search of the meanings that lie between love and death. Each time we sit down to witness the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, we think, “this time they will survive. This time love will triumph.” But in the battle of light and dark, of larks and nightingales, we are reminded that ultimately love is never about the outcome… its value always lies in the measure of what it attempts. It is never too late. Words are like eggs, once broken – impossible things to repair.

  • Review Dean’S Message
SCHOOL OF BUSINESS YEAR IN REVIEW DEAN’S MESSAGE QSB’s Year in Review is more than just a chance to look back on the highlights of the previous 12 months. Each year since 2007, we have also shared details of financial support for the school, as well as donor vignettes that highlight the power of alumni giving. The 2013-2014 Year in Review includes another strong list of accomplishments to reflect on. You will also see that we have entered the final phase of our fundraising campaign. Thanks to the generosity of QSB’s alumni and friends, the “Invest in QSB” campaign has now reached $51 million of its goal of $65 million. Funds raised are being directed toward four strategic priorities: increasing student diversity in the Commerce program; establishing more scholarships for the full-time MBA program; attracting and retaining the best faculty; and further developing innovative teaching methods. I’m particularly excited about this last initiative, which will enable us to revolutionize a traditional teaching tool: the case study. The Living Case initiative was developed in response to a growing student demand for technology-based learning and classroom discussions that focus on current, real-time events, driven by easy and immediate access to information. Living cases build on the latest market developments, drawing on SEC filings, analyst and news reports, social media and company information, to foster an enhanced understanding of strategic and operational decision-making and integration of activities across entire business systems. The Living Case initiative is just one of the ways we are transforming the traditional classroom into a dynamic learning environment to provide our students with unparalleled opportunities.

Our values are playfulness, accessibility, artistic integrity, empathy, mentorship and community Our Story Carousel Theatre for Young People (CTYP) has been creating theatre for young people since 1976. Located on Granville Island in the heart of Vancouver, CTYP is Vancouver’s professional mainstage TYA Company. We are a gathering place for artists, young people and families to embark on a journey where imagination, a dash of magic, and an abundance of play are the recipe for a theatrical adventure that has lasting impact. Our vision: to empower young people through the magic of theatre. Under the vision of Artistic Director Carole Higgins, CTYP stages vibrant stories that engage young people from the beginning of their development and continues to share stories that challenge young people through their formative years, empowering young people to become agents of positive change. Carole’s vision Stages of Play encompasses a full season that celebrates stories that explore rites of passage through our Family Stage at the Waterfront Theatre, explores Shakespeare’s canon through a contemporary lens every summer with our Teen Shakespeare Stage, and explores original Canadian creations for our BEE Stage. Young People are not simply audience members at CTYP; they are active participants at the very centre of all that we do.

  • Year in Review Dean’S Message
SCHOOL OF BUSINESS YEAR IN REVIEW DEAN’S MESSAGE The pages of this issue reveal many milestones reached at Queen’s If you were not able to join us in School of Business in 2011-2012: steady growth in the Commerce program (increased access to one of Canada’s most coveted Kingston for our recent Reunion Weekend degrees); the launch of QUAAF, a student-run hedge fund (first (September 14 – 16), I encourage you of its kind in Canada); a growing thought leadership presence to check out the 75,000-square-foot resulting from increased faculty research; and more opportunities for our students to participate in international exchanges. Two other expansion of Goodes Hall on our webcam milestones, or cornerstones, if you will, stand out for me this year: at www.goodeshallexpansion.com. opening two facilities that greatly enlarge QSB’s footprint—the west wing of Goodes Hall and a new Toronto facility. If you were not able to join us in Kingston for our recent Reunion Weekend (September 14–16), I encourage you to check out the 75,000-square-foot expansion of Goodes Hall on our webcam at www.goodeshallexpansion.com. At the official opening, QSB faculty and staff, along with university officials, welcomed several classes celebrating reunions, as well as many other alumni and the generous benefactors who made the expansion possible. Earlier this summer, we also opened our new facility in Toronto’s financial district. This 8,400-square- foot space provides a state-of-the-art location for QSB Executive Education and Toronto-based MBA programs (the Accelerated, Cornell-Queen’s Executive and Executive MBAs).
