• Aksaray Sultanhan Caravanserai: a Study of Cultural Interactions and Sustainability Along the Silk Road
Archi-Cultural Translations through the Silk Road 506 2nd International Conference, Mukogawa Women’s Univ., Nishinomiya, Japan, July 14-16, 2012 Proceedings AKSARAY SULTANHAN CARAVANSERAI: A STUDY OF CULTURAL INTERACTIONS AND SUSTAINABILITY ALONG THE SILK ROAD F. Yesim Gurani1, Tulay Ozdemir Canbolat1 1 Cukurova University, Turkey Keywords: Aksaray Sultan Han, han, caravanserais, accommodation, architecture, interior architecture, Seljuk architecture, sustainability, sustainable tourism, Anatolian Seljuk Caravanserais. Introduction As one of the most important trade routes in history, the Silk Road connected the East and West in many ways: economically, socially, culturally and demographically. Societies along the Silk Road not only transmitted their language, traditions, belief systems, arts and artifacts to others, they in turn took elements of those cultures as well. Trade and commerce have been key drivers in these exchanges. As distances were vast, and means of transport were limited to draft animals (mostly camels), trade and travel between cities, regions and territories along the Silk Road could not have been accomplished without the Caravanserais, which acted as resting places for both travelers and their animals. Caravanserais, in other words, were akin to today’s hotels and motels, providing secure venues for accommodation, food, bathing and rest. But they also provided something beyond, and more important, than these: a platform for social and cultural interaction and exchange amongst travelers that happened to be there. Travelers often took time to rest, talk to, and listen to the news and stories of other travelers. This study will examine the role of the Aksaray Sultanhan Caravanserai in this continuous cultural exchange, with a view of its contribution to the transmission of values, traditions, language, arts, know-how and other elements of culture.

  • A Response to the Issue of Dating the Aksaray Zinciriye Madrasah
Online Journal of Art and Design volume 8, issue 3, July 2020 A Response to the Issue of Dating the Aksaray Zinciriye Madrasah H. Abdullah ERDOĞAN1, Barış Mert KARASU1, Aysu AKALIN3 1Konya Technical University, Department of Architecture, Konya, [email protected], Turkey 2Uludağ University, Department of Architecture, Bursa, Turkey 3Gazi University, Department of Architecture, Ankara, Turkey ABSTRACT Although it has no inscription to identify the builder or the construction date on the Aksaray Zinciriye Madrasah, the date of 1337 has been accepted – according to ebced numerical calculations from Ayah inscription – by many historians for a structure constructed during the Karamanids’ Seigniory. Embarking by the doubt that there is no other example of a four-iwan madrasah plan scheme during the Karamanids, this work has been carried out. On the other hand, on the date which madrasah had been claimed to belong, Aksaray was under the auspices of Seigniory of Eretnids. With a view to enlighten this dating dilemma, details of the plans, architectural elements and ornamental features of the madrasah, and the age it belonged to, has been questioned by making a comparison with Seljuk and Karamanid examples. By believing that the ornamental features will act as a guide, the monumental structures in and around Aksaray were reviewed first. Upon finding that the Zinciriye Madrasah’s decorative ornamental features are quite similar to those in Kayseri Karatay Khan (1240–41), Kayseri Sahabiye Madrasah (1267), Aksaray Sultanhanı Caravanserai (1229) and especially the Aksaray Ağzıkarahan Caravanserai (Hoca Mesud Caravanserai) (1231–39), the probability that the structure belonged to the Seljuks not to the Seigniory of Karamanids increased.

Journal of Istanbul Veterınary Scıences Comparison various body measurements of Aksaray Malakli and Kangal Dogs Yusuf Ziya Oğrak1*, Nurşen Öztürk2, Dilara Akın2, Mustafa Özcan2 1 Cumhuriyet University, Veterinary Faculty, Department of Animal Breeding and Husbandry, Research Article Sivas/Turkey. 2 Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa, Veterinary Faculty, Department of Animal Volume: 2, Issue: 3 Breeding and Husbandry, İstanbul/Turkey. December 2018 Pages: 86-91 ABSTRACT This study was conducted to compare and evaluate some body measurements of Kangal Dog and Aksaray Malakli Dog breeds. The study group consist of dogs with an age range from 2 to 5 years. Samples for Kangal dogs were obtained from Sivas and for Aksaray Malakli dogs from Aksaray province. Observations from ten dogs from both species (5 male and 5 female), in total 20 adult dogs were used for this study. Some of the morphological characteristics as black mask around the head, cream fur colour and holding spiral tail were found evident for Kangal dogs while in all Aksaray Malakli dogs the head and body size, thimbleful black mask around the head, and 6th nail existence were determined as descriptive differences between the genotypes. While the effect of gender on muzzle length, body index and bone index was not found to be significant, it was found significant for other body measurements. The rump lengths in male Aksaray Malakli dogs were significantly larger than male Kangal dogs (P<0.001). However, this trait was not significant for female dogs. This can be associated with the significant interaction between breed and gender (P<0.01). Body index also showed the same trend.
