Governor's Proclamation WHEREAS, born August 15, 1925, in Dalzell, South Carolina, Bill Pinkney is a legendary performer and dedicated humanitarian whose strong roots encompass a deep and abiding love of God and country; and WHEREAS, entertaining and delighting audiences of all ages for more than fifty years as a founder of “The Drifters,” Bill Pinkney has also earned distinction as a soldier during World War II, an outstanding player with the Blue Socks Baseball Team, a gospel singer, and a tireless worker for the benefit of others; and WHEREAS, Bill Pinkney’s numerous awards and recognitions, including induction into the Rock and Roll, the South Carolina Rhythm and Blues/Beach Music, and the Vocal Group Halls of Fame, the receipt of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation Pioneer Award, commendations from government officials and industry leaders, and a park named for him in his home town of Dalzell, South Carolina, are a testament to the incredible contributions he has made; and WHEREAS, as an ambassador of good will and music from the Palmetto State, Bill Pinkney has touched countless lives through his selfless commitment to his faith, his country, his music, and his fellow man. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mark Sanford, Governor of the Great State of South Carolina, do hereby proclaim August 15, 2005, as BILL PINKNEY DAY throughout the state and encourage all South Carolinians to join in the celebration of Bill Pinkney and his exemplary life of dedication as a soldier patriot, gospel vocalist, athlete, and popular music superstar on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The Drifters A Half Century of Classic American Music There's a very good reason that Rolling Stone magazine, in their iconic issue "500 Greatest Rock and Roll Performers" said of the Drifters "No group has done it this well for this long--no one, not even the Rolling Stones." That's quite a accolade to live up to but hopefully, on their latest tour, the Drifters will once again prove Rolling Stone to be the sage of rock and roll. Because, once again, the Drifters are on tour with a lineup of super talent revolving around performers who have had between them, over a century of making and recording the most meaningful songs in Rock and Roll. Through their historic journey which began in the 1957, the Drifters have had no less than 5 legendary lead singers including Rock and Roll hall of Famers Clyde McPhatter and Ben E. King. Such stalwart and famed individual lead singers as Charley Thomas, Bill Pinkney and Johnny Moore have passed through the group over the years, each recording their share of Drifters hits. And today, as has been the case for nearly 25 years, their star lead singer is Jerome Jackson who also performed as the lead singer for the Main Ingredient in the 1970s. There are many "firsts" for the Drifters; they were the first group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with fellow inductees The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Bob Dylan and the Supremes. Just reflect for a moment if you will, on that class of Rock and Roll stars that the Drifters were an integral part of. -

Music is functional as a transmitter of messages and ideas. Music is meaningful as a ritual and serves as a form of community maintenance. Sacred music in particular was crucial in maintaining culture because it was often through religion that enslaved Africans were able to practice modified African rituals under the guise of Christianity. Black American sacred music has historically been a medium that has functioned as an outlet for the frustration against the dominant ideology of racial oppression in the United States. -

If instrumen- tal accompaniment was added, it was very much in the background so as not to detract from the voices. The term “doo-wop” itself derives from the ad-lib syllables used while singing the harmony parts. The origins of doo-wop are traceable to nineteenth-century barbershop singing and to the music of such flagship groups as the Ink Spots in the 1930s and the Orioles in the late 1940s. The Orioles were one of the first prominent doo-wop groups, demonstrating their sound in 1948 with the #1 hit “It’s Too Soon to Know.” From 1948 to 1954, they recorded over 120 sides, hitting the charts with memorable songs such as “Crying in the Chapel” (1953). In the mid-1950s The Castelles and The Penguins innovated new doo-wop styles, most famously up-tempo doo-wop. The Penguins’ “Earth Angel” (recorded in 1954) is an excel- lent example of the matured popular doo-wop sound. The song “Get a Job” by The Silhouettes (that hit #1 in 1958) is arguably the most successful doo-wop song of all time. This song inspired the early Motown release of The Miracles’ “Got a Job” in the same year.
