8 Visitors Information Local Attractions

Colorado National Monument One of the area’s biggest outdoor highlights – and we mean big – is the Colorado National Monument, a U.S. National Park. Here sheer-walled canyons, towering red sandstone monoliths and beautiful valleys host a myriad of wild animals and adven- tures for everyone in the family. Spectacular plateaus and canyons fill the park, where the land has been preserved as it was for thousands of years. A visitor center four miles up from the West entrance offers camping information and more.

Downtown Grand Junction Charming, safe and booming with local businesses, the streets of downtown Grand Junction are filled with art galleries, clothing boutiques, antique shops and a variety of restaurants – many with delightful sidewalk dining. Downtown has retained the quaint charm of yesteryear, thanks to its Victorian-era architecture and a calendar full of free, old-fashioned community events like the Farmers’ Market Festival and the Parade of Lights. The streets of downtown Grand Junction are one of the nation’s largest sidewalk sculpture galleries and are filled with almost 100 sculptures. Late- night entertainment is also in full swing. With great coffeehouses featuring live music and dance clubs, too, downtown Grand Junction is bustling with activity, history and fun both day and night.

Dinosaurs Grand Junction is dinosaur country – a place where you can find real dinosaur bones, go on digs, visit dinosaur museums and more. Combining two great Grand Junction pastimes – dinosaurs and hiking – is the Trail Through Time hike, a 1.5-mile inter- pretive trail where you can view the fossils of 140-million-year-old dinosaurs at a working fossil quarry. There is also an interpretive kiosk that describes the dinosaurs that have come from this area. Adding to the fun is a visit to The Dinosaur Journey, a hands-on, interactive museum featuring robotic displays and real bones found in Colorado, not to mention full-size cast skeletons.

Museums Come and learn about Grand Junction and Western Colorado at The Museum of Western Colorado. Discover prehistoric pottery, Navajo rugs and rock art panes. Let the kids watch history come alive while experiencing the Old West at the Pastime Saloon. Climb into a full-size stagecoach and take an interactive ride, or view a collec- tion of recently restored 19th century saddles on display.
