EXPERIENCE PHILOSOPHY The vision expressed over four decades The lasting solution to homelessness ago by our founders still rings true is housing. We provide the most today — every person deserves a life vulnerable members of society with of dignity & a safe place to call home. housing, along with the support they need to stay housed and reintegrate into their communities. LETTER FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR Dear Friends,

It is difficult for most of us to imagine the pain of losing our home, or our livelihood. While our hearts go out to those suffering these losses, the challenge of solving homelessness seems overwhelming for any one of us to be able to address individually.

To assist an individual or family to end the cycle of homelessness, we need to be able to offer them more than just a meal or a temporary bed – we need to offer them housing first, followed by assistance with the underlying cause of their homelessness, and assistance with finding employment – this is proven to be the most viable model for ending homelessness, one person or family at a time.

How can we do that as individuals? Together we can support organizations like Union Station Homeless Services that are equipped to provide life-changing services. While there is some government funding for a portion of these efforts, those funds do not cover the full cost of providing the quality services that are needed for success.

Union Station could not provide the excellent services we do without the support of and partnership with our community, donors, and supporters – all of you! You are an incredibly important part of what we are able to do, and we could not do it without you.

There is significant and growing need for our services in our neighborhoods, making your assistance even more vital today. Your voice behind efforts to expand housing alternatives is also critical – without affordable housing, it is difficult to address homelessness successfully.

I feel incredibly honored to be your Board Chair for this fabulous organization! I continue to be amazed by the quality and dedication of the Union Station staff and their caring hearts for our clients. We were fortunate to be able to recruit Anne Miskey as our new CEO this year to lead the organization forward. I want to thank Anne and the wonderful leadership team for the great partnership they have with our board.

Most of all I want to thank you, our supporters, donors, and volunteers! We could not achieve what we have done, or will do in the future, without your dedication and continued support.

If you would like tangible evidence of the results of your support, I would encourage you to go to our website and watch the video testimonials from a few of our graduates.* You will find them to be an inspiring demonstration of the vital work done by Union Station Homeless Services every day.

Gratefully,

Jim Moore Board Chair, 2018

PAGE 4 www.unionstationhs.org | 626.240.4550 LETTER FROM OUR CEO Dear Friends,

To use the words of Charles Dickens, 2018 was, in many ways, “the best of times, and the worst of times.” Sadly, we watched as the issue of homelessness grew ever more visible throughout County. The increasing costs of rents, the lack of affordable and supportive housing, and the stagnant wages throughout our region have created a perfect storm, in which too many of our neighbors are drowning. But we cannot let these facts weigh us down, or turn us from our goal – because there is good news, and there is hope as Union Station Homeless Services, our staff, volunteers, donors and clients continue to work to permanently end homelessness for every man, woman and child in our region.

Over the past year we have witnessed lives changing and hope returning to many people. We have been privileged to walk beside and support those who are experiencing homelessness and those we have helped move on to housing and stability. Seeing the incredible resilience of people is not only heartwarming, it confirms that, no matter what their situation, we must never give up trying to make a difference in people’s lives.

We did not give up on Chris, who, after years on the streets, finally moved into permanent housing. And yet he continued to be alone – “never looking to anyone for anything.” But this year we helped Chris join our Mentor program. Just recently he spoke to our board of directors and told them that, “for the first time I know what it is to have a friend.” And now, because of the support of his friend and mentor Fred, Chris is enrolled in a public speaking course to learn how to advocate in order to help end homelessness for others. He is no longer homeless, and he is no longer alone.

We did not give up on Jacqueline, a 65 year old woman who spent the last five years living on the streets. She lost her home of 35 years when it was sold and she was forced to move. She was sleeping in a tent on the street and had given up hope when she met one of our outreach workers. As a result, today she is living and thriving in a beautiful one bedroom bungalow. She volunteers her time and her resources, raising awareness and helping improve the quality of life of those living in her community. Jacqueline is home.

We did not give up on Kimberly and her family, who were homeless. They were finally sheltered at our Family Center. During their time there both parents were able to obtain employment and our staff helped them improve their credit rating so that they would be eligible for a new apartment. They are now permanently housed and doing well.

While 2018 has been a difficult year for many, and a time of further transition at Union Station, I am so proud to be part of this amazing organization. With the support of a strong leadership team, a committed and engaged board of directors – and the passion, commitment and support of our donors and volunteers – we continue to grow and reach even more people throughout Pasadena and San Gabriel Valley.

In 2019, we will keep working tirelessly and always with compassion to help those experiencing homelessness and those we have helped house. Our focus will be on permanent solutions for people – from housing and services, to our community allies program, to increasing our efforts around job training and employment.

Together let us make 2019 “the best of times” by permanently ending homelessness for as many people as we can. Thank you for all you do to support Union Station Homeless Services and the people we serve.

Warm Regards,

Anne Miskey Chief Executive Officer

Union Station Homeless Services leads the delivery of homeless and housing services throughout the San Gabriel Valley. In collaboration with dozens of partner agencies and organizations in the region, we are working to help end homelessness.

Our field-based outreach teams locate and assess people who are experiencing homelessness throughout the San Gabriel Valley. They build trust and help people on their journey to finding safe and affordable housing.

Our outreach teams for adults and families include: • Coordinated Entry System (CES): Streamlines the process of finding housing for those individuals who are homeless — with the goal of housing the most vulnerable people first. • Family Coordinated Entry System: This is the primary point of entry for families seeking services who are experiencing or at-risk of becoming homeless. • Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT): Outreach teams consist of care coordinators, nurses, substance use counselors, mental health clinicians, and formerly homeless peer advocates.

“We meet people at their most vulnerable. We develop trust and real relationships which help us to reach more people that otherwise might not be reached.”

— Sean Davis, Housing Navigator Sean In the streets of Monrovia SHELTER

We offer safe bridge housing for adults and families. Our residents meet at least weekly with a care coordinator and aim to move into permanent housing within 90 days. Our residents have access to meals, supportive services, medical and mental healthcare, substance use recovery programs, career development classes, and enrichment activities to help them rebuild their lives. We also provide motel vouchers for adults and families as a short term solution.

Our bridge housing include: • The Adult Center, 56 beds for adults • The Family Center, 50 beds or parents and children • Motel vouchers provide additional crisis and bridge housing opportunities.

HERNANDEZ FAMILY Not too long ago, Jorge* and his wife Sophia* were your typical family, with two young children, Marcos* (4) and William* (1). Jorge worked hard to support his family but when he suffered a work accident, his general contracting business collapsed, making Jorge feel like his world was turned upside down.

No longer able to pay the rent, the family was evicted from their home without a place to go. With mounting debts and no relatives or friends to turn to, the family’s only choice was to live in their car with their belongings and the pet dog. Jorge struggled to provide even the basics for his family like food, or gas to drive the children to school. Things were getting harder and harder and Jorge was losing all hope.

In blind desperation with nowhere to turn, Jorge was feeling worthless and ashamed when someone referred him to Union Station Homeless Services for help. To Jorge’s relief, we were immediately able to house them temporarily at our Family Shelter, while also searching for a permanent home for the whole family.

Being connected to Union Station was Jorge’s first step to getting his confidence back. We helped him enroll the children in a local school, and with support from our amazing housing navigators, he found his Jorge & Sophia’s Family family a permanent home so they could all live together Former clients of Union Station’s Family Center and start building a new life.

Our team was able to focus on improving the emotional, physical and mental well-being of the whole family to help them overcome the trauma of their homelessness and start smiling again.

We’re excited to report that the family is now happily living under the same roof. We are continuing to support Jorge to get back on track and re-establish his own business so the family can regain their independence, plan a positive future, and rebuild their loving home.

CHARLIE Born in downtown LA, Charlie had a relatively normal childhood and loved the beach, surfing, and skating. However, after his mother passed away, Charlie wandered the US and had odd jobs here and there, never really settling into one location. Charlie eventually settled down and got married, but that ended quickly. After remarrying and getting a second divorce, Charlie found himself struggling financially, having relied on the second income of his ex-spouse, due to a serious illness that caused him unexpected seizures.

He found himself homeless shortly afterwards, even with a job at a local fine dining establishment. “Homelessness used to be a paycheck away. Now even someone Charlie with a job can end up homeless.” at his new home

Charlie quickly realized that it was nearly impossible to maintain employment without having stable housing and soon thereafter lost his employment. As an avid videographer, Charlie started documenting his journey through homelessness on a “We need housing daily basis. He tried getting housing on his own, but soon realized that the process was extensive and exhausting. Even with no history of drug or alcohol usage, now. Union Station Homeless Services is proud to be the lead agency coordinating homeless services in the San Gabriel Valley. Our strategic growth is bolstered by LA County voter’s commitment to end homelessness via passage of Measure H. We are driven to deliver innovative, client-centered services that focus on best practices, data-driven results, and quality outcomes. Our programming has adapted to serve homeless individuals, veterans, and families with increasingly complex needs including chronic homelessness, chronic health conditions, disabilities, mental illness, and substance abuse.

While government contracts enable us to widen and deepen our impact, we continue to rely heavily on the generosity of our community. Thanks to our donors, we helped thousands of people access housing and supportive services. We also have made important investments in the agency’s capacity this year by hiring more credentialed staff, expanding our offices, and beginning to upgrade our IT infrastructure.

Our most important fiscal commitment has always been to maximize our dollars to have the most impact in the lives of people we serve. We regularly evaluate our processes and practices, and constantly improve and streamline them.

More than 85 Culinary, Beverage and Sweet Masters provided delicious tastings for guests as they experienced the Rose Bowl field and supported Union Station Homeless Services.

This event would not be possible without the amazing support from HomeStreet Bank, Judith L. Chiara Foundation, Woodford Reserve, Western Asset, and our community. Over $508,000 was raised in support of our life changing services. Thank you! Photo by: Juan Flores (jflophoto.com) EVENING FOR THE STATION Evening for the Station has a long history of entertaining and raising support for the organization’s life-changing programs.

2017 marked the 18th annual Evening for the Station and Union Station Homeless Services hosted an incredible night of at The Rose in Pasadena to demonstrate that everyone can perform magic by helping to make homelessness disappear.

With over 350 community, business and civic leaders in attendance, the event featured a talented lineup of top magicians from the famed Hollywood . It was truly a night of magic!

Photo by: Mario Galeano DINNER IN THE PARK The best way to give thanks is to give back! This past Thanksgiving, Union Station supporters showed community spirit and compassion to those in need! Hundreds of volunteers of all ages gathered together on Thanksgiving to serve meals and cheer at Union Stations’ 48th annual Dinner in the Park. Over 2,000 meals were served to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or poverty, senior citizens, and those who were alone for Thanksgiving or unable to afford a holiday meal.

Special thanks to our main sponsor Tsutayo Ichioka & Satsuki Nakao Foundation, as well to as Citizen’s Business Bank, Individual Food Service, Goldstar and Centerplate, who make this event possible! We would also like to thank our amazing community members, who donated their time and purchased items from our wish list! Photo by: Austin Sosa (sosaphoto.com)
