    Removal of Stock Parts (Impingement System): 1. Remove the upper receiver from the lower receiver. 2. Remove the bolt carrier and charging handle from the receiver. 3. Remove the bolt from the carrier. 4. Remove the gas rings from the bolt using a thin flat edge. Set the bolt and bolt carrier aside for later installation steps. 5. Remove the top and bottom handguards from the barrel by pulling back on the delta ring and pulling the handguards apart. If you don’t have standard handguards, remove any handguard(s) that might be on the rifle. 6. Use a 3/4” wrench to remove the flash suppresser or muzzle break along with the crush washer from the barrel. 7. Use a 1/8” hardened punch and a hammer to drive out the front sight pins that hold the sight assembly in place. Some rifles will have tapered pins. Check both sides of the pins to determine if one side is larger than the other and drive out from the side that is the smallest. Once both pins are removed, remove the sight assembly/gas block and gas tube from the barrel by slightly twisting the assembly from side to side as you pull it forward off the barrel. You can use a soft mallet (e.g. rubber, plastic, or brass) to tap the assembly off, if needed. 8.     By David Crane Photos courtesy U.S. Army olt’s M4 carbine came in dead last in an “Extreme Dust Test” (EDT) con- ducted in the fall of 2007 that pitted the current-issue carbine against the FN’s Mk16 (SCAR-Light), HK’s 416, and HK’s XM8. The impetus for the test, the second dust test con- ducted on the M4 in the same year (2007), was CSen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), who believed that more reliable assault rifles and carbines than the M4 existed and should be compared to the M4 before the U.S. Army issued an approxi- mately $375-million sole-source procurement contract to Colt. In April 2007, Sen. Coburn stated in a letter, “I am concerned with the Army’s plans to procure nearly half a million new rifles outside of any competitive process.” So, Coburn asked that the Army hold a “…free and open competition.” Accordingly, the U.S. Army Test and Evalu- ation Center (ATEC) team tested 10 sample guns of each weapon system, 40 guns total, and exposed them all to 25 hours of “dusting.” Dust testing consisted of each rifle getting a heavy dose of lubricant, the muzzle being capped, and the ejection port cover closed. Then, each weapon was exposed to a heavy dust environment in a dust chamber for 30 minutes. After the dust bath, a tester fired 120 rounds through each weapon. Chambered in the same 7.62x39, the rifle was designed with a number of changes over the standard Type 81 to support its role. A thicker and longer chrome lined barrel was added for better retained accuracy during high volume firing, a folding bi-pod was attached to the barrel for firing support and the front sight was moved to the end of the barrel to provide a longer sight radius for added precision. A top mounted carrying handle was mounted to the rear sight post and the rear stock changed to “club foot” style to allow the user to fire from the prone position more comfortably. Supplied with two 5/30 magazines, with sling and drum magazines available as optional accessories. All parts and components are new production. Non-restricted. Priced at just $1499.
