Steve Tracy has been insistent that I pro- duce a structurally-sound dissertation, and his excitement about my project has been particularly motivating. Mi- chelle Stephens not only helped me further complicate my work, but her suggestion that I construct and utilize ter- minology that illuminates, not undermines, my thesis was immeasurable and led to what I am delighted to refer to as "transnational black American." Lastly, Paula Giddings helped transform my dissertation from a comparative to an intersect ional project, which took my work into newer tra- jectories, and has always challenged and encouraged me to further conceptualize and articulate my dissertation's com- plexity and efficacy. Smethurst Transnational black American women writers' literary renderings of "home" evidence an intersect ional relation- ship among black American literature and cultures. This dissertation analyzes, through the trope of home, these au- thors' portrayals of the multiplicity of experiences in- forming black American women's lives and identities both domestically and transnat ional ly. Embracing the transna- tional ism of black American female subjects, as well as a paradigm of intersect ional i ty , this dissertation creates a framework that challenges not only canon formation with re- gards to black women's literature in the Americas, but also the rigidity surrounding rac i a 1 /ethn i c and national identi- ties generally. To this end, it distinguishes itself from other scholarship that has largely analyzed these women's ix writings comparatively or within a larger diasporic frame- work—which, while insightful, tends to undermine the im- pact and specificity of "New World" or black American cul- tures . This dissertation consists of an Introduction that de- lineates " intersect ional i ty, " explicating its significance and relational aspects to what I refer to as "transnational black American." Chapter I analyzes how these black women writers' representations of home problematize "nation"; and, it situates the novels within particular historical, sociopolitical, gendered, and literary contexts. Chapter II investigates Paule Marshall's depictions of African American and Caribbean settings as homespaces integral to protagonist Avey Johnson's black cultural consciousness and healing in Praisesong for the Widow.

By examining fictionalized autoethnographies—narratives wherein the author writes to represent his or her own ethnic group as a collective identity in crisis—this dissertation interrogates audiences‘ responses and authors‘ impetus for reading and producing novels that testify to experiences of cultural trauma. The first chapter synthesizes some critical strategies specific to autoethnographic fiction; the final three chapters posit a series of textual applications of those strategies. Each textual application demonstrates that outsider readers and critics can treat testimonial literatures with respect and compassion while still analyzing them critically. In the second chapter, an explication of the representations of African American women‘s experiences with the cultural trauma of slavery is brought to bear upon analyses of Toni Morrison‘s A Mercy (2009) and Alice Walker‘s Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart (2003).

In The Chosen Place, The Timeless People, she concentrates on history, culture and myth. She reveals events on a human, historic, and cultural continuum that evokes a time past in time present. This study attempts to examine poetics of prophecy in Paule Marshall’s novels. KEYWORDS: Paule Marshall, poetics of prophecy, Colonialism, Time, Culture, History. INTRODUCTION Then she remembered the two silver bangles she had always worn. She pushed up her coat sleeve and stretched one until it passed over her wrist, and, without turning, hurled it high over her shoulder. The bangle rose behind her, a bit of silver against the moon, then curved swiftly downward and struck a stone. A frail sound in that utter silence (Marshall 1959:255). With these lines concludes Paule Marshall's first novel Brown Girl, Brownstones and we are immediately brought into the world of ontological transmutation of the black woman's existential conditions in America. Selina's symbolic act of tossing the bangle high into the air and abandoning the Chauncey Street tenements and brownstone houses, where she grew up, is in itself a testimony to Marshall's prophetic vision that announced that the black woman in America was no more a mule of the world (Hurston 1938:29) carrying the burden heaped on her back but a radiant female hero.

    Learning from Feed the Future Programs about Gender Integration and Women’s Empowerment COMPILED CASE SUBMISSIONS APRIL 2016 Learning from Feed the Future Programs about Gender Integration and Women’s Empowerment Compiled Case Submissions April 2016 The case studies in the following pages were solicited from Feed the Future partners through a Call for Cases about Feed the Future Learning on Gender Integration and Women’s Empowerment, released in April 2016.1 Feed the Future partners submitted twenty cases spanning ten different countries. The cases were ranked and chosen according to the quality of the data, the compelling nature of the story, demonstration of learning, and diversity of representation in terms of geography and type of intervention. While the majority of information in the Cultivating Women’s Empowerment: Stories from Feed the Future 2011-2015 came from these twenty cases, it was not possible to include everything. In the spirit of learning and transparency, all of the original case submissions are compiled here and are available for download on USAID’s Agrilinks website. They are a complimentary piece to the publication and showcase the broader set of activities happening around gender integration and women’s empowerment in Feed the Future programs. For Danticat, the ‘ideal homeland’ is a psychic space where she can be Haitian, American, and belong to both countries. Danticat’s aspiration and position as one who can make claim to both Haiti and the United States somewhat supports Stuart Hall’s notion of cultural identity as a fluid entity and an identity that is becoming and is, not one that is static and was. However, Danticat locates her ‘ideal homeland’ within the Haitian Dyaspora, as a social construct that includes all the people of the Haitian descent in the diaspora, whatever their countries of citizenship. This ideal homeland is an emotional and literary space for continued expression and creation of Haitian identity, history and culture. It is not a geographical space and as such, requires that membership in it engage through text. This paper investigates ways in which Danticat expresses the ideal homeland in her fiction and nonfiction works. I use Dionne Brand, Kamau Brathwaite, Edward Soja and Judith Lewis Herman among others, as theorists to discover this ideal homeland in order to show that Danticat, like many diasporic writers, is actively engaged in locating for themselves where they can engage in their work as they create new communities and take charge of how they tell their stories and how they identify themselves.
