What Do You Know About Wrestling? What Do You Know About Wrestling? Ask anyone what wrestling is and they will be able to answer. This sport is a worldwide phenomenon with millions of fans. However, not so many people know how wrestling was born and where it comes from. Professional wrestling, pro wrestling, or simply wrestling is actually a form of performance art and entertainment. It combines theatrical performance with athletics. Wrestling usually takes the form of events that are organized by touring companies, mimicking a title-match combat sport. Wrestling is a billion-dollar entertainment industry. In the 1980s, local forms of wrestling declined very much in Europe, while in North America they gained momentum. Later on, the advent of television offered pro wrestling a new opening. Where does it come from? This unique form of sport which is displayed is based on, as well as evolved from, classical and catch wrestling, alongside modern additions such as strength-based holds and throws, acrobatic maneuvers, and striking attacks. Most of these additions originate in various international martial arts. To make things even more spectacular, improvised weaponry may sometimes be included in a fight. Wrestling originates in a popular form of entertainment from the 19th-century Europe. Later, it grew into sideshow exhibitions in North American traveling as well as vaudeville halls. It was not long before professional wrestling grew into a standalone style of entertainment with numerous variations in cultures around the world. Wrestling and boxing soon became instrumental in making pay-per-view a great method of content delivery. Show wrestling has become very popular, especially in Central and North America, Europe, particularly the UK, and Japan. Profits The revenue for professional wrestling comes from ticket sales, pay-per-view broadcasts, home video, network television broadcasts, and branded merchandise. Annual pro wrestling events like WrestleMania, Wrestle Kingdom, or Bound for Glory are some of the highest-selling pay-per-view events every year. Today, internet programming has been used by various companies in order to air web shows, on-demand content, and internet pay-per-view. These resources help produce internet-related revenue profits from the continuously-evolving World Wide Web. There are also the home video sales that dominate the Billboard charts of Recreational Sports DVD sales, and wrestling is holding between three to nine of the top ten spots weekly. Wrestling and art Given its persistent cultural presence, as well as its novelty among the performing arts, professional wrestling is a recurring subject in both the media and academia. There have been a few documentaries produced about pro wrestling. The most notable ones are Wrestling with Shadows directed by Paul Jay and featuring Bret Hart and Beyond the Mat, which was directed by Barry W. Blaustein. Numerous fictional depictions about wrestling have also been created such as the 2008 film The Wrestler which also received a few Oscar nominations and started a career revival for Mickey Rourke. Rules In the case of professional wrestling, there is no governing authority for rules but there is a general standard that was developed. Even if they are usually similar, each promotion has its own variation. Given the staged nature of wrestling, there are no exact rules. Still, there is a general structure that can be followed. Wrestling matches are held between two or more sides or corners. Each corner has one, two, or a team of more wrestlers. Most team matches are directed by tag team rules, while other matches are free-for-alls with multiple fighters and no teams. In all cases, there is only one winning fighter or team. The conventional method of scoring is the fall. This is accomplished through a few methods. One of them is pinning the rival’s shoulders to the mat, usually for three seconds. Other methods include forcing the adversary to submit, disqualifying the opponent, or knocking out or incapacitating the enemy. Also, if the rival remains outside the ring for too long, the other fighter wins; this is called count-out. The discussion of Samoan identity in the context of sport has examined Maori identity and masculinity in New Zealand, among other topics, but there has yet to be work which considers Samoans within professional wrestling. This research investigates Samoan identity through a content analysis of televised wrestling matches. This research identifies six primary stereotypes under which Samoan identity is portrayed. These portrayals of Samoan characters, I argue, flatten the representation of this ethnic group within wrestling and culture at large. This research investigates the identity of Samoans within professional wrestling, and the different ways they are constructed and presented to audiences. “Gimmicks,” characters portrayed by a wrestler “resulting in the sum of fictional elements, attire and wrestling ability” (Oliva and Calleja 3) utilized by Samoans have run the gamut from the wild uncivilized savage, to the sumo (both in villainous Japanese and comically absurd iterations), to the ultra-cool mogul who wears silk shirts and fancy shoes. Their ability to cut promos, an important facet of the modern gimmick allowing wrestlers to address their opponents and storylines, varies widely as well, but all lie within their Samoan identity.

Cena went for the move and Owens kind of just fell down on his chest; imagine an axe-guillotine driver but with Owens losing his balance too. When the report first broke, people were freaking out about Cena possibly suffering a neck injury, since they did stop the match for the referee to check on Cena and they went right to the finish after he was checked out.

Bush in 2004, political pundits were quick to credit Christian evangelicals with providing the margin of victory over Democratic challenger John Kerry. An article in The New York Times touted presidential adviser Karl Rove as a genius for focusing the attention of his boss upon such “moral” issues as same-sex marriage and abortion, thereby attracting four million evangelicals to the polls who had sat out the 2000 election.1 The emphasis of the Democratic Party upon such matters as jobs in the economically-depressed state of 9a Ohio apparently was trumped by the emotionally-charged issues of gay marriage and abortion, which evangelicals perceived as more threatening to their way of life than an economy in decline. This reading of the election resulted in a series of jeremiads from the political left bemoaning the influence of Christians upon Christian Left: American politics. In an opinion piece for The New York Times, liberal economist Paul Krugman termed President Bush a radical who “wants to break down barriers between church and state.” In his influential book What’s The Matter with Kansas?, Thomas Frank speculated as to why working-class people in Kansas, a state with a progressive tradition, would allow themselves to be manipulated by evangelists and the Republican Party into voting against their own economic interests.

These groups range from alternative right, Neo Confederates, White Supremacist to Odinist prison gangs and anti-Muslim groups. These White Power groups have a particular race-based ideology that can be understood relative to their music—a tool that provides central recruitment and cohesive mechanisms. White supremacist rock, called Hatecore, presents the contemporary version of the legacy of racist music such as Oi! and Rock Against Communism. Through the years, this genre produces an idealized model of white supremacist, while also speaking out against the perceived threats, goals, and attitudes within white supremacist spaces. In this thesis, I use content analysis techniques to attempt to answer two main questions. The first is: What is the ideal type of white supremacist that is explicitly produced in Hatecore music? Secondly, what are the concerns of these bands as they try to frame these within white supremacist spaces? Results show that white supremacist men are lauded as violent and racist, while women must be servile to them. Finally, white supremacist concerns are similar to previous research, but highlight growing hatred toward Islam and Asians.
