Carl Alan Awards 2009 The Oscars of the World of Dance The Carl-Alan Awards were first introduced in 1953 by Eric Morley and were named after the joint Chairmen of Mecca Carl Heimann and Alan Fairley. The International Dance Teachers' Association was proud to present the 2009 Carl Alan Awards on Sunday 1st February, in conjunction with the IDTA President’s Dinner and Dance. The IDTA were pleased that all three sections of the awards were presented: Freestyle Theatre Ballroom, Latin & Sequence There are five categories of awards in each section. Performer's Award Teacher's Award Competitive Coach/Choreography Award Outstanding Services to Dance Award Lifetime Achievement Award All recognised dance associations or societies were invited to make nominations in all categories and each association or society was invited to send a delegate to represent them on each of the selection committees. The IDTA remained independent in the selection process. From the many nominations received, the selection committees were asked to short-list up to three nominees in each category. To be nominated for a Carl Alan Award by your peers reflects the nominee's considerable contribution to the world of dance. IDTA would like to congratulate all the nominees; unfortunately there can only be one winner in each category. The IDTA would like to thank star of screen and stage Mr Lionel Blair for hosting the evening. ~~~o0o~~~ Performer's Award From the many nominations received, the selection committee short-listed the following nominees: Freestyle Performer's Award

Jonathan Skinner Social Dance for Successful Aging ARTICLES Social Dance for Successful Aging The Practice of Health, Happiness, and Social Inclusion Amongst Senior Citizens Jonathan Skinner Department of History and Anthropology Queen’s University Belfast Abstract This article presents findings from a qualitative study of social dancing for successful aging amongst senior citizens in three locales: in Blackpool (GB), around Belfast (NI), and in Sacramento (US). Social dancers are found to navigate an intense space in society, one of wellbeing accompanied by a beneficial sense of youthfulness. Besides such renewal and self-actualisation, findings also attest to the perceived social, psychological and health benefits of social dancing amongst senior citizens. They also articulate three different social dancing practices: social dance as tea dance (Sacramento), social dance as practice dance (Blackpool), social dance as motility (Belfast and environs). Keywords: aging, senior citizen, social dance, ballroom, health, nostalgia, leisure INTRODUCTION “You see, the thing is when you retire you don’t have to live the same kind of life you did before. • How the Waltz Was Won: Part 2
How the Waltz was Won: Transmutations and the Acquisition of Style in Early English Modern Ballroom Dancing Part Two: The Waltz Regained Abstract Part One of this study on the transmutation of the Victorian waltz into the modern English waltz of the early 1920s examined the labile social and choreographic climate of social dancing in London’s fashionable ballrooms before, during and just after World War One. The article ended with the teachers’ unsatisfactory effort to characterise the features of a distinctively modern waltz style in response to a widespread discourse to recover and adapt the dance for the contemporary English ballroom. Part Two investigates the role of club and national competitions and exhibition dancers in changing and stabilising a waltz form and style that integrated preferred aspects of both old and new techniques, as advocated by leading waltz advocate and judge, Philip Richardson. This article brings into critical focus not only choreographic contributions by Victor Silvester and Josephine Bradley but also those of models such as Maurice Mouvet, G. K. Anderson, Georges Fontana, and Marjorie Moss whose direct influence in England outweighed that of the more famous American couple Irene and Vernon Castle. The dance backgrounds, training and inter- connections of these individuals are examined in identifying 1 choreological and aesthetic continuities that relate to prevalent and inter-related notions of style, Englishness, art and modernity as expressed through the dancing. Taken as a whole, the two parts provide a case study of innovative shifts in popular dancing and meaning that are led through imitation and improvisation by practitioners principally from the middle class.

  • Victor Silvester – Strictly from Wembley
Victor Silvester – Strictly from Wembley This is the time of year when many people look forward to watching “Strictly Come Dancing” on a Saturday evening. But “Strictly” may never have happened if it were not for a man born in Wembley! 1. St John's Church and its noticeboard, when Rev. Silvester was its Vicar. (Brent Archives 1197 and 9523) In 1895 John William Potts Silvester, a recently ordained Church of England priest, arrived in Wembley to serve as a curate at St John the Evangelist Church. Because of the ill health of the vicar he came to assist, Silvester became the parish priest a year later, a post he held until 1944. He and his young wife Kate, from Lancashire like her husband, moved into the vicarage in Crawford Avenue, and she was to bear him successively two sons and then four daughters. 2. A postcard of St John's Vicarage, first half of the 20th century. (Brent Archives online image 10605) The eldest son rejoiced in the name of Temple St John Hudson Silvester, being named after the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Frederick Temple, St John’s Church and his mother’s maiden name! Their second son was born in the vicarage on 25 February 1900, and was named Victor. This was probably because of a “victory”, the relief of Kimberley during Britain’s war with the South African Boers, which had been reported in “The Times” the previous day. Victor’s middle name was Marlborough, after another bishop. With all this C of E background, you might think that the Silvester boys were destined for a career in the Church.

Great For International StyleBy CasanFirst, this book on international style will never replace a teacher. If you want to learn international style, give yourself about a year with a private teacher. If you're a couple, figure 2 years. It is impossible to learn to dance from a book. Footsteps show alignment only. Books do not teach technique, and international style is all about technique. If you want to learn to dance socially, take private ballroom dance lessons with a good studio. This book is not for you.A piece of advice, Forget about group lessons. No one learns to dance in a group. This book is very clear and written for someone who knows how to dance.Last, you need to learn amalgamations, i.e., continuity. Learning one step at a time doesn't work. This book will tell you which figure precedes or follows a given figure.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A very good buy!By Ravi M KumarI purchased this book to compliment my dance instruction. Being that I take lessons in Japan, I needed a book, in English, which would reinforce and further explain what was being taught to me in class.
