Christmas Island lies 290 km south of Java (Indonesia) and 1,400 km north-west of Western Australia. It is a small uplifted volcanic island (137 km² in area) and is administered by Western Australia as an External Territory of Australia. The Cocos (Keeling) Islands lie 970 km west of Christmas Island and 2,100 km north-west of Western Australia. They comprise two low-lying atolls, a large southern atoll (Cocos) consisting of about 26 islands around a horseshoe-shaped lagoon and a smaller North Keeling Island lying 25 km to the north. They cover a land area of about 14 km² and are also administered by Western Australia as an External Territory of Australia. Abstract approved: Redacted for Privacy Fredrick Stormshak Prolactin (PRL) is a peptide hormone that is involved in a number of diverse physiologic roles, particularly with respect to reproduction, including: influencing sexual and parental behaviors, onset of puberty, regulation of seasonal reproduction, follicular maturation, ovulation, luteinization and corpus luteum (CL) function, steroidogenesis, mammary gland development and lactation, testicular and spermatozoal function, and immunomodulation of ovarian processes. Little is known about PRL's role in elephant reproduction. The present research was conducted to determine seasonal changes in PRL secretion in non-pregnant female African elephants. A corollary objective was to examine the potential functional interrelationships between secretions of PRL, cortisol and progesterone. Weekly blood samples for 18 months were taken from four female African elephants and the sera were analyzed by radioimmunoassay for progesterone, cortisol, and PRL concentrations. Estrous cycles averaged 14 weeks in length, and estrous cycle synchronicity was evident between pairs of elephants. The luteal phase was defined by serum concentrations of progesterone consistently above 200 pg/ml, and averaged 9 weeks in length (range: 5-12 weeks) with a mean (± SE) concentration of 750.3 ± 171.9 pg/ml. The follicular phase was defined by serum concentrations of progesterone consistently below 200 pg/ml, and averaged 5 weeks in length (range: 4-8 weeks) with a mean concentration of 103.1 ± 17.5 pg/ml. Mean (± SE) serum concentration of cortisol was 5.7 ± 1.3 ng/ml (range: 1.4-19.3 ng/ml), and concentrations of this adrenal steroid were negatively correlated with progesterone concentrations (r = -0.15; p<0.01).

One important foundation for the conservation of biodiversity on islands is an inventory of endemic species. In the absence of a comprehensive inventory, conservation effort often defaults to a focus on the better-known and more conspicuous species (typically mammals and birds). Although this component of island biota often needs such conservation attention, such focus may mean that less conspicuous endemic species (especially invertebrates) are neglected and suffer high rates of loss. In this paper, we review the available literature and online resources to compile a list of endemic species that is as comprehensive as possible for the 137 km2 oceanic Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the north-eastern Indian Ocean.

    An Avifaunal Survey of the Babuyan Islands, Northern Philippines with Notes on Mammals, Reptiles and Amphibians 29 March – 6 June 2004 Final Report by Carl Oliveros Genevieve Broad Carmela Española Marisol Pedregosa Mark Anthony Reyes Harvey John Garcia Juan Carlos Gonzalez Amado Bajarias, Jr. September 2004 Manila, Philippines Preface This project arose out of a desire to assist the Babuyan group of islands to protect their natural resources and wildlife during a time of development and change. The islands are rich in biological diversity and have rapidly become a focus of international interest and importance following the discovery of a humpback whale breeding ground in their waters during 1999. A planned eco-tourism industry could lead to expanded settlements and improved infrastructure, such as new roads, creating increased disturbance of natural habitats and subsequent loss of wildlife. With WWF-Philippines conducting research and conservation work on the marine ecosystems of the Babuyan Islands, there was an equal need for research and conservation efforts focused on the area’s terrestrial habitats. Since the islands have been little studied in the past, the first step towards protecting the stability of their ecosystems was a research study to identify the terrestrial fauna and important habitats present within the island group. The Philippine government took the necessary initial actions to designate part of the island group as a protected Landscape and Seascape early in June 2003. The aim of the Babuyan Islands Expedition 2004 was to provide basic information about the birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians of the islands of Camiguin Norte, Calayan, Babuyan Claro and Dalupiri, all of which lie within the municipality of Calayan.
