  • World Cup Cricket, England, 1983
World Cup Cricket, England, 1983 With the elevation of Sri Lanka to Test status, only one place was available through qualification at the ICC Trophy, held in England in 1982. The newcomers, Zimbabwe, dominated the competition, defeating Bermuda in the final. There was a change of format, with again two groups of four, but this time they played each other twice each, thus doubling the number of matches played. The West Indies, still with Greenidge, Haynes, Richards and Lloyd at the top of the order, and Marshall, Roberts, Garner and Holding forming a strong pace attack, were hot favourites. Group A England, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka contested this group. England got off to a flying start, with a surprisingly easy win over New Zealand. Lamb made a fine century, and Snedden became the only bowler ever to concede over 100 runs in a World Cup match with figures of 12-1-105-2. England's 322/6 was too much for New Zealand despite 95 from Martin Crowe, with Willis taking 2/9 off 7 overs. Mohsin Khan, Zaheer Abbas, Javed Miandad and Imran Khan all had half centuries as Pakistan made hay against the Sri Lankan bowling in their first match. Despite 72 from Kuruppu and 59 from the number 9 bat, de Alwis, Sri Lanka were always behind the required run rate, and Pakistan won by 50 runs. When England took on Sri Lanka two days later the scoreline was almost identical. England made 333, with Gower contributing a superb 130, and Sri Lanka this time got to within 47 runs, Mendis with a 50 and de Alwis, promoted to 8, 58*.

CBI‟s REPORT ON CRICKET MATCH FIXING AND RELATED MALPRACTICES http://cbi.nic.in/match1.htm SECTION-I GENERAL (a) GENESIS: In response to the request from Ministry of Sports regarding an inquiry into match fixing and related malpractices in Indian Cricket, vide DO No. F-23-8/2000-SP.III from Shri N.N. Khanna, Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Youth Affairs and Sports, CBI registered a Preliminary Enquiry No. 2/S/2000 on 2.5.2000. The scope of the PE is broadly limited to the letter of Shri N.N. Khanna in which there is a general mention of various allegations as they had appeared in the media as well as issues raised during a debate in both the Houses of Parliament. The Ministry‟s letter further requests the CBI to collect and evaluate various news-items and information published in both the print and electronic media and conduct a comprehensive enquiry into the allegations of match fixing and related malpractices connected with the game of cricket. (b) PARAMETERS: After registering the PE, CBI undertook an exercise to fix certain parameters, since the enquiry was open-ended without setting for itself any specific time-frame for which the probe was to be conducted or specific allegations or names which had to be looked into or specific areas which had to be enquired into. In this connection it was decided that first of all a broad enquiry was to be made to ascertain whether match fixing and other malpractices connected with the game of cricket existed. Accordingly, the following corner-stones were fixed as primary focal points of this enquiry: (1) to identify the betting syndicates operating in India and examine their activities; (2) to unravel the linkages of cricket players or their intermediaries with these syndicates and their roles in the alleged malpractices; and (3) to examine the role and functions of BCCI so as to evaluate whether it could have prevented the alleged malpractices.

JUSTICE VIKRAMAJIT SEN Office: Administrator, DDCA, Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium E-mail: [email protected], Tele: 26317274 20th November 2017 PRESS RELEASE It is essential that Delhi & District Cricket Association recognizes and honors’ retired cricketers who are the quintessence of a cricketing body. Recognition of sportsmen and their contribution is not only just, but is a great source of inspiration for aspiring cricketers. In line with this thought, I have constituted an ‘Honours Committee’ comprising of Chairperson Justice (Retd.) Mukul Mudgal, Dr. Narottam Puri -- DDCA Member and noted Cricket Commentator, Mr. Ravi Chaturvedi -- DDCA Member and noted Cricket Commentator, Ms. Neeru Bhatia Vijay Lokapally --- senior sports journalist and Mr.Vijay Lokapally --- senior sports journalist. The Honours Committee and I are of the view that the cricketing atmosphere in DDCA needs to be revived and the following initiatives will hopefully contribute towards that end: 1) DDCA will host the FIRST DDCA ANNUAL CONCLAVE on 29th November at our iconic Ferozeshah Kotla stadium. Mr Bishan Singh Bedi has agreed to be the keynote speaker. 2) The Conclave will also witness the inauguration of the ‘BISHAN SINGH BEDI STAND’ and the ‘MOHINDER AMARNATH STAND’ in recognition of their immense contribution to DDCA and Indian cricket. 3) In order to recognize, encourage and reward the contribution that Women deserve in our country and in her sports, a woman cricketer has been chosen too and it has been decided to name a gate in the name of Arjuna award winner and Padamshri awardee, Ms. Anjum Chopra.
