Williams, B. M. Ed. Denton, Texas May, 1968 PREFACE Music of the Baroque era can be best perceived through a detailed study of the elements with which it is constructed. Through the analysis of melodic characteristics, rhythmic characteristics, harmonic characteristics, textural charac- teristics, and formal characteristics, many choral problems related directly to performance practices in the Baroque era may be solved. It certainly cannot be denied that there is a wealth of information written about Handel's Messiah and that readers glancing at this subject might ask, "What is there new to say about Messiah?" or possibly, "I've conducted Messiah so many times that there is absolutely nothing I don't know about it." Familiarity with the work is not sufficient to produce a performance, for when it is executed in this fashion, it becomes merely a convention rather than a carefully pre- pared piece of music. Although the oratorio has retained its popularity for over a hundred years, it is rarely heard as Handel himself performed it. Several editions of the score exist, with changes made by the composer to suit individual soloists or performance conditions. iii The edition chosen for analysis in this study is the one which Handel directed at the Foundling Hospital in London on May 15, 1754. It is version number four of the vocal score published in 1959 by Novello and Company, Limited, London, as edited by Watkins Shaw, based on sets of parts belonging to the Thomas Coram Foundation (The Foundling Hospital).

Buelow: HANDEL'S BORROWING TECHNIQUES: SOME FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS DERIVED FROM A STUDY OF "AGRIPPINA" (VENICE, 1709)* Winton Dean, in his "New Grove Dictionary" article, laments the fact that much ink has been spilled over discussions about Handel's borrowings of music from himself and from other composers. True it is that the issue of Handel as borrower, as well as Handel the plagiarizer, has run a course through most of the critical writings about Handel and his music, beginning already in his own lifetime. The history of these fascinating and important issues touching upon aesthetic, sociological, and even moral concepts has not as yet been analyzed in any depth1• And while the search for Handel's sources of musical ideas in other composers' music began in the early 19th century, the quest continues unabetted as the !ist of Handel' s indebtedness to others grows ever longer2• Only in the past decade, however, has a new attitude evolved towards Handel 's borrowings, especially in the writings of Walther Siegmund-Schultze3, Bernd Baselt4 , and more recently Reinhold Kubik 5, John Roberts6 , and others. The issue, for the first time, begins to take an a positive dimension in a critical stance that sees in Handel's extensive and manifold adaptations of his and other composers' works vital clues to defining the unique genius of his compositional craft and his stylistic individuality. We·stand on the threshold of what should be illuminating new approaches to the study of Handel' s oeuvre. The examination an "Agrippina" outlined here substantiates this writer's belief that before more progress can be achieved in ·changing what has been an abiding issue of curiosity and even embarassment into a new line of inquiry for Handel's music, we must ask some important and often difficult questions, seek at least tentative answers, press forward for a better methodology, and above all, become a closer community of Handel scholars.

Perhaps other members of the AHS would be willing to provide reports on the performances at Göttingen, and also those at Halle that I was unable to attend. "La Resurrezione" is a product of Handel's apprenticeship in Rome, where it had its premiere on Easter Sunday in 1708 and immediately offended Pope Clement XI. Defying a papal ban against women onstage, Handel dared permit a lady to sing the ravishing part of Mary Magdalene.   • George Frideric Handel
    George Frideric Handel (1685–1759). A musical giant of the late baroque period, George Frideric Handel was born in Germany but spent most of his adult life in England. He successfully combined German, French, Italian, and English musical styles in about 40 operas, 20 oratorios, and numerous other vocal pieces, instrumental works, and church music. Handel was born on February 23, 1685, in Halle, in Brandenburg. In addition to studying music, he was trained in the law at Halle University. Although appointed organist of the Halle Cathedral in 1702, he moved to Hamburg the next year, where he obtained a position as violinist, and later harpsichordist, in the opera orchestra. His St. John Passion was performed in 1704 and his first opera, Almira, in 1705. Handel then went to Italy, which was the musical center of Europe, where his work was already known. He met the leading musicians of the day and composed the operas Rodrigo and Agrippina, many Italian solo cantatas, Latin church music, and the oratorio La Resurrezione. In 1710 Handel succeeded his friend Agostino Steffani as director of music for the elector of Hanover. A few months later he left for London. His opera Rinaldo was received enthusiastically in London in 1711, and his Ode for the Queen’s Birthday and Utrecht Te Deum and Jubilate in celebration of the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 won him a royal pension. As composer, producer, and director of operas, Handel continued until 1741 despite changing public tastes, backstage rivalries, and financial problems. In 1718 he became director of music to the duke of Chandos, for whom he composed the 12 Chandos Anthems and Haman and Mordecai, later reworked as Esther, the beginning of a string of oratorios that continued until 1752 with Jephtha.

George Sand, Consuelo (1842) Opera in the Ottocento was not always nineteenth-century in origin nor were its fashions wholly romantic in nature. The revival of Gluck’s operas by Berlioz paralleled Mendelssohn’s recovery of Bach’s vocal music, and one finds, in addition to many operas based on romantic epics and dramas, a small but significant return in newly written operas to topics based on classical history and mythology. Arias and scenas by Lully, Marcello, Handel, and Pergolesi were performed and studied, and these had an important impact on both instrumental music and opera. Among the composers of nineteenth-century opera most affected by these classicizing trends, Berlioz, Meyerbeer, and Gounod stand out in particular. But prob- ably no one was more significant to the legacy of eighteenth-century opera in the Ottocento than the singer Pauline Garcia Viardot (1821–1910). Viardot’s veneration of the music of the eighteenth century is well documented. Her depiction of Orpheus in Gluck’s opera Orphée, which role Berlioz adapted especially for Viardot, became, perhaps, her signature operatic role; this was followed by the title role of Gluck’s Alceste, also adapted by Berlioz. A devotee of Bach, she shared this deep interest at first with Chopin and Mendelssohn and, later, with her Berlin friend Julius Rietz, a conductor, composer, and editor of Mendelssohn’s complete works for Breitkopf & Härtel.

KATHLEEN MAURER, ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA DECEMBER 2015 ii ABSTRACT This study traces the use of solo angel roles in vocal music from 1600 to the present, focusing specifically on one to two works from each period that contain the most prominent angel roles. Each chapter centers on a particular period of time, analyzing the angel roles and seeking to find a relationship between the representation of the angel in vocal music and the religious and social climate of the era. The fascination with the spiritual and supernatural during the baroque era, as well as the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, affected the amount of angel solo roles. In the late-seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, many began to question traditional religious beliefs in the search for rational and scientific thought. The amount of sacred vocal music composed during this time suffered an overall decline, causing a corresponding decline in angel roles composed. The nineteenth century also witnessed a general decline in sacred choral works; however, movements such as German nationalism, romanticism, and historicism, as well as the influence of Felix Mendelssohn helped to revive interest in sacred vocal music. The twentieth century witnessed a renewed fascination with angels, causing a resurgence in the amount of musical angel roles, especially towards the latter part of the century. The angel roles from the following works are studied in detail: Heinrich Schütz’s Weihnachtshistorie, George Frideric Handel’s La Resurrezione, Franz Joseph Haydn’s The Creation, Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Sir Edward Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, Arnold Schoenberg’s Die Jakobsleiter, and Olivier Messiaen’s Saint François D’Assise.
