FUN TIMES SOUTH AIRSTREAM CLUB Wally Byam Caravan Club International April 2020

Greetings! Here we are in a “new normal” as the broadcasters keep saying! How our lives have changed over the last 6 – or – 8 – or is it 12 weeks now! The unit caravan was cancelled – the Region 3 Rally was cancelled – the International rally was cancelled/moved to electronic meeting. We wear masks out in public and distance ourselves from others! It is “new”, but is it “normal? Let’s consider the following.

Many of us have just experienced two events of great magnitude – Lent/Easter and Passover. Both of these show God’s rescue of mankind. God cares for us – look to Him in FAITH! This is NORMAL! All of us are experiencing a situation in which we must call on FAITH/trust in others. We have FAITH in our med- FAITH ical persons to provide needed care and advice. This is NORMAL! We have FAITH that our neighbors will look out for us, that our family will do their best to stay healthy, that our government agencies will be able to pro- vide the services that are needed in our community. This is NORMAL! FAITH that our fellow Airstreamers will keep in touch/ let us know if they need help! FAITH IS OUR NORMAL!

So where are we now? Will that COVID -19 ever leave us alone? Our scientists, re- searchers, medical personnel, first responders, truckers, volunteers and companies are working tirelessly to bring expertise, supplies and medicine in this crisis! WE H HAVE HOPE! We look to the past and remember that we have survived calamities and know that we will survive this one as well. WE HAVE HOPE! Many of us have O made reservations for the South Florida Unit Caravan, March 8-19, 2021. (Look for information elsewhere in this newsletter) WE HAVE HOPE! P

We help our neighbors – from a safe distance! WE SHOW E LOVE! We contribute to the food banks! WE SHOW LOVE! We support our churches, synagogues, and charities. WE SHOW LOVE! We send a note to our first responders, medical LOVE personnel, truckers, restaurant chefs, delivery drivers, hairdresser, barber, manicurist, postal worker, grocery clerk, garbage collector, lawn ser- vice provider, water supplier, FPL, etc. WE SHOW LOVE! We keep in touch with our Airstream buddies! WE SHOW LOVE!

THANK YOU FOR KEEPING THE FAITH. CONTINUING TO HOPE, AND SHOWING YOUR LOVE!

President Eileen Frerking welcomed our new members .

Minutes: President Eileen Frerking asked for a motion to not read the minutes from prior meeting as they had been published in our recent News Letter. Susan Quintana made a motion to accept them as reported, Beth Racavich sec- ond the motion, the motion was approved by all.

Officers Reports: President Eileen Frerking went over the upcoming Club Caravan, starting March 16 through March 25, 2020. Judy Harrison and Edwin Exum will be hosting Lake Kissimmee State Park. Some of the activities include a visit to the Bok Tower Gardens, including a tour of the mansion, and a picnic lunch on the grounds. Judy will have additional site seeing information for us to explore, such as the Pool Hills gardens and other activities.

Lake Louisa will be hosted by Donna and Tony Laurie, Lake Louisa is about half hour from Orlando, very close to Clermont. It is a big campground, with three lakes, there is canoeing, hiking, and fishing possibilities for the out- door lovers. The City of Clermont, has a lot of activities to offer. Friday night, Lake Ridge Winery will be having a sea-food and wine festival. The City of Clermont on Saturday night will be having a wine tasting event where you can buy a glass for $15 dollars and you can wonder around the town and visit the local stores. Donna Laurie is also looking into a visit to the Blueberry Farm. If the berries are ready for picking we can go in and pick our own. There is also Farmers Market and you can always visit Orlando. More information to come.

Eileen and John Frerking will be hosting Lake O’Leno. There are springs nearby that we can visit. Gainesville is near and we will be visiting a Bee Research Center, that will be on March 24th. Per Judy please wear long pants and long sleeves and closed toe shoes so that you can enjoy the tour safely. There is also Ginny Springs nearby, We will also visit an Olive Oil Factory in High Springs, FL. A Tasting is approximately $15pp. We can just visit and see what they have to offer. There are also neat Cafes in the area that we can visit for lunch. There are many muse- ums you can visit in Gainesville. If you like antiques, you can drive down to the town of Micanopy where you will find many stores.

Eileen Frerking advised the following regarding Region 3 Rally, Myrtle Beach, SC April 1-5. If you want to attend, please make your reservations soon as space is limited. Eileen has been sending sneak peak announcements.

The 63rd WBCCI International Rally is June 20-27, in Loveland CO. Eileen and John Frerking will not be able to attend as they will be traveling in Europe. Judy Harrison and Elwin Exum will be attending and they will be repre- senting our unit. Eileen Frerking will submit the proper documents for their representation.

Judy Harrison gave us on update for the 2021 Unit Caravan; We will visit 4 Florida State Parks ( It was confirmed that all parks are now open to the public). The caravan will start March 10 and will end on March 21, 2021. , Saint Augustine, FL

6 Suwannee River State Park, Live Oak, FL Florida Caverns State Park, Marianna, FL St George Island State Park, St George, FL

Eileen Frerking will send out a blast to all members to remind them to make their reservations a day before the res- ervations can be made. Make sure you are available early in the morning because the reservations fill very quickly. Approximately 8:30am is when they open up. Judy Harrison mentioned she has a reservation open for this year caravan in the O’Leno State Park if anybody needs it. Eileen also mentioned that Vicki had reservations for all three parks but will not be able to attend. Please contact Eileen Frerking if you are interested in these openings.

Patricio Donoso raised the question of what is the best way to book reservations as many times for some places like the Florida Keys is almost impossible to find spots. It was mentioned that the snow birds take up many of the spots. Eileen Frerking mentioned that she raised the question to our state legislators and some solutions might be on the works, such as only being able to book two weeks and then be out for one week before you can book again.

Judy Harrison mentioned that she is looking into having our November 2021 Installation Rally in Pembroke Pines, Fl in CB Smith State Park. There is a rodeo nearby that we might be able to visit. She thinks the final tournament might be during our stay.

Emilio Caragol, went over the Maintenance Workshop. He worked with Bill Racavich, Tony Laurie, John Frerking and Patricio Donoso. It was broken down in sections, each person will talk about a subject. The purpose is to share experiences of what works and what doesn’t. The work put into preparing this workshop by all is greatly appreciat- ed.

Corresponding Secretary’s Report: Nai Carlson was absent, but Eileen Frerking advised the club has received a “Thank you” card from Andy Selking in appreciation of our memorial contribution for his loving wife Barbara Sel- king. Eileen Frerking passed along a few “Get Well” cards for our sick members, Nai Carlson, and Max Joseph. We will send a Birthday card to Ruth Wilson a long time member of our unit for her 95th celebration. Ruth re- ceives all her correspondence at her daughter Barbara Colson address who is also a member of our club. Feel free to send your personal card if you want.

Treasurer’s Report: Susan Quintana, Treasurer, reported we have $2462.18 in our checking account. We have the 2 CD’s of $5,030 & $7,030. A donation of $330.00 was given to PEPPI and a memorial donation for Barbara Sel- king. We had a total expenditures of $474.10. The Treasure Report will be filed for audit.

Committee Reports: Beth Racavich gave a report about the Club luncheon in Ft Myers that was held in January. The lunch was set up with the intention of meeting the new members from the west coast. Beth sent e-mails, texts, and made phone calls. Unfortunately none of them attended the lunch.

Bob Richardson complemented the Unit for the dynamic and exciting activities it plans for its members to keep the club experiencing the world.

Eileen Frerking recognized our past Region Presidents: Bob Richardson of Region 2 and John Frerking for Region 3. We know there is a lot of work that goes into this position and we are thankful for their service to the club mem- bers. Eileen Frerking also recognized Beth and Bill Racavich for their leadership in the Club Caravans, “Watch it made”. It is a lot of planning and hard work, but Beth and Bill Racavich love it because its fun.

John Miller President of The Florida Springs Unit, shared that his unit has been around for a long time. They are now in a Cares-Taker mode. They have 23 members with only 3 participating in the Rallies. He sends friendly e- mails, and calls and no response. They only had 3 people participate in the Christmas Rally which was free. Not too long they held a luncheon and 25 participated. Out of the 25 only 5 were active members, the others are old mem- bers that cannot participate any more. Members don’t pay members due or Rally fees, but they just cannot get peo- ple to participate. Eileen Frerking invited John Miller and his members to join our unit activities.

Eileen Frerking mentioned how fortunate our club has been to get some new “spark-plugs” like Judy Harrison, El- win Exum, Emilio and Shirley Caragol, Patricio and Essy Donoso, and Stephanie Farmer and Michael.

7 John Frerking advised us that the participation issue is going on in the International Club and in all Regions. Units are merging. It’s called “aging out,” and it happens in all units and clubs. John Frerking encouraged us to not be discouraged. We need to continue reaching out to those who are not members.

Trustees: Patricio made a recommendation for a restaurant near our Installation Rally in Pembroke Pines called La Carreta, that has great Cuban food and can accommodate large groups.

Old Business: Eileen Frerking advised that we have a new Club Flag, and we needed a pole to display it. In the last Executive meeting it was agreed that a new one would be orderd. Thanks to Tony Laurie we now have a new flag pole for our new flag. Thank you Tony!

New Business: Beth Racavich made a recommendation to give a donation to the Lipizzaner horses. Caroline Zim- mer-Stone advised us that the horses are in good shape and that our funds would be better used somewhere else. Tony Laurie suggested we give it to the State Parks as they are in great need. Eileen Frerking advised she will give the responsibility to the Executive Committee to decide where the donation should go. Bob Richardson made a mo- tion to consider donating again to the Military Heritage Museum in Punta Gorda, FL. Another suggestion was to give to the local food bank.

Judy Harrison mentioned the Urban Rally in Habana, FL, The rally already has 100 registered participants. It is right after the Unit Caravan.

Donna Laurie advised us that we are looking for a 2nd Vice President and 3rd if possible. We are also looking for a Recording Secretary. Stephanie Farmer has already agreed to be a Trustee. If you are interested in any of these positions, please contact Donna Laurie.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:15 a.m.

Respectfully submitted, Essy Donoso, Recording Secretary

9 SCAM AND SCAMMERS, PHISHING AND SMISHING, VISHING BE SHARP – THINK!*

In times of crisis, sadly, there are those who take advantage of others. Here's what you need to know (and do) to stay as safe as possible. The best way to avoid getting tricked by scammers is to know the tricks they use – and the red flags that signal scams. Know the red flags.

The most common types of scams will target you through fake emails (a technique known as phishing), text messages (SMSishing or smishing) voice calls (vishing), letters or even someone who shows up at your front door unexpectedly. No matter which technique the scammer uses, you may be:

• Instructed to not trust your bank or to respond to questions in ways that aren’t the truth • Pressured to send money • Threatened with law enforcement action • Told to purchase gift cards and provide codes as a form of payment • Asked to cash a check for a stranger or send money via wire transfer • Asked to deposit a check that overpays for something you're selling, and then send the difference elsewhere • Tempted to buy products online that seem too good to be true or are hard to find

The best ways to avoid getting scammed

• Don’t provide your information or send money to a scammer, there is often little that can be done to help get your money back. • Don't send gift cards as payment or buy gift cards for someone you don’t know • Don't cash checks for strangers or return funds for overpayment • Don't provide account or personal information via email or text • Never Trust Caller ID • Don't give an unsolicited caller or solicitor your personal information or codes • Don't pay upfront for a promise • Don't click on unsolicited links or attachments sent via email or text • Never give an unsolicited caller remote access to your computer • Don't wire money without verifying instructions • Don't feel pressured to act immediately

*Information on this page was taken from an email from Bank of America.

10 Common types of scams:

• Imposter: "I'm with the IRS and a lawsuit is being filed against you for back taxes "

• Tech support: "We've detected malware on your computer, let's go ahead and get this fixed for you"

• Business email compromise: "Process a wire for $x and send to the account in the email attached"

• Email account compromise: "There's been a change in the transfer for closing, please now send the money to"

• Grandparent: "Grandma I'm in trouble, I need your help, I need some money really fast"

• Romance: "I'd love to come to see you but I don't have the money to travel right now, can you help me out?"

• Lottery and sweepstakes: "Your email address was randomly picked to participate in a drawing, send us your details"

• Investment: "Glad I got you! Sometime back you responded to one of our pro grams for information, are you ready to invest?"

• Charity: "Hi, the reason for my call is to see if you would donate to help preserve our local park"

• Overpayment for goods or service: "Deposit the check and wire the difference to the account number attached"

• Fake goods: "Please transfer money to my account and I will ship you the items"

• Debt relief: "I can help you reduce or eliminate your debt"

• Assistance cashing a check: "Excuse me, I just realized I left my wallet at home, can you cash this check for me?"

• Fake house/apt rental: "Hi, I see you received my rental deposit and wanted to fol low up about the move in date"

WE DID IT!

No, we didn’t get to do it! We didn’t get to enjoy our Florida State Parks Caravan 2020! We were glad/sad because we were safe from COVID-19 --- but at home without the Airstream! Thanks to Donna Laurie, the Executive Team found a way to remember our parks and also honor our club! Our usual donation of $100.00 will plant 100 pine trees in our parks by the Florida State Parks Foundation. Our club’s name will be placed on their honor roll. CORONA

Is it blowing in the wind? Is it going up your nose? Is it clinging to your hands? Is it hiding in your hose?

Will your groceries contain it? Perhaps come in with the mail? Will your neighbor cough it out to you? And leave a deadly ?

Oh Corona, Corona, Dare I even say your name? Will you come if I do that? Will we ever be the same?

LOOKING AHEAD for 2020/2021 By Judy Harrison 1st Vice President

Hello Unit 30

I know everyone is bored while staying safe at home but this too will pass! We did have a bit of excitement trying to book state parks for the 2021 Unit Caravan. A word to everyone, if you didn’t secure a site just check in with Reserve America a few times a week and there will be cancellations. I set it up on my homepage and then added favorites once on the site to make it quick to check. Try around 8 am for best results.

The dates for the Caravan are March 8-19, 2021. Parks are March,8-March 10 Anastasia, March 11-13, Stephen Foster Cultural Center, March 14 & 15 Florida Caverns, March 16-19 Three Rivers State Park.

We are still planning our installation rally for November 11-15 at CB Smith county park in Pembroke Pines. Probably not too early to make your reservations for that event. Hopefully we will be able to attend a rodeo while there as one of our many activities.

Everyone stay safe and hope to see you all somewhere down the road when we have re- covered. Meanwhile prayers for Our Nation, Our People and Our World.

Judy Harrison Vice President.

Florida State Park Caravan 2020 An Adventure - Tom & Nai Carlson

14 While we were driving on US-27 N, the phone rang… “Hello Nai, this is Donna.” I thought she was calling about the bagels I was to bring for the breakfast that she organized, but… “Due to COVID 19, the caravan has been canceled.” Since we were already on the road, we decided to move on.

Our first destination was Hickory Hammock Equestrian Center, on McAr- thur 1 Rd., Lorida, FL 33857. Even though the campsites are free, access re- quires a permit from South Florida Water Management District. We went online at https://www.sfwmd.gov/community-residents/recreation/sul, filled out the application and set up an account before asking for the permit. It was a dry campsite with a typical picnic table and fire pit. Camp amenities included ‘deluxe’ pit toilets and a refreshing cold-water outdoor shower…privacy screen included. It was a bit of a trek to get to our campsite; a 3-mile drive on a wash- board dirt road from the main gate. But camping was quiet with a very dark

15 night sky, so we enjoyed some spectacular star gazing including a view of the Orion Constellation and both the Big and Little Dippers. I loved those majestic oak trees draped with Spanish Moss, and we went hiking on a trail and saw even more beautiful oak trees.

16 We knew that the caravan was canceled but we still hoped that we would find someone from Unit 30 at Lake Kissimmee State Park. No Unit 30’s, but a fellow Air Streamer from Toronto, Canada came over to say hello. The campsites are big and shady, plenty of oak trees and you feel remote. We did- n’t do much beyond relaxing and enjoying the surroundings. We always learn something new when we are on the road. While we were sitting outside under the awning, we saw a caterpillar here and there. After a while, so many of them dropped out of the oak trees onto our shoul- ders and crawling all over our chairs and table. Isn’t camping grand?! There is an element of surprise in each location we visited. That makes traveling fun.

By the second day, we were told that all SP’s will be closed. Here again, another surprise!

Should we head back home? Not yet.

18 We were lucky to get two nights at Magnolia Park, 2929 Binion Road, Apopka, FL 32703. For a reservation call 407-886-4231. This was the second time we’ve stayed at this campground. It is an ideal place to see the sunset over Lake Apopka which has a 17mile biking and hiking trail on the north end of the lake. The lake was once an international destination for bass fishing un- til sugarcane farming fowled the water, but over the last twenty years a resto- ration program has returned the lake to a haven for birds and fishermen alike.

20 With our vacation time running out, we opted to test our dry camping skills one more time and set out early for Clearwater Lake Campground 24511 Co Rd 42, Paisley, FL 32767 in the . As luck would have it, we got the last remaining first-come first-serve dry campsite available…and within easy walking distance to a hot water bathhouse and a charming beach area...dry camping doesn’t have to be too challenging! And we took ad- vantage of our new location to visit Alexander Springs for lunch and a dip in some very cold spring water.

It was here we were told that the National Parks would be closing the following day…what?!
