It's their brains. That much is made clear by learning about the most mundane of tasks required of every NFL player: memorizing the playbook. It's an act which often goes unrecognized because it is so fundamental. Players are given plays, they memorize them and they execute them on the field. Yet as a variety of current and former NFL players explained to FanHouse, it's not as easy as it sounds. Trent Dilfer, a 13-year NFL quarterback for five teams who's now an NFL analyst for ESPN, recalled exactly how he memorized his plays. "Visualization," Dilfer said. "You must highlight, draw (the play), put the playbook down and find a quiet place in your mind and visualize every aspect of the play. A lot of time is dedicated to that. The basic principle is repetition is the mother of all learning." Dilfer noted that when he was in Mike Holmgren's offense in Seattle, which he considers the most complicated offensive system in which he played, the quarterbacks would watch film after practice and quiz each other for an hour about plays. -

YORK TROPHY In July 2007, the Nashville Sports Council and the Ohio Valley Con- ference announced the creation of the Sergeant York Trophy which goes to the winner of the quadrangular season football series between the four Ohio Valley Conference schools located in the state of Tennessee – Austin Peay State University, University of Tennessee at Martin, Tennessee State University and Tennessee Technological University. The award is only the second traveling trophy that involves more than two teams in college sports; the other is the Commander in Chief’s Trophy which has been contested between Air Force, Army and Navy annually since 1972. The award is presented by Delta Dental of Tennessee and Farm Bureau Health Plans of Tennessee. In a close race, Tennessee State and Austin Peay shared the inaugural award, fi nishing with identical 2-1 records in 2007. Tennessee State took the trophy home with it thanks to a one-point victory in overtime over the Governors; that game was decided by a blocked extra point by NFL First Round Draft Pick Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. The award is named in honor of Alvin C. York, the most noted Soldier of World War I. As a corporal in the 2nd battalion, 328th Infantry, in the Battle of the Meuse River-Argonne (Oct. 8, 1918), York and seven other soldiers captured 132 prisoners, was promoted to sergeant and received the Distinguished Service Cross, the French Croix de Guerre, the French Legion of Honor, the Croce di Guerra of Italy and the War Medal of Montenegro. Upon his return to the United States in 1919, he was bestowed the Congressional Medal of Honor. -

CHAD’S A FAKER! New York Jets quarterback CHAD PENNINGTON posted a 8-4 (.667) record in his first season as the team’s starting QB last season, leading the Jets to their second division title and a playoff victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Pennington led the NFL with a 104.2 passer rating and completed 68.9 percent of his passes, tops in the league. PAUL HACKETT, the Jets offensive coordinator, attributes a lot of Pennington’s success to his play-faking ability. In fact, Hackett calls Pennington the best play-faking quarterback in the league. Hackett on why Pennington is such a good faker: 1. In order to be successful, you have to study yourself in the running game so you know what you look like when you hand it off. That is where Chad is masterful. He looks at himself in the running game so it will look exactly the same. 2. Fake with the ball, not with your hands. 3. Chad is a natural at performing the play-fake. He’s at a very sophisticated level. 4. You have to like it. That’s important. You have to be fascinated with it. You have to think, “This is a big deal, a fun thing.” Then you have a chance. Chad does that. He has fun. 5. You’ve got to have a quarterback who understands that when he does hand the ball off, he must act like he still has the ball. You have to carry out every fake. Chad is great at this. 6. Don’t over-exaggerate the fake.
