  • A 40 Year History
New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association National Secondary School Cross Country Championships A 40 Year History Introduction The New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association is proud to publish a forty- year history of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships. Participation in the event between 1974 and 2013 totals well over 10,000 athletes from all but a handful of schools from around the country. With an annual involvement of over 1000 students it has become one of the largest secondary school sporting events in New Zealand. The idea for this document was born during the 1995 NZSSCC Championships in Masterton. At this time (before the internet), results were published in a hard copy booklet. In this particular year the first three place getters in the individual, and three and six person team categories were published for the first twenty-one years of the events history. This accompanied the full set of 1995 results. After this event, the majority of results were published electronically. Unfortunately, many of these results were lost in the mid to late nineties because there was no dedicated NZSSAA website. Sincere thanks need to be given to Don Chadderton for providing the first twenty years’ of results. Without these early results a significant part of athletics New Zealand’s history would have eventually been forgotten. These include the 1974 performance of Alison Rowe, who would later go on to win both the 1981 Boston and New York marathons. As well as Burnside High School’s 1978 performance in the junior boys event where they completed the perfect three-man score of six points.

Like every commercial and not for profi t organisation, Tri NZ has needed to keep eyes fi xed on the ball during these tougher economic times. However, as a result of exceptional dedication and innovative management by Dave Beeche and the team our organisation is now in the position where we are presented with some of the most signifi cant opportunities the sport of triathlon has seen here in New Zealand. The Board continues to review and test our Strategic Plan At the ITU World Champs in Budapest, Hungary last and its relevance for our organisation and the sport of September, a solid number of Kiwi age groupers donned triathlon. We are committed to retaining our strong focus the silver fern to swim in a very cool river Danube then bike on the ‘three Ps’ (Pathways, Profi le and Performance), and and run around the historic streets of this truly amazing city.

  • Walking in Warrington Profile ... Donna Tumaru
Walking in Warrington Very hard to find any reason to not enjoy the glorious summer we have experienced. While some days have been some what "overly hot" to go running, it has been an ideal for Keiran to gather his walking group and take in some pleasant and relaxing scenic locations. One of "Cavy Chat's" staff photographers Donna Tumaru was on hand to capture all the moments of a recent outing in and around Warrington, including that all important " cuppa" " was now time for that well earned "cuppa" ... were those that took it to the extreme" Profile ... Donna Tumaru So what else does our Donna do that we don't know about . Cavy Chat set out to find out . Cavy Chat: When did you join the Caversham Harriers ? Was it as a runner or a walker ?. Donna: "I came to the Harriers 'Open Day' after an invite from Kieran after I walked in the Moro Marathon. I think it was 2009, 7 years have flown by. I signed up on the day as a social walker to continue my walking and also wanting to meet some new people with the same interests. I love Walking, other than buying a pair of good shoes and it is a free sport, you get fit and enjoy the fresh air. I had been walking by myself for two or three years prior to that when I stopped running. I was a runner (a plodder) for around 8 years. I stopped as my knees were getting too sore from down hill running and I guess old age." Cavy Chat : What have been your best achievements firstly as a runner.

And along the way a number of exceptional highlights have been achieved both on and off the race courses. (Tri NZ) and the sport of triathlon generally are in very strong shape. When I wrote last year’s report the Olympic Games were just getting into full swing, and one year later the games seem like an age ago. Our Olympic athletes returned some excellent results, and of course particular congratulations go to Bevan Docherty for picking up a second Olympic medal. Whilst I know some of our Olympians are lamenting a day that didn’t end up quite as perfectly as they had dreamed of, I have no doubt that each one of the Kiwi’s prepared as well as they could and gave everything they had on the day. Congratulations to you all and to Stephen Farrell and the High Performance team for running a particularly successful Olympic campaign. Once again Kiwi triathletes have featured on the encouraging rate. This year more than 2,600 entries international arena in all sorts of exotic (and not so were received for the seven races, and the new event exotic) locations around the world.
