Until the Light Takes Us Wednesday 7 October at 6:15Pm UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US WEDNESDAY 7 OCTOBER AT 6:15PM There is certainly something rotten in the state of Norway: Satanism, the killing of ‘faggots’, the burning of churches, and lead singer Dead shooting his brain out with a shotgun, prompting an interviewee to opine how ‘Dead was dead in a bed’. It can only be one thing: Black Metal. This doc concentrates on some of the key players in the Black metal scene and investigates the influences, characters, art and the often-disturbing belief systems that are present in this morbidly engaging world. We hear the case against Christianity and its inherent disrespect for other cultures. American imperialism, consumerism and the tabloids also get it in the neck. Often the music takes a back seat to the sensational events that are discussed. But there’s enough to sate anyone from the darkside. The main Norwegian bands featured are Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, a wave of metal acts that take their cue from metal veterans Venom and Celtic Frost – with that regimented sound of distorted guitars, double-kick drums and the kind of vocals that make one want to eat one’s own ears. A healthily objective viewpoint is achieved by the directors who take matters pretty seriously, though at times, it’s the interviewees who seem to find the bizarre incidents almost amusing. The Black Lips get most of the airtime, which isn’t such a bad thing considering how hot a ticket they are right now with their balls-out, train-wreck of a live show. They create mayhem and play wild energetic, cranked-up garage rock. The name for the film is apt as it really seems that everyone is having the time of their lives – (and that includes the girl who operates a make-shift flamethrower from out of her private quarters). It’s not only about the music, this film is about the solidarity, community and sense of self-sufficiency that these people have – in spades. They make stuff happen and they don’t stall any of their creativity waiting for big record deals. It’s a trajectory that, for me, is a pleasure to watch. It’s genuine. Director Matthew Robison, producer of Silver Jew, about David Berman, keeps things snappy, intelligent and charmingly crude. There’s a lot going on and it’s pretty inspirational. Gabor plays the slick gentleman, backed by Tibi, marrying women for access to their bank accounts. This brings them easy but not exorbitant amounts of money, but when Gabor starts to fall for a high-risk mark however, things begin to spiral out of control. Uncertain whether he is playing the beautiful dancer Hanna, or falling in love with her, he gets drawn into an increasing number of complex cons to keep their relationship up. Chameleon, unlike many of its con-film American equivalents has a certain depth, capturing the pathos of the victims, who also build an anger and ability to push back at their manipulator. Developing characters with meticulous detail, the protagonists question their tendency towards deception, disguises and sense of achievements whilst it is also uncertain who is betraying whom. The third feature from Krisztina Goda, after Just Sex And Nothing Else and Children of Glory, Chameleon is this year’s official Hungarian entry for the Best Foreign Language film category of the Academy Awards. His boss’ Uncle Paco has him beaten and shoved on a bus to the remote seaside Galacian region. A stranger, Raul, the foreman of a fish processing plant, offers him a job. Soon Sebastian realises there is no such thing as a free lunch – he is being used by Raul to ferry large quantities of cocaine inland. Worse comes to worse when Sebatian kills Raul when he discovers Raul is about to snitch to the cops. Now Sebastian is the pawn with the big time gangsters as he tries to extract himself from the life he created and if possible, some of the huge quantities of cash being passed around. Directed by senior figures at Spanish television broadcaster TVE Samuel Martín Mateos and Andrés Luque, this debut is an unscrupulous and unsettling look at drug trafficking in Spain’s Galician region, artfully directed and supported by outstanding performances from lead Carmelo Gomez and Hugo Silva. He’s a loner with serious communication problems, meticulous and silent, if slightly out of touch with life. When his sick mother seems to be on her deathbed, Tibi fails to accept it. He even makes her the empty promise that she will live. Tibi’s life takes a sudden twist when a strange man, who calls himself Cyclops, enters into it. Just at his breaking point, Cyclops presents Tibi with a scheme to allow his mother to receive the expensive treatment for her bone marrow cancer. Tibi finds himself in a dilemma of decisions. He discovers just how far he can push his limits in the hope of saving his sick mother’s life. Winner of the best actor, screenplay and editing categories at this year’s Hungarian Film Week, The Investigator by first time director Attila Gigor is bound to keep you guessing on your toes. In 1972, New Orleans native Herman Joshua Wallace (b. 1941) was serving a 25-year sentence for bank robbery when he was accused of murdering an Angola Prison guard and thrown into solitary confinement. Many believed him wrongfully convicted. Appeals were made but Herman remained in jail and—to increasingly widespread outrage—in solitary. Years passed with one day much like the next. Then in 2001 Herman received a perspective- shifting letter from a Jackie Sumell, a young art student, who posed the provocative question: “What kind of house does a man who has lived in a six-foot-by-nine-foot cell for over 30 years dream of?” Thus began an inspired creative dialogue, unfolding over hundreds of letters and phone calls and yielding a multi-faceted collaborative project that includes the exhibition “The House That Herman Built.” The revelatory art installation—featuring a full-scale wooden model of Herman’s cell and detailed plans of his dream home—has brought thousands of gallery visitors around the world face-to-face with the harsh realities of the American prison system.

Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 Jonathan Wroot PhD Thesis Submitted to the University of East Anglia For the qualification of PhD in Film Studies 2013 1 Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 2 Acknowledgements Thanks needed to be expressed to a number of people over the last three years – and I apologise if I forget anyone here. First of all, thank you to Rayna Denison and Keith Johnston for agreeing to oversee this research – which required reining in my enthusiasm as much as attempting to tease it out of me and turn it into coherent writing. Thanks to Mark Jancovich, who helped me get started with the PhD at UEA. A big thank you also to Andrew Kirkham and Adam Torel for doing what they do at 4Digital Asia, Third Window, and their other ventures – if they did not do it, this thesis would not exist. Also, a big thank you to my numerous other friends and family – whose support was invaluable, despite the distance between most of them and Norwich. And finally, the biggest thank you of all goes to Christina, for constantly being there with her support and encouragement. 3 Abstract The thesis will examine how DVD distribution can affect Japanese film dissemination in the UK. The media discourse concerning 4Digital Asia and Third Window proposes that this is the principal factor influencing their films’ presence in the UK from 2008 to 2010.

  • Reviewing Distinctive DVD Experiences: NEO Magazine and the Critical Reception of Asian Media Distributors
. Volume 12, Issue 1 May 2015 Reviewing distinctive DVD experiences: NEO Magazine and the critical reception of Asian media distributors Jonathan Wroot, University of Worcester, UK Abstract: This article closely analyses the reviews for Asian films from the longest-running UK magazine that specialises in Asian media – NEO. The critical reception of Asian films has been investigated before, but what has not been realised is the significance of the DVD distributors in shaping these reviews. As a result of examining how influential the discs’ labels are on the review content, it becomes clear that the critics in NEO are assessing more than the film itself. The reviewers are evaluating the entire viewing experience that a home media format, such as DVD, can offer. This is important for Asian media as the NEO reviews illustrate how the discs are the primary means of accessing such films for UK audiences. The reviews also suggest that viewers are becoming aware, and have a substantial interest in, how distributors shape their viewing experience. Key words: Asian media, critical reception, distributors, DVD, Japanese films. DVDs are integral to how Asian media texts, such as Japanese films, are made available to UK consumers. Cinema releases and online outlets (via streaming or downloading) have not been consistently profitable practices for distributors that specialise in Asian films and media. Ever since the popularity of Japanese horror films from 2000 onwards, a steady stream of Asian cinema titles have made their way to the UK via DVD. The importance of this format has also been realised by other distributors of other media exports from Japan, such as anime (animation) and manga (comics).

Following the work of Peter Brooks on melodrama, the exploitation film is a mode concerned with spectacular violence and its relationship to the political, as defined by French philosopher Jacques Rancière. For Rancière, the political is an “intervention into the visible and sayable,” where members of a community who are otherwise uncounted come to be seen as part of the community through a “redistribution of the sensible.” This aesthetic rupture allows the demands of the formerly-invisible to be seen and considered. We can see this operation at work in the exploitation film, and by investigating a series of exploitation auteurs, we can augment our understanding of what Rancière means by the political.

'\ I1 ~0402594487 11111 U~ I. Continuity and Change in Hollywood Representations of the Middle East after September 11 th by Sulaiman Arti A Doctoral Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Award of Doctor of Philosophy of Loughborough University June 2009 © 2008 S. Arti Abstract This thesis inquires into the factors behind Hollywood's depiction of the Middle East. That depiction is not static, but is modified in response to changes in political events and US government foreign policy. Although the events of 9/11 seemed to justify the traditional negative stereotype of Arabs, the image has been partially and rationally re-interpreted. This was due to the rise in prominence of the ideas of a minority of radical and free-thinking members of the Hollywood cornmunity who embraced a more intellectual approach, which advocated that the popular Western view of the Arab world was unjustified and based on a fallacious fabrication for Western political advantage. The research further shows that these activists did not owe allegiance to the Hollywood-US government propaganda machine. They were able to fracture this traditional alliance and provide the opportunity for the appearance of films of a radical nature, which were critical of US Middle Eastern policy and projected the Arab world in a new light. The study analyzes a selection of films that represent the Middle East in terms of their philosophy and cinematic structure, which enables them to act as vectors to raise public awareness of the issues and to promote reconciliation and co-existence between East and West.

  • Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists.
