Parents, college staff and coaches all worked behind the scenes to ensure the team had the opportunity to represent their school at the tournament. Up against stiff competition, the team was unable to conjure up a victory in five games over the course of three days. However, players displayed some gutsy performances and showed real strength of character. Within the squad of twenty-one were novice rugby players, Caleb Pipson and Nic Edmond, who both impressed with their enthusiasm and commitment, while Waimate lads Jack Farrell and Scott McKinlay slotted into the Opihi team seamlessly. Notable mentions are Kyal Dickson and Jaxson Cullen who were outstanding in their defensive efforts, while Jaxson was rewarded with the final touchdown. Regan Thomas and Logan Larsen were in outstanding attacking form. Both scored impressive trys off the back of some great inside play, which had supporters on their feet on both occasions. On and off the field, the boys did Opihi College proud. Anyone wishing to view photos of the tournament are welcome to follow Temuka under 14.5 rugby team 2019 on Facebook.
