BICYCLE BOULEVARD DESIGN FEATURES LAWRENCE BICYCLE BOULEVARDS WHAT IS A BICYCLE BOULEVARD? Bicycle Boulevards are streets with low motorized traffic volumes and speeds, designated and designed to offer low-stress bicycle travel for all ages, safe crossings for pedestrians, placemaking opportunities, as well as allow for motor vehicle travel at low speeds. Bicycle Boulevards use signs, pavement markings, and speed and volume management measures to discourage through motor vehicle trips and create MAJOR STREET CROSSINGS SPEED MANAGEMENT safe, convenient bicycle crossings of busy arterial streets. HIGHER IMPORTANCE DESIGN ELEMENTS Many local streets with low existing speeds and volumes offer the basic components of a safe bicycling environment. These streets can be enhanced using a range of design treatments, tailored to existing conditions and desired outcomes, to create bicycle GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE PAVEMENT MARKINGS boulevards. Design treatments are grouped into measures that provide the following benefits: Major Street Crossings: Safe and convenient crossings Speed Management: Reduced motor vehicle speeds (based on 239 survey responses) survey (based on 239 Green Infrastructure: This optional element addresses water quantity and quality along a corridor. ROUTE PLANNING VOLUME MANAGEMENT Pavement Markings: Increased visibility Route Planning: Direct access to destinations Volume Management: Lower motor vehicle volumes Signs: Easy to find and follow Minimal bicyclist delay Minor Street Crossings: IMPORTANCE LOWER WAYFINDING MINOR STREET CROSSINGS WHAT WE HEARD LAWRENCE BICYCLE BOULEVARDS Throughout the course of the Bicycle Boulevards design process, the City has received valuable feedback from residents and stakeholders to help refine the conceptual plans WAYFINDING AND PAVEMENT MARKINGS for these bikeway corridors and better meet the needs and aspirations of the community. IDENTITY AND STRIPING PAVEMENT WAYFINDING WAYFINDING SIGNS STREET SIGNS MARKINGS PAVEMENT MARKINGS At the February open house meetings, attendees participated in voting exercise to identify design elements for consideration in the bicycle boulevard designs. Attendees were given several green stickers for design elements they preferred, and several red stickers for design elements that they did not prefer. It should be noted that fewer red stickers than green stickers were provided to each attendee in order to maintain focus on design elements for inclusion in the conceptual design. The results of the voting process are shown next to each design element, with the circle on the left representing the February 11th meeting, and the circle on the right representing the February 13th meeting. 2/11 2/13 2/11 2/13 2/11 2/13 2/11 2/13 MINOR INTERSECTIONS MAJOR INTERSECTIONS MINI TRAFFIC STOP SIGNS ON MEDIAN REFUGE ACTIVE WARNING SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS CURB EXTENSIONS HYBRID BEACONS CIRCLES CROSS STREETS ISLANDS BEACONS W/ BIKE BOXES 2/11 2/13 2/11 2/13 2/11 2/13 2/11 2/13 2/11 2/13 2/11 2/13 2/11 2/13 VOLUME MANAGEMENT SPEED MANAGEMENT MINI TRAFFIC NECKDOWNS & CURB DIAGONAL DIVERTER MEDIAN DIVERTER PARTIAL CLOSURE SPEED HUMPS & DIPS MEDIAN ISLANDS CHICANES CIRCLES EXTENSIONS 2/11 2/13 2/11 2/13 2/11 2/13 2/11 2/13 2/11 Only 2/13 Only 2/11 2/13 2/11 2/13 POP-UP DEMONSTRATION PROJECTS LAWRENCE BICYCLE BOULEVARDS 13TH & CONNECTICUT 21ST STREET PARTIAL CLOSURE & CHICANES NECKDOWNS TYPOLOGY: City of Lawrence INSPIRATION: COLOR PALETTE: Lawrence blue (PMS 2758 C) MATERIAL: .080” Aluminium with reflective sheeting WAYFINDING SIGNAGE LAWRENCE BICYCLE BOULEVARDS 22” 24” 24” 9’ Bike Boulevard MILES LHS 0.1 8’ Bike Boulevard Bike Blvd. KU Campus 0.3 ST ST W W Downtown 0.5 7’ 21st 200 21st 200 6’ 5’ 4’ 3’ 2’ 1’ Street sign Alternate Wayfinding topper (Decision) LAWRENCE, KANSAS SHEET 1 Wayfinding Concept Design 03.21.2019 PROCESS AND NEXT STEPS LAWRENCE BICYCLE BOULEVARDS The flowchart below outlines the typical lifecycle of a bikeway project, from master planning through construction.
