Analyze a World Map Materials: Map of the World: Political or use link this website Map of the World Worksheet You could start the discussion by saying that the social studies part of the GED test assumes that everyone has a basic knowledge of world geography. The test will contain maps that you have to analyze and the answers are not always directly on the map. This is one area of the test where they expect you to just know the approximate locations of countries and oceans. So we thought we would use this world map to familiarize everyone with some world geography. Hand out the maps. The first thing you need to do with a map is read the title so that you know what you are looking at. Ask, “What is the title of this map?” ‘Map of the World: Political”. So this map should give us information about the location of countries. Then look to see if there is a legend or a list of symbols that explains the information shown on the map. Ask, “Is there a legend for this map/” Yes, it shows the scale of the map. You can discuss that the scale shows the relationship between distances on the map to the actual distance on the ground. Look to see if there is anything on the map showing directions, most maps have a compass that shows east, west, north, and south. Ask, “Does this map have any symbols indicating direction?” Yes, this map has a direction compass that shows points north. Ask if students know where south, east, and west are on the map. -

G3 U2 OVR GRADE 3 UNIT 2 OVERVIEW Open Ocean Habitats Introduction The open ocean has always played a vital role in the culture, subsistence, and economic well-being of Hawai‘i’s inhabitants. The Hawaiian Islands lie in the Pacifi c Ocean, a body of water covering more than one-third of the Earth’s surface. In the following four lessons, students learn about open ocean habitats, from the ocean’s lighter surface to the darker bottom fl oor thousands of feet below the surface. Although organisms are scarce in the deep sea, there is a large diversity of organisms in addition to bottom fi sh such as polycheate worms, crustaceans, and bivalve mollusks. They come to realize that few things in the open ocean have adapted to cope with the increased pressure from the weight of the water column at that depth, in complete darkness and frigid temperatures. Students fi nd out, through instruction, presentations, and website research, that the vast open ocean is divided into zones. The pelagic zone consists of the open ocean habitat that begins at the edge of the continental shelf and extends from the surface to the ocean bottom. This zone is further sub-divided into the photic (sunlight) and disphotic (twilight) zones where most ocean organisms live. Below these two sub-zones is the aphotic (darkness) zone. In this unit, students learn about each of the ocean zones, and identify and note animals living in each zone. They also research and keep records of the evolutionary physical features and functions that animals they study have acquired to survive in harsh open ocean habitats. -

We investigate this hypothesis by using sediment descriptions of Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) drill cores to constrain plateau subsidence histories which re¯ect mantle thermal and crustal accretionary processes. We ®nd that total plateau subsidence is comparable to that expected of normal sea¯oor but less than predictions of thermal models of hotspot-affected lithosphere. If crustal emplacement was rapid, then uncertainties in paleo-water depths allow for the anomalous subsidence predicted for plumes with only moderate temperature anomalies and volumes, comparable to the sources of modern-day hotspots such as Hawaii and Iceland. Rapid emplacement over a plume head of high temperature and volume, however, is dif®cult to reconcile with the subsidence reconstructions. An alternative possibility that reconciles low subsidence over a high-temperature, high-volume plume source is a scenario in which plateau subsidence is the superposition of (1) subsidence due to the cooling of the plume source, and (2) uplift due to prolonged crustal growth in the form of magmatic underplating. -

THESIS COMMITTEE Chairperson ii Abstract Using the polygonal finite rotation method (PFRM) in conjunction with the hotspot- ting technique, a model of Pacific absolute plate motion (APM) from 65 Ma to the present has been created. This model is based primarily on the Hawaiian-Emperor and Louisville hotspot trails but also incorporates the Cobb, Bowie, Kodiak, Foundation, Caroline, Mar- quesas and Pitcairn hotspot trails. Using this model, distinct changes in Pacific APM have been identified at 48, 27, 23, 18, 12 and 6 Ma. These changes are reflected as kinks in the linear trends of Pacific hotspot trails. The sense of motion and timing of a number of circum-Pacific tectonic events appear to be correlated with these changes in Pacific APM. With the model and discussion presented here it is suggested that Pacific hotpots are fixed with respect to one another and with respect to the mantle. [1] The plate motion of India changed dramatically between 50 and 35 Ma, with the rate of convergence between India and Asia dropping from 15 to 4 cm/yr. This change is coincident with the onset of the India-Asia collision, and with a rearrangement of plate boundaries in the Indian Ocean. On the basis of a simple model for the forces exerted upon the edges of the plate and the tractions on the base of the plate, we perform force balance calculations for the precollision and postcollision configurations. We show that the observed Euler poles for the Indian plate are well explained in terms of their locations and magnitudes if (1) the resistive force induced by mountain building in the Himalaya-Tibet area is 5–6 Â 1012 N/m, (2) the net force exerted upon the Indian plate by subduction zones is similar in magnitude to the ridge-push force (2.5 Â 1012 N/m), and (3) basal tractions exert a resisting force that is linearly proportional to the plate velocity in the hot spot reference frame. The third point implies an asthenospheric viscosity of 2–5 Â 1019 Pa s, assuming a thickness of 100–150 km. -
