University of Yangon’s centenary attracts huge gathering

CHANCELLOR Road in University of Yangon was packed with alumni and members of the public on the evening of November 29, gathering to celebrate the university’s 100th birthday. Established in December 1920, the university has survived different political upheavals as well as many social, technological and cultural trans- formations. City dwellers gathered inside the university’s grounds to visit many of the famous places in the campus. Some paid tribute to the century-old Thitpok tree aka “the old bachelor”, the Judson Church, Kantgaw forest and Convocation Hall. Many former students also visited the university’s dormitories, where many dreams were dreamt and relationships initiated. Officially the university celebrated its 100th birthday back in January with a concert, movie competition, photo exhibition and other campus-based activities. In the last week of November the campus opened its doors to the public again, asking them to celebrate – while observing social dis- tancing and wearing masks. On November 29, which is also the full moon of Tazaungmon, thousands of visitors came to see the beauty of the moon shining over the campus. The Ministry of Education urged people to stay at home after dozens of complaints were made on social media about the size of the crowds on the campus. The official celebration, to be held on December 1, will now be a virtual affair. The event will be covered by Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV). The University of Yan- gon’s Facebook page will also live-stream the celebrations. In the meantime, a group of alumni will show their respects to the 100-year old institution by walking around the outside of the campus in the early morning of December 1.
