STATIC, YET FLUCTUATING: THE EVOLUTION OF BATMAN AND HIS AUDIENCES by PERRY DUPRE DANTZLER Under the Direction of H. Calvin Thomas ABSTRACT The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history.

Michael Straczynski, Ardian Syaf, Paperback | Barnes & Noble® Superman: Earth One is a series of graphic novels written by J. Michael Straczynski and illustrated by Shane Davis. Superman: Earth One was the inaugural title of the new, ongoing graphic novel series Earth One. Writer J. Michael Straczynski said the project was a Superman: Earth One: Volume 3 come true, as writing Superman was among his plans which also included Babylon 5. Two years before its publication, Straczynski announced he had signed a contract with DC Comics. Before Straczynski's announcement, he had kept the project secret while he worked on the Red Circle characters and The Brave and the Bold. Straczynski used his experiences as a journalist to add detail to the Daily Planet environment, for example, the character Jimmy Olsencalled Jim in the books, is depicted as tougher and smarter than his mainstream counterpart. Straczynski wanted to retell the beginning of Clark Kent's transition to Superman, and explore possible alternatives to Clark becoming a superhero. Straczynski said; "he [Kent] could have been rich as an athlete, researcher, any number of things. Superman: Earth One: Volume 3 a flashback scene to when Martha Kent finishes his uniform and gives it to him as a gift, hoping he will go that way. • Crisis of Infinite Intertexts! Continuity As Adaptation in the Superman Multimedia Franchise
Crisis of Infinite Intertexts! Continuity as Adaptation in the Superman Multimedia Franchise Jack Peterson Teiwes ORCID identifier 0000-0001-8956-1602 Doctor of Philosophy November 2015 School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the PhD degree Produced on archival quality paper Abstract Since first appearing as a comic book character over three quarters of a century ago, Superman was not only the first superhero, spawning an entire genre of imitators, but also quickly became one of the most widely disseminated multi-media entertainment franchises. This achieved a degree of intergenerational cultural dissemination that far surpasses his comic book fandom. Yet despite an unprecedented degree of adaptation into other media from radio, newspaper strips, film serials, animation, feature films, video games and television, Superman’s ongoing comic books have remained in unbroken publication, developing a long and complex history of narrative renewal and reinvention. This thesis investigates the multifaceted intertextuality between the comic book portrayals of Superman and its many adaptations over the years, including how such retellings in other media have a generally stronger cultural impact, which exerts in turn an adaptive influence upon these continuing comics’ internalised narrative continuity. I shall argue that Superman comics, as a case study for the wider phenomenon in the superhero genre, demonstrate via their frequent revisions and relaunches of continuity, a process of deeply palimpsestuous self-adaptation. The Introduction positions my research methodology in relation to intertextual theory, with an emphasis on providing terminological clarity, while Chapter 1 expands into a literature review on pertinent key scholarship on adaptation studies and the comics studies field specifically.

  • Movement in a Static Medium Jasmina Ouhri
Ouhri 1 Sidekicks Grow Sideways: Movement in a Static Medium Jasmina Ouhri Honors Thesis, Spring 2012 Director: Kenneth Kidd Reader: Terry Harpold Figure 1. From All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder (2008) by Frank Miller and Jim Lee. © DC Comics. Batman and Dick Grayson in the Bat cave after Dick’s parents are murdered. “From its earliest days, the modern comic has grappled with the problem of showing motion in a static medium,” Scott McCloud writes in Understanding Comics (110). In the panel shown above (Fig. 1), artist Jim Lee uses what McCloud calls multiple images of a figure to convey movement: Robin-to-be Dick Grayson vaults backward to stand in front of Batman, leaving behind transparent images of himself that show the path of motion he has taken. Although this technique may be used to depict any character’s motion, artists most often use it to show acrobatic movements like those used by Batman’s Robins. Taking a cue from this Ouhri 2 technique’s depiction of multiple images of Robin integrated into a series, my paper will examine the role of the child sidekick in superhero comic book narratives, more specifically that of the Robin characters in the DC Comics universe. While the final figure in this progression of images is opaque, indicating permanence or unchangeability, the images leading up to it are transparent and ghost-like, indicating when and where the figure was still in motion, still capable of change. The child Robin occupies a similar conceptual space of potential for the adult Batman.
