PAUL TALALAY March 31, 1923–March 10, 2019 Elected to the NAS, 1987 Paul Talalay was a leading biomedical scientist who made important contributions in two major areas, steroid enzymology and cancer chemoprotection—the identi- fication or development of substances that help prevent the occurrence or reoccurrence of cancer. Talalay’s discovery and analysis of ketosteroid isomerase have led to important paradigms in our understanding of enzyme mechanisms. His identification and characterization of sulforaphane as an inducer of protective enzymes helped launch the development of the field of dietary chemo- Photograph courtesy of Tony Talalay Tony of Photograph courtesy protection. He was an exceptional educator, mentor, and scientific program builder who has had a dramatic influ- ence on generations of scientists. By Theresa Shapiro Talalay earned his undergraduate degree in biophysics at and Philip Cole MIT in 1944 before starting medical school at the Univer- sity of Chicago; he transferred to Yale and received his M.D. degree in 1948. He completed his training with a urology-focused residency in surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital before joining the University of Chicago faculty in 1951. He moved to the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1963 to become director of its department of pharma- cology and remained on the Hopkins faculty for the rest of his life. Paul Talalay was the youngest of the four sons of Joseph and Sophie Talalay. -

3/14/2019 Paul Talalay, researcher who found cancer-preventing qualities in broccoli, dies at 95 - The Washington Post The Washington Post Obituaries Paul Talalay, researcher who found cancer-preventing qualities in broccoli, dies at 95 By Emily Langer March 13 at 7:26 AM Paul Talalay, a pharmacologist who spearheaded research in the 1990s that identified the cancer-preventing properties of a compound found in broccoli, a discovery that was credited with bringing new scientific attention to ways of combating cancer before it takes hold, died March 10 at his home in Baltimore. He was 95. The cause was congestive heart failure, said his daughter Susan Talalay. Dr. Talalay, who was long associated with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, spent the first decades of his career as an enzymologist, focused in particular on the proteins that interact with testosterone. He had encountered his first cancer patient in medical school and, by the 1980s, had begun to cultivate a “daring thought that cancers of all sorts might actually be preventable,” said Jed Fahey, who joined Dr. Talalay’s lab in 1993 and is today a professor at the Johns Hopkins division of clinical pharmacology. Dr. Talalay oversaw research that in the 1990s revealed intriguing qualities of sulforaphane, a compound found in broccoli and in even greater quantities in broccoli sprouts. When ingested, sulforaphane binds to a protein inside cells, said Philip A. Cole, a professor at Harvard Medical School and former student of Dr. Talalay’s. That event sparks the increased production of enzymes that help cells resist toxic substances, including carcinogens. -
