INTRODUCTION Articles are generally by invitation and written by leading experts with an appeal not only to ophthalmologists and vision researchers but also to those interested in molecular biology, neuroscience, physiology and genetics. The journal covers all aspects of research on the eye, including topics pertaining to the retina, pigment epithelial layer, cornea, tears, lacrimal glands, aqueous humour, iris, ciliary body, trabeculum, lens, vitreous humour and diseases such as dry-eye, inflammation, keratoconus, corneal dystrophy, glaucoma, diabetes, age-related macular degeneration and cataract. The primary aim of PRER is to highlight and focus on a particular research topic of current high interest. Articles are by definition extensive being at least 15 printed pages. Articles in PRER are generally overview-type articles concentrating on an area of the expertise of the author/authors. Articles might include important and new developments in a field, new theories and new views or twists on standard subjects which could point the way to further exciting research in the concluding "Future Directions" section of the article Articles can include unpublished data with appropriate necessary information. Authors are encouraged to discuss the subject matter in a manner that is not always possible in standard scientific publications, theorizing, philosophising and summarizing if necessary. It is to remembered, however, that the authors should highlight critical contributions from all laboratories, not only their own. Articles are, by definition, scholarly and authoritative yet "reader friendly". They should be accessible and understandable to investigators in other research areas. To achieve this, authors are encouraged to include appropriate diagrams, figures and cartoons. Cited references should be reasonable in number and selective.
