None of those who were to be concerned in the events of that day could lay claim to having had a premonition of disaster. (With the exception, that is, of Mrs Packer of 47, Wilbraham Crescent, who specialized in premonitions, and who always described at great length afterwards the peculiar forebodings and tremors that had beset her. But Mrs Packer at No. 47, was so far away from No. 19, and so little concerned with the happenings there, that it seemed unnecessary for her to have had a premonition at all.) At the Cavendish Secretarial and Typewriting Bureau, Principal, Miss K. Martindale, September 9th had been a dull day, a day of routine. The telephone rang, typewriters clicked, the pressure of business was average, neither above nor below its usual volume. None of it was particularly interesting. Up till 2.35, September 9th might have been a day like any other day. At 2.35 Miss Martindale’s buzzer went, and Edna Brent in the outer office answered it in her usual breathy and slightly nasal voice, as she manoeuvred a toffee along the line of her jaw. ‘Yes, Miss Martindale?’ ‘Now, Edna—that is not the way I’ve told you to speak when answering the telephone. THEMATIC INTERCONNECTIVITY AS AN INNATE MUSICAL QUALITY: AN INVESTIGATION OF JANDEK’S “EUROPEAN JEWEL” GUITAR RIFFS NICOLE A MARCHESSEAU A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO MAY 2014 © NICOLE A MARCHESSEAU, 2014 Abstract This dissertation is divided into two main areas. The first of these explores Jandek-related discourse and contextualizes the project. Also discussed is the interconnectivity that runs through the project through the self-citation of various lyrical, visual, and musical themes. The second main component of this dissertation explores one of these musical themes in detail: the guitar riffs heard in the “European Jewel” song-set and the transmigration/migration of the riff material used in the song to other non-“European Jewel” tracks. Jandek is often described in related discourse as an “outsider musician.” A significant point of discussion in the first area of this dissertation is the outsider music genre as it relates to Jandek. In part, this dissertation responds to an article by Martin James and Mitzi Waltz which was printed in the periodical Popular Music where it was suggested that the marketing of a musician as an outsider risks diminishing the “innate qualities” of the so-called outsider musicians’ works.1 While the outsider label is in itself problematic—this is discussed at length in Chapter Two—the analysis which comprises the second half of this dissertation delves into self- citation and thematic interconnection as innate qualities within the project. -

PRAISE FOR Brave Surrender I so love Kim’s heart for worship and her passion to help others encounter the love and redemption of the Father. Brave Surrender is a book of beautiful truth and personal stories that will be an encouragement and inspiration to all who read it. Kari Jobe God had a great surprise and gift for the church when He cre- ated Kim Walker- Smith’s voice. She sings with a passion and abandon unlike any other I’ve known. However, this kind of freedom doesn’t come without struggle, without pain, or with- out a fight. Thank you, Kim, for being so honest and open with your story. I know this book will be a lifeline to so many in their own journey of faith. Chris Tomlin What most people know about Kim Walker- Smith is what they’ve experienced as they’ve heard her lead worship on an album or on stage. Countless numbers of people have been impacted by her voice and the anointing on her life. But what most may not know is the woman behind the voice— the daugh- ter, mother, wife, friend, preacher, and leader I’ve been privi- leged to know since she was eighteen. What has most impressed me is not her ability to lead worship, but her willingness and hunger to embrace growth and allow God to shape her life. Through mountains and valleys, in hard times and good times, she has consistently positioned herself in full surrender to God. -

We pass framed pictures and posters. All of the people in the pictures look between 16-19. INSERT - PICTURES - BILL (hefty, tattered, white guy with black hair) leans on a guitar case with a beer in his hand. TODD (5'10" with a very average build and short brown hair) stands next to him and smiles with his hands in his pockets. Two other band mates stand and pose, one with a guitar strapped to his back and the other sits behind the drum kit. - Todd poses in the middle of an Philadelphia street on a one speed commuter bike. SYDNEY (a brunette with smooth pale skin and round facial features, poses in a half squat in front of him with her arms out. ERIC (a pale skinny male with short frizzy brown hair, hugs Todd's waist. - Bill stands in a record store with "Electric warrior" by T. Rex on display, happy to have found it. - Bill, Todd, and two band mates, KEN and REED, play in a small basement. Bill leans into a microphone, Todd plays bass. There is a crowd of elated teenagers who enjoy the music. Eric sits on an amp behind the band sipping a beer. - A shot that looks over a small cement backyard with a cloud cigarette smoke hangs above a crowd of teenagers stand and converse. Sydney stands in the corner with two girls, LILY and KENNEDY. -

Of Wanders and Lust A Novel by Luis Soto-Ortiz (a.k.a. Popmartfan) Version 1.0 (Abridged) Dear Reader, I began writing this novel in April 2017. The challenge I imposed on myself was to write a short story or play where the characters are musicians and what they say comes from their own lyrics. I did not know what the plot would be about but nevertheless I embarked on this project with enthusiasm. Eventually some themes came to my mind and I slowly developed them into different scenarios. This project grew to become the short novel that you are about to read. There are many relevant themes in this novel, some of them sad and others uplifting. You will see a group of musicians traveling together to different cities who, despite their different political and religious beliefs, they nevertheless stay together and help each other overcome difficult situations. You will see that the novel has several protagonists (heroes and heroines) which I will let you figure out who they are. You might even identify and relate to some of the characters. Although there are very serious themes that the novel touches upon, there are also many lighthearted moments which I hope will make you laugh or at least bring a smile to your face. I do not mean to insult anyone by the jokes or events depicted in the novel. I am not planning on making any money from this novel because I am using lyrics that are copyrighted. I do hope that by reading this novel you become a better person, someone who is more sensitive and appreciative of cultural, political and gender differences. -
