Di certo la loro hit “Just an Illusion” è stata magica (indimenticabili i coretti “could it be that” e i vocalizzi di Leee), così come grandi emozioni le ha date l’altra hit mondiale “Music and lights”, slow-dance dal testo sensuale e provocante. .

STRUCTURAL CHANGE IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY: THE EVOLVING ROLE OF THE MUSICIAN RICHARD JAMES BURGESS A submission presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Glamorgan/Prifysgol Morgannwg for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2010 ii Copyright © 2010 by Richard James Burgess All Rights Reserved ii 1 Structural Change in the Music Industry The Evolving Role of the Musician Abstract The recording industry is little more than one hundred years old. In its short history there have been many changes that have redefined roles, enabled fortunes to be built and caused some to be dissipated. Recording and delivery formats have gone through fundamental conceptual developments and each technological transformation has generated both positive and negative effects. Over the past fifteen years technology has triggered yet another large-scale and protracted revision of the business model, and this adjustment has been exacerbated by two serious economic downturns. This dissertation references the author’s career to provide context and corroboration for the arguments herein. It synthesizes salient constants from more than forty years’ empirical evidence, addresses industry rhetoric and offers methodologies for musicians with examples, analyses, and codifications of relevant elements of the business. The economic asymmetry of the system that exploits musicians’ work can now be rebalanced. Ironically, the technologies that triggered the industry downturn now provide creative entities with mechanisms for redress. This is a propitious time for ontologically reexamining music business realities to determine what is axiological as opposed to simply historical axiom. The primary objective herein is to contribute to the understanding of applied fundamentals, the rules of engagement that enable aspirants and professionals alike to survive and thrive in this dynamic and capricious vocation.

Hamanaka Caught the John Watson Trio over the pond with Miles Danso, bass, Louie Palmer (who studied at Berkelee), drums at The Langham, [at 1C Portland Place, London W1B, 1JA, (207)636- The Jazz Culture, VI:25 1 1000] is an elegant hotel with high ceilings and huge windows. Like many of the larger hotels, the Langham has several food and beverage outlets, a bar like a cigar bar, the Palm Court, which is where the John Watson Trio holds forth weekends and carries on the long tradition of jazz piano trios. The Palm Court has a large selection of champagne, wines and cocktails, and an excellent continental menu with lots of side dishes, such as crusted prawns, a wide variety of vegetable sides and artful desserts. The restaurant won the Best Afternoon Tea Award in 2010 and rates 161 out of 10,000 venues in London. The ceiling of the Palm Court is about four stories high and there is a nightclub feel, projected by 25-foot Chinese red chandeliers with red velvet curtains, pillars in the room and a grand piano where the John Watson Trio plays. Mr. Watson also produces shows, besides being musical director at the Langham. Once a month, he is doing a jazz dinner show at the Haven Bar & Grill, www.haven- bistro.co.uk, featuring established artists on the London jazz scene each month.

The history of UK black music A soundtrack to everyone’s lives “FLASHBACK is more than a passion for me, I have existed, lived and performed in FLASHBACK.” Leee John www.fl ashbackproject.com www.fl ashbackprojectuk.com An introduction Imagination, my group from the 80’s, were one of the most popular brit soul funk groups to come out of the UK with hits like Body Talk, Just An Illusion and Music And Lights, to name but a few. My inspiration for music came from the history of so many pioneers from America; the Afro-Caribbean and Asian infl uences. In the UK, I discovered an industry that was not an easy road for people of colour. However, they managed to uplift themselves beyond those issues and share their legacy of music to the world. The infl uences and achievements of these people far out-merit the awards themselves. Preparing for this fi lm documentary opened the doorway to the lives of so many musical artists, DJ’s, record producers, writers and musical icons who infl uenced not just the UK, but the world. FLASHBACK highlights through our timeline a wealth of knowledge and discovery. www.fl ashbackprojectuk.com About Flashback FLASHBACK is a universal journey that takes us from the turn of the 20th century right up to present day. FLASHBACK shows the development of black music in the UK from the early days of post war Britain, through cultural and political evolution to our present day multicultural society. The infl ux of foreign cultures greatly infl uenced and reshaped music, art and culture in the UK.
