  • Mcconnell Announces Senate Republican Committee Assignments for the 117Th Congress
For Immediate Release, Wednesday, February 3, 2021 Contacts: David Popp, Doug Andres Robert Steurer, Stephanie Penn McConnell Announces Senate Republican Committee Assignments for the 117th Congress Praises Senators Crapo and Tim Scott for their work on the Committee on Committees WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following the 50-50 power-sharing agreement finalized earlier today, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced the Senate Republican Conference Committee Assignments for the 117th Congress. Leader McConnell once again selected Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID) to chair the Senate Republicans’ Committee on Committees, the panel responsible for committee assignments for the 117th Congress. This is the ninth consecutive Congress in which Senate leadership has asked Crapo to lead this important task among Senate Republicans. Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) assisted in the committee selection process as he did in the previous three Congresses. “I want to thank Mike and Tim for their work. They have both earned the trust of our colleagues in the Republican Conference by effectively leading these important negotiations in years past and this year was no different. Their trust and experience was especially important as we enter a power-sharing agreement with Democrats and prepare for equal representation on committees,” McConnell said. “I am very grateful for their work.” “I appreciate Leader McConnell’s continued trust in having me lead the important work of the Committee on Committees,” said Senator Crapo. “Americans elected an evenly-split Senate, and working together to achieve policy solutions will be critical in continuing to advance meaningful legislation impacting all Americans. Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit our nation, our economy was the strongest it has ever been.

The innovative programs established in this bill support currently operating nuclear reactors and the next generation of reactor technologies. ANIA would direct the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to continue to modernize its regulatory review processes. Efficiencies in the environmental review process and reviewing new license applications will help enable nuclear energy to deploy at a rapid enough scale to support decarbonization. In addition, preemptively reviewing U.S. Department of Energy sites for demonstration reactors can help companies partner with the National Labs to test out innovative concepts, including advanced methods of manufacturing and construction. Awarding prizes to first mover companies supports competition, but also recognizes the challenges of being first through the licensing process when using innovative technologies. The targeted credit program to preserve the existing nuclear fleet, the foundation of our nation’s low carbon electricity, allows plants to continue decreasing operating costs without prematurely shutting down. Advanced nuclear, due to its dispatchable and high temperature attributes, can also be used to decarbonize other energy sectors.

We are disappointed that this controversial and discriminatory proposal has resurfaced, as our industry has consistently supported increasing HTF revenue through equitable increases to existing user fees. The inclusion of such a divisive policy in the next surface transportation reauthorization would instantly eliminate our support for the bill and likely destroy any hope for its passage. Proponents of a truck-only VMT have insinuated that truckers don’t pay their fair share into the HTF. This is preposterous. Not only is the trucking industry currently paying more than its fair share, a report by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found HTF revenues derived from motor carriers through the heavy-vehicle and tire taxes will increase over the next decade.1 Between the current diesel tax and these supplemental taxes that other highway users do not pay, the trucking industry is estimated to increase its contributions to the HTF over the same period of time.

Wyden and Crapo and Reps. Pallone, McMorris-Rodgers, Neal, and Brady: On behalf of the undersigned, we write to convey our concerns with the implementation of the pending Medicare 15% payment differential for services furnished by physical therapist assistants (PTA) and occupational therapy assistants (OTA) beginning on Jan. 1, 2022. This 15% cut compounds significant payment reductions already imposed on rehabilitation therapy and will have a pervasive and pernicious impact on our patients. The rehabilitation therapy sector is still recovering from the devasting impact of COVID-19 on patients and staff as we continue to provide services during the public health emergency (PHE). Especially early in the pandemic, access to care was curtailed. The AMA reported the early pandemic’s effect on rehab therapy as among the hardest hit among the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule specialties, with up to a 34% drop in spending for services.

As your Committee has jurisdiction over this language that has previously been included in drug pricing legislation in both houses of Congress, including the Prescription Drug Pricing Reduction Act (PDPRA) of 2019, we urge your swift inclusion of this pay-for in any upcoming infrastructure package. NCPA represents America’s community pharmacists, including more than 21,000 independent community pharmacies. Together, our members represent a $74 billion health care marketplace, employ approximately 250,000 individuals, and provide an expanding set of health care services to millions of patients every day. Our members are small business owners who are among America’s most accessible health care providers, often serving as the only pharmacy in many rural and urban medically underserved areas. For years, PBMs have been playing spread pricing games, contributing
