Celebrating Years of Excellence 2019 Convention Yearbook Highlighting the accomplishments of students and adutls from all convention locations: Atlanta Dallas Denver Louisville Memphis Nashville Orlando Visalia The Great “I AM” This weekend, many of you will be giving lessons based on this special verse, Exodus 3:14. You are, by now, familiar with the back story. Moses, having tried to help his people by striking dead one of the Egyptians that was keeping his people in slavery, was ridiculed for this by his own people. He fled the country and went to Midian. We cannot know what was in his mind, but I believe that he was licking his wounds, so to speak. I believe he was thinking, “They don’t want my help, so I’ll just leave.” Moses met and married a woman of that country, had children with her, and he served her father, who was the priest of Midian by tending his flocks. The man that God created to save His people from bondage had become a herdsman. Moses was a long way from the role that he had been created for by God. One day, Moses saw a bush that was burning but not burning up, and this is where the famous conversation happened in which God reminded Moses of what his role in this life was to be. Moses had many insecurities, and he wanted to know how the people would know he was being sent from God. God said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has send me to you’” (Exodus 3:14). So, what is so important about this verse? Why is God being I AM so important to us today? We live in a very uncertain world where tragic events happen every day. To someone who doesn’t believe in God, this is very scary because they believe that this life is all there is. Even to Christians, it is alarming because we care so much about our friends and family. Yet, we have reason to be comforted about what happens in this world. We have I AM as our God, and He is ultimately in control of all. When this life is over, if we have strived to serve and obey His will as He has revealed it to us through His word, we will live with Him forever in heaven. In telling Moses to tell His people that I AM has sent you, God was saying, “No matter what happens to you in this life, you belong to me. I AM the One who created you.” In order to be the Christian that God has created you to be, to fulfill the role that He has for you, it is necessary that you understand to Whom you belong. You and I belong to the Great I AM. Game Changer For your bible classes Thank you for using YOUR GIFTS for His glory You believe in leadership, service and using your gifts for His glory. Whether you’re a high school student, parent, youth worker, minister or elder, you are part of Lads 2 Leaders because you believe it prepares youth and congregations for a life of work in His kingdom. At Freed-Hardeman University, we believe in Lads 2 Leaders, and we believe in extending that same kind of training through one of the most transitional times in a young person’s life: college. FHU students engage in a thoroughly Christian education in a one-of-a-kind environment permeated by a shared belief and purpose. Not only are they taught by a faculty comprised wholly of Christians, they also are surrounded by a student body where more than 80% are members of the church of Christ. This atmosphere, combined with excellent academic programs (with job placement and graduate school acceptance rates far above the national average), proves the value of a Christian education. Whatever your role this weekend, thank you for encouraging others for His glory. Sincerely, David R.
