Winnipeg established a Jets/Thrashers franchise record for fewest games to reach the 70-point mark in a season (52 GP), eclipsing the previous low of 53 set in 2017-18 (31-13-9, 71 points). * The Jets earned their seventh consecutive victory at Bell MTS Place, tied with the Sharks for longest active home win streak in the NHL .The franchise record for longest regular-season home win streak is nine games, a mark set from March 2 – April 7, 2018. * Jack Roslovic (3-1—4) scored the first hat trick of his NHL career and became the third Jets player to record at least one three-goal performance this season, joining Patrik Laine (3x) and Nikolaj Ehlers (2x). Winnipeg’s six combined hat tricks in 2018-19 are tied for the most among all 31 teams (w/ PIT). DID YOU KNOW? Winnipeg established a Jets/Thrashers franchise record for most goals in any period of a regular-season game, eclipsing the previous mark of five last achieved in the opening frame on March 15, 2018 (6-2 W vs. CHI). The original Winnipeg Jets scored six goals in a period on two occasions – during the second stanza on Nov. 9, 1984 (7-5 W vs. VAN) and in the final frame on Oct. 30, 1988 (8-4 W vs. LAK). KUCHEROV REACHES 80-POINT MARK Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov (22-58—80 in 52 GP) collected an assist to become the first player to reach the 80-point mark this season. He established a franchise record for fewest personal games required to reach the 80-point mark in a season, eclipsing the previous low of 60 contests set by Vincent Lecavalier in 2006-07 (39-41—80). * Kucherov was also the first player to 80 points in 2017-18; it marked the first instance of a player being the first in the NHL to reach the 80-point mark in consecutive seasons since 2013- 14 and 2014-15, when Sidney Crosby achieved the feat. Wayne Gretzky owns the longest such streak in League history, being the first to 80 points in seven consecutive seasons from 1981-82 to 1987-88. ISLANDERS PAD LEAD ATOP METROPOLITAN DIVISION Ryan Pulock (0-3—3) factored on all three third-period goals to help the Metropolitan-Division leading Islanders (30-15-6, 66 points) to their 30th victory on the season. New York, which improved to 5-0-2 over the last seven games, became the third Eastern Conference club (Lightning: 39 and Maple Leafs: 31) and first Metropolitan team to reach the mark. * The 2018-19 campaign marks the eighth instance in franchise history in which the Islanders were the first team in their division to hit the 30-win mark. FLYERS, HART RALLY TO EXTEND WIN STREAKS Philadelphia overcame a 4-2 deficit in the third period and Nolan Patrick scored at 2:01 of overtime as the Flyers extended their win streak to seven games, the longest active run in the NHL. Philadelphia recorded a win streak of at least seven games for the first time since Nov. 27 – Dec. 14, 2016 (10-0-0). * Carter Hart (40 saves) improved to 6-0-0 in his last six appearances dating to Jan. 14 (2.63 GAA, .926 SV%). Hart (born Aug. 13, 1998) became the sixth different goaltender in NHL history to record a personal win streak of at least six games before celebrating his 21st birthday and first since Montreal’s Carey Price from March 20 – April 5, 2008 (7-0-0). * Hart is three games shy of matching the longest personal win streak in franchise history by a rookie goaltender, a mark set by Pelle Lindbergh from Dec. 22, 1982 – Feb. 10, 1983 (9-0-0). HOLLAND PASSES ADAMS FOR MOST WINS BY A RED WINGS GENERAL MANAGER Ken Holland earned his 914th career regular-season win as an NHL general manager (all w/ DET) and moved past Jack Adams (913) for the most in Red Wings franchise history. * Adams served as general manager of the Cougars, Falcons and Red Wings from May 14, 1927 – April 26, 1962, compiling a record of 913-726-355 (2,181 points) across 1,994 career regular-season games. Only five general managers in NHL history have accumulated more career regular-season wins than Holland and Adams: David Poile (1,364), Glen Sather (1,319), Lou Lamoriello (1,241), Harry Sinden (1,170) and Cliff Fletcher (953). * Holland is one of seven active general managers who sit atop their current franchise’s all-time wins list, and the only one to achieve the feat with an Original Six club. The others: Poile (770 w/ NSH), Doug Wilson (675 w/ SJS), Bob Murray (445 w/ ANA) , Dale Tallon (262 w/ FA) , Jarmo Kekalainen (262 w/ CBJ) and George McPhee (80 w/ VGK). ALSO OF NOTE Other highlights from Saturday’s 13-game slate: * Brent Burns (1-1—2), who leads all defensemen in scoring this season with 10-47—57 this season, scored his 13th career overtime goal to move into a tie with Scott Niedermayer for the most such goals by a blueliner in NHL history. * Blues forward Ryan O’Reilly extended his point streak to seven games (3-7—10) dating to Jan. 14 at WSH. He became the fifth Blues player in franchise history to record multiple point streaks of seven or more games in his first season with the club. The last player to accomplish the feat was Doug Weight (9 GP and 7 GP in 2001-02). * Oilers captain Connor McDavid (1-1—2) scored his team-leading 30th goal of the season (30-45—75 in 50 GP). He became the second Oilers player in last 30 years (since 1988-89) to require 50 or fewer personal games to reach the 30-goal mark in a season. The other: Jimmy Carson in 1988-89 (38 GP). * Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser scored the game-winning goal for the second time in as many days (also Feb. 1 vs. TOR). He became the second blueliner in franchise history to score a game-winning goal in consecutive days, joining Anders Eriksson from Dec. 22-23, 1997. There have been eight instances of an NHL team winning a game on the same day an NFL team based in the same city (or within close geographic proximity) captured the Super Bowl; Boston and New England can accomplish the feat for a third time on Sunday. * The Capitals (17-9-2, 36 points) have earned 17 all-time wins in games taking place on Super Bowl Sunday, trailing only the Canadiens (19-11-3, 41 points) for the most in NHL history. The Bruins (13-4-2, 28 points) have earned 13 all-time wins on Super Bowl Sunday, tied for the third-most in League history. * Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has scored 10 career goals in games taking place on Super Bowl Sunday (10-4—14 in 11 GP), trailing only Phil Esposito (16-16—32 in 12 GP) for the most in NHL history. Ovechkin has collected 14 career points in games taking place on Super Bowl Sunday, the fourth-most in NHL history; teammate Nicklas Backstrom, meanwhile, ranks tied for sixth place with 12 points (2-10—12 in 10 GP). .

Regarded as one of the three kings of the Oilers 1980s dynasty, alongside Wayne GretzKy and MarK Messier, Lowe won 6 Stanley Cups within his playing career. He also managed to be a seven-time NHL All-Star beyond being the recipient of 1990's King Clancy Memorial Trophy. While a 19-year playing career in the NHL would be enough for most players, Kevin Lowe went on to join the Oilers staff as an assistant coach in 1998. He transitioned into a head coach the following year, and then became the team's general manager in 2000. Still employed by the Oilers, Lowe is currently the Vice Kevin Lowe - NHL All Star, Stanley Cup Winner & Executive Chairman of the Oilers Entertainment Group. Lowe has also been involved with interesting projects over the years outside of hockey. One such project is consulting for Vivo Resorts, an all-suite beachfront resort in Puerto Escondido, Mexico. Vivo is the brainchild of another notable pro athlete, former World Cup downhill sKi champion and Olympian Cary Mullen of Canada. When speaKing with Lowe by phone, I asKed him about his careers both on and off the ice, in addition to how Mexico first became part of his life.

    1978-1979 Coach: Glen Sather EDMONTON Record: 48-30-2, 98 points OILERS Finish: 1st, League Playoffs: Lost in Finals to Winnipeg For the first time in their seven seasons in the WHA, the Oilers were the class of the league, running away with the regular-season crown with 48 wins and 98 points. Much credit goes to Wayne Gretzky, who came to the Oilers on November 2, 1978, purchased from Indianapolis along with Peter Driscoll and Ed Mio. The skinny 18-year old Gretzky showed he was very much worthy of his reputation, finishing strong with 46 goals, 110 points, and the league’s Rookie of the Year award. However, surrounding Gretzky was a strong, solid team ably coached by Glen Sather. Four other Oilers scored 30 goals (Blair MacDonald 34, Ron Chipperfield 32, Brett Callighen and Stan Weir with 31), as the Oilers led the league with 340 goals. On the blueline were Al Hamilton (healthy for the first time in years who played in all 80 games), Dave Langevin, Joe Micheletti and Paul Shmyr. Should a player get past the Edmonton defense, big Dave Dryden posed a formidable barrier in goal. Dryden had his best season as a professional, winning 41 games with a 2.89 average, and sharing the league lead with three shutouts. In the playoffs, the Oilers fought off the Whalers in seven games, but fell to the veteran Jets in the final round. Despite the disappointing finish to a fine season, the Oilers would see greater glory in the NHL during the 1980s.
