From the late 1940s until the artist's death in Captiva, Florida in 2008, Rauschenberg worked in a wide range of subjects, styles, materials, and techniques. As demonstrated in this collection, he had a lifelong commitment to collaboration, working extensively with performers, printers, writers, artists, and artisans from around the world. Scope and Content The Photograph Collection contains photographic prints, slides, and Abstract: negatives shot primarily by Robert Rauschenberg's studio assistants, friends, and professional photographers. Spanning from 1927 to 2015, with a few early twentieth-century family photographs, the collection documents the artist's personal life, studio activities, performances, exhibitions, special projects, and events he attended. Candid and posed portraits, including many by notable photographers, portray the artist throughout his life and chronicle his many connections with collaborators, friends, and family. The collection also includes a small series of unidentified material. Administrative Information Provenance: The majority of the collection was created and assembled by the Robert Rauschenberg Studio during the artist's lifetime and formally Page 1 deposited in the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Archives in 2016. Additional photographic documentation acquired by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation has and will continue to be added to the collection.
