The Viking Journal

Volume 2, Issue 4

Cover by: Zohra, Grade 8 fg 2 Editors’ Message The Pros And Cons Of

Hey Cedarbrook! We are so pleased to announce that our team has accomplished the fourth issue of the Viking Journal. The team has put a lot of effort into creating this newspaper. We have a lot of articles in this issue and this one has been made by the Editors-in-Chief. The Look at Fortnite was very enjoyable to write and we are satisfied with the final copy. This article is about the pros and cons of Fortnite. Pros - Vijay There are a lot of games out there that are really good that kids play, cost a lot of money. Fortnite is a FREE game that you can play with your friends anytime, anywhere. You can talk, interact and play with your friends in Fortnite. For example, if you really want to talk with your friends and interact with them, you can play Fortnite. Fortnite is full of suspense and excitement, Fortnite even has emotes that you can perform during games to express yourself. Therefore, this game is also a great socializing opportunity. These are some pros of why Fortnite is such a good game. And of course, you also have to acknowledge the cons below before you make a solid and firm decision.

Cons - Anuhesh This may look like a fun and exciting game, but it can be very addicting. In June, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that gaming disorder ( addiction ) is a mental health problem. Second of all, 68.8% of all players spend about $90 on Fortnite. One shocking incident was when a UK dad let his 12-year old son use his credit card to make purchases on Fortnite. However, one purchase later turned into 81 different purchases, racking up a total of $930! The cross dad blamed Epic Games for accepting so many transactions in 72 hours. Third of all, the ability to communicate online while playing these games can result in incidents of online bullying, the use of inappropriate language and abuse. This is a message to all parents out there that have a child playing Fortnite. Playing Fortnite isn’t good or bad, just know that there have to be boundaries of when it comes to how long you should play and how you play. 3 The Ones In Charge

By: Mahisa & Narsin -Special Features Team

Hey everyone, Do you want to know more about the ones in charge of Newspaper Club? Like the leaders, or who the responsible ones are? Well, if you do, then you should keep reading. We have asked #Canto to answer four questions about Newspaper Club.

Now, you're probably wondering who is Canto? Canto is Mme Sutanto & Mr. Cathcart. They are the Grade 6 EXtended#CANTO French teachers. You might know them from some clubs. Mme Sutanto leads Dance Club for Grades 3 and 4 with three amazing student leaders, while Mr. Cathcart leads Board Games club every Tuesday!

Nasrin: “Why did you decide to create the Newspaper Club?” Mr. Cathcart: “Madame Sutanto and I wanted to do something together. I really like reading and writing and I thought it would be a great way to show the community our school’s talents.”

Mahisa: “Who gave you the idea to create this club?” Mme Sutanto: “Mr.Cathcart and I came up with the idea of starting a Newspaper Club a few years ago. We love seeing students take charge and express themselves and what better platform than students to lead the newspaper. We have many sports clubs at Cedarbrook and we felt like there was a group of students that could benefit from a club where they can express themselves. This was the reason for the Newspaper club.”

Nasrin: “What are some of the teams in the Newspaper Club?” Mme Sutanto: “Our newspaper club had a rigorous application process. This has helped us decide, our editors and chiefs as well as editors for the Sports team, Special Features Team, Art and Layout Team, and News Team.”

Mahisa: “What is the main idea/purpose of having this club?” Mr. Cathcart: “I see it as giving students more confidence and become better writers.”

Well, here it is, The Ones In Charge of Newspaper Club (aka the leaders/the responsible ones). Keep your eyes open for the next issue of “The Viking Journal.” 4 Valentine's Day By: Ali & Dhiyana - News Team

March is National Reading Month! It is recommended that all students should read 15 to 20 minutes a day or even more. Many students may not enjoy reading as much as others, but we all have gotten lost in a book, flipping quickly to the next page with suspense on what will happen next. There are also many benefits to reading. It can improve your concentration as well as your memory. It also expands your vocabulary and writing skills. Lastly, it can reduce stress. What are Food Drives? Food Drives are practically “banks” that save food that has been donated from people, and give to people in local communities who are in need. Example: The Daily Bread Food Bank.

The Daily Bread Food Bank, is an organization that uses food that has been donated, and they have been working to change the way people think about poverty. There are many amazing employees and volunteers who help and work at the Daily Bread Food Bank. Cedarbrook has been trying to donate food to the Daily Bread Food Bank by asking students to donate! How, you ask? Well, there will be, or should be boxes near the entrance of our school, which should say “Daily Bread Food Bank” on them.

M. Cathcart’s and Mme.Sutanto’s classes, are going to the Daily Bread Food Bank on Tuesday, April 23, 2019. These two classes will be learning about what happens when we donate, and how it will impact people! This is an amazing chance to learn how employees and vounteers at DBFB contribute to change. This also gives the students a chance to see how hard

or “easy” it is when working at a food bank. If you would like to donate food to Daily Bread Food Bank, listen to the announcements! The Grade Sixes will be collecting non-perishable items from the Cedabrook community, particularly these items: MEALS IN A TIN/BOX (Kraft dinner, stews) PASTA and PASTA SAUCE BABY FORMULA CANNED SOUP Listen to the announcements for more information! 10 TORONTO NEWS: MARCELLA ZOIA & HWY 400 - 70 CAR COLLISION By: Sharabi & Nuha - News Team

IRRESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR - TORONTO WOMAN IN CHARGED A 19 year old girl was caught throwing a chair off a balcony down several floors onto the highway. She arrived at court on Wednesday, February 13, 2019. She was charged with mischief, however, she was able to bail herself out by paying $2000 and she demanded to live under the same roof with her mother. She posted a YouTube video during the toss and was apparently dared by a woman not shown on camera. Police still accuse the girl since she had the option to resist and not engage in the act. The chair was tossed off the balcony of a downtown condominium and fell down several floors. Fortunately, the chair didn’t cause harm to anyone. Toronto police have not publicly released the name of the woman holding the camera and challenging the dare. However, even if it was a dare, she still had the option to resist. So does everyone when presented with a dare. Every day we make choices filled with low and high-quality decisions, but every choice we make is for a reason. We make multiple alternatives every day about various topics, for instance, amusement, appearance, safety and more. However, low-quality decisions have consequences. Such as, when she was dropping the chair, she might have felt agitated and/or committed in the act. But, little did she know, her consequence would be getting charged/arrested for mischief. Therefore, this tells us why we should always think twice before giving into an act. See the full video here: https://youtu.be/863mw7WcPNM

HWY 400: 70 CAR COLLISION On February 25, 2019, on Highway 400 near Barrie and Innisfil, there was a 70 car collision that occurred due to heavy wind pressure and icy roads. What happened was that, suddenly, 1 car slowed down causing the car behind to collide in the bumper of the car. As expected, many other cars collided into the bumper of the other in front. We personally believe it was an extremely shocking matter on how the number of cars involved in the collision, was able to reach numbers as high as 70. Even with cars, fortunately, only minor injuries were caused. Remember Cedarbrook, regularly make safety one of your first priorities. This experience was outstanding to the students, and they said “ it's out of this world and it was an absolutely astonishing trip''. This kind of trip is for classes who want to learn about going to Mars and coming back. This mission couldn’t be successfully completed without proper teamwork. If you work together you will have a successful mission and actually enjoy the experience. The storyline was set in 2072 when humans find a way to travel to Mars. There were two teams involved in this mission, one team would be on the spacecraft and one on Mars control center. The new astronauts were going to Mars for research and to change the other astronauts at Mars control center were missing that nice and juicy McDonald’s burgers and French fries from home sweet Earth, even though they were vegetarian for about 4-6 years!!

The classes switched, the girls from one class switched with the other girls in the other class. This was because the teachers wanted to see if their students could work independently and work well with each other. All four teams did the mission successful within the time limit. But towards the end one student suffered from radiation poisoning and had to get help from the medical support team. This was an example of how the teams assisted each other.

Each student was assigned a job which is involved in the Mission to Mars. The jobs were: Communications, Data, Navigation, Probe, Life Support, Isolation, Medical, Remote and Media.

This was an amazing trip and we would recommend this to all the classes out in this world because it's a teamwork building lesson. 12 By: Angelina T. & Fareha - Guest Contributors are cartoons that originate in Japan. What makes anime stand out is the unique art style it has. Anime is like a more
