ABSTRACT The specific concept of G. geckoides was initially ascertained based on a topotypical sample from Salvador, Bahia. Geographic differentiation was studied through the analysis of two meristic characters (tubercles in a paramedian row and fourth toe lamellae) and color pattern of 327 specimens from 23 localities. It is shown that the population from the southernmost locality, Mucugê, is markedly divergent in all characters studied. A Holocene refuge model is proposed to explain the pattern. A decision about the rank to be attributed to the Mucugê population is deferred until more detailed sampling is effected and molecular methods are applied. We studied the ecology of a K. calcarata population in a remnant of Atlantic Forest in Brazil and evaluated lizards’ body temperatures, stomach content, activity time, body measurements, and reproduction stage. We tested whether: 1) body temperature was influenced by substrate or air temperatures, 2) diet composition varied according to age and sex, and 3) there was sexual dimorphism in body size and bauplan (morphology). Lizards were more active during the hottest hours of the day, commonly in the litter or fallen logs. Body temperatures were influenced more by substrate temperatures than by air temperatures. Diet was composed mainly of arthropods, with Orthoptera and Araneae as the most important categories (numerically and volumetrically). Diet composition was similar between sexes, but varied ontogenetically as an effect of body size, with juveniles eating smaller prey than adults. -

Methods We assembled a database containing 551 lizard species, their phyloge- netic relationships and multiple life history and ecological variables from the lit- erature. We use phylogenetically informed statistical models to estimate the factors related to lizard productivity. Results Some, but not all, predictions of metabolic and life-history theories are supported. When analysed separately, clutch size, relative clutch mass and brood frequency are poorly correlated with body mass, but their product – productivity – is well correlated with mass. The allometry of productivity scales similarly to metabolic rate, suggesting that a constant fraction of assimilated energy is allocated to production irrespective of body size. -
Intestinal Coccidia (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) of Brazilian Lizards

Eimeria carmelinoi n.sp., from Kentropyx calcarata and Acroeimeria paraensis n.sp. from Cnemidophorus lemniscatus lemniscatus (Lacertilia: Teiidae) Ralph Lainson Departamento de Parasitologia, Instituto Evandro Chagas, Avenida Almirante Barroso 492, 66090-000 Belém, PA, Brasil Eimeria carmelinoi n.sp., is described in the teiid lizard Kentropyx calcarata Spix, 1825 from north Brazil. Oocysts subspherical to spherical, averaging 21.25 x 20.15 µm. Oocyst wall smooth, colourless and devoid of striae or micropyle. No polar body or conspicuous oocystic residuum, but frequently a small number of fine granules in Brownian movement. Sporocysts, averaging 10.1 x 9 µm, are without a Stieda body. Endogenous stages character- istic of the genus: intra-cytoplasmic, within the epithelial cells of the ileum and above the host cell nucleus. A re- description is given of a parasite previously described as Eimeria cnemidophori, in the teiid lizard Cnemidophorus lemniscatus lemniscatus. A study of the endogenous stages in the ileum necessitates renaming this coccidian as Acroeimeria cnemidophori (Carini, 1941) nov.comb., and suggests that Acroeimeria pintoi Lainson & Paperna, 1999 in the teiid Ameiva ameiva is a synonym of A. cnemidophori. A further intestinal coccidian, Acroeimeria paraensis n.sp. is described in C. l. lemniscatus, frequently as a mixed infection with A. cnemidophori. Mature oocysts, averag- ing 24.4 x 21.8 µm, have a single-layered, smooth, colourless wall with no micropyle or striae. No polar body, but the frequent presence of a small number of fine granules exhibiting Brownian movements. -
On Gymnodactylus Amarali Barbour, 1925, with the Description of a New Species (Sauria, Gekkonidae)

ABSTRACT Gymnodactylus amarali Barbour, 1925, was previously considered to be a subspecies of G. geckoides, with a wide distribution in the Brasilian cerrados. Examination of a specimen from Alto Parnaíba, Maranhão, near the type locality (Engenheiro Dodt, Piauí), indicates that it is a proper species, apparently limited to the upper Parnaíba basin. The form previously identified as G. geckoides amarali is described as a new species, G. carvalhoi, type locality Ipueiras, State of Tocantins, thus diagnosed: color pattern plain or, more often, with moderately contrasted ocelli; dorsal tubercles in 13 – 16 poorly organized longitudinal rows (mode 14, 72%); 31 – 49 tubercles in a paramedian row; 17 – 22 transverse rows of ventral scales; 13 – 18 infradigital lamellae on toe IV; tail longest in the genus. The new species is statistically compared to parapatric G. geckoides, widespread in the caatingas. Although only one meristic character (number of tubercle rows) is by itself diagnostic, the species are easily told apart. It is thought on provisional evidence that they are better considered for the time being as full species, not subspecies. A brief consideration is made of the speciation model that seems suitable, to wit, parapatric. -

Database on bifurcation, duplication and multiplication of tails in natural populations of reptiles. We considered only data that were provided at least at the genus level and that explicitly originated from natural populations or for which this was likely, as either the authors indicated for other specimens that they were captive animals, or because museum series were examined (even if data were provided only for the specimens with accessory tails). We relaxed these criteria for pre-1900 publications and included also individuals without determination and data that were not explicitly stated as applying to wild individuals if such an origin was plausible. We extracted the following data (if available): species name, number of individuals with accessory tails, number of individuals with bifurcation, duplication, trifurcation, quadruplication, quintuplication and hexaplication, sample size, geographic origin (usually country but may also be oceanic islands), microhabitat, and the year of publication. Nomenclature follows Cogger (2014) for Australian reptiles and Uetz et al. (2019) for other species regarding generic names, name changes due to priorities and synonymies, and for subspecies identified in the source reference that have been elevated later to full species rank. Name changes due to splitting of taxa into several species were made only if allocation of the data to the new species was obvious from morphological or geographic information provided by the assessed source reference or was already done by other authors. -
